Voices of Wrestling Podcast Network - Wrestling Omakase #126: NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 14 w/ Chris, Tyler, Paul & Gerard
play

01/05/20 • 165 min

Wrestling Omakase kicks off 2020 with full coverage of both nights of NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 14! To celebrate this historic two-night event we went live on Youtube with instant reaction streams right after both nights went off the air, so this week's episode is a combination of both those streams. For the first night John is joined by VOW contributors Chris Samsa (@TheChrisSamsa), Tyler Forness (@CCSTheRealForno) and Paul Volsch (@Darth_Dragon) and for the second night John is joined by Chris and Tyler again as well as Gerard Di Trolio (@GerardDiTrolio). Hear their thoughts immediately after each night went off the air, as well as some interactions with fans listening live and more. What were their favorite matches of a stacked weekend? How did John react to finally seeing Tetsuya Naito's big moment after all these years? And much more! Relive the journey of the two nights as we react in real time to each one!

Please note that since this was recorded in an unusual way compared to every other Omakase episode that the audio is a little different; John did their best to fix it in post-production but they still sound a little lower than everyone else and the two parts sound a little different as well. We appreciate your patience and understanding, and think you'll still find this to be a really fun episode. We'll be back to our normal recording method next week.

Voices of Wrestling Podcast Network - Wrestling Omakase #125: NJPW Year in Review 2019 w/ Joel & Damon & Joe Lanza
play

12/28/19 • 188 min

This week Wrestling Omakase's third annual Year in Review series reaches its conclusion! Each week we recapped the 2019 of a specific promotion, promotions, or type of wrestling, covering all their major shows and moments and giving our picks for the major award categories. It's a great way for you to catch up with wrestling you may have missed this year and identify matches you may want to watch or rewatch before doing your end of the year awards voting!

We've reached the end of another Year in Review journey, and once again we've left one of the biggest promotions for last: New Japan Pro Wrestling. Hear to help John break down NJPW's very eventful 2019 is a real all star team of VOW podcasters: from the flagship (@voiceswrestling) it's Joe Lanza, and from our NJPW-centric podcast the Super J-Cast (@thesuperjcast) it's Joel Abraham (@joeljabraham) and Damon McDonald! John, Joe, Joel and Damon begin the episode by touching upon the recent video dropped by Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks on their acrimonious departure from NJPW before transitioning into the more macro topics of how the Elite's departure affected New Japan, whether they liked 2019 or 2018 better, and how most of NJPW's best stuff this year all came in the major tournaments.

Then they begin a thorough month-by-month recap of NJPW's 2019, starting right from the top at Wrestle Kingdom 13 and going all the way through Road to the Tokyo Dome. What parts of the year stood out more than others for the crew? What matches may have you forgotten that are worth a second look? We discuss the rise of Jay White as a top heel, the simultaneous pushes to the forefront of Will Ospreay and Shingo Takagi, Tetsuya Naito & Kota Ibushi vs. The Safety Nerds, Taichi proving the haters and the losers wrong, and much much more! Finally we wrap things up with a quick edition of our NJPW 2019 awards. It's a packed three hours plus of talk on NJPW's year, this week!

This week on Wrestling Omakase it's more New Japan action as we continue tracking their hot March. John is joined by first time guest Lorien (@divingmeteora (https://twitter.com/divingmeteora) ) as we break down the NJPW Anniversary Event from Ota City Gymnasium and the first three nights of the New Japan Cup. It all starts with the Anniversary Show, as we discuss two big junior title matches, everybody pointing at themselves, and a main event we both found a little underwhelming. Then it's on to the first three nights of the New Japan Cup featuring 12 out of the 16 1st Round matches! Night 1 from Korakuen we discuss our Dad Feelings for Nakanishi, the International Cabal of Taichi Pretenders, Chase dunking on the host of this podcast personally and an awesome old guy battle in the main. Night 2 we're much more down on as 3 of the 4 matches were really quite dire, so we discuss some stuff we really didn't enjoy. But then it ends back on a positive night for Night 3 again with a lot of awesome stuff, including Taguchi's big upset of Tenzan (and his near-war crime ankle locks), Tanahashi taking Umino to school, EVIL and ZSJ being kind of perfect opponents for each other, and finally an amazing blowaway MOTYC between Naito and Ibushi. We wrap things up with some mailbag questions including who Naito's best opponent is and whether or not Umino's dad calling his biggest match ever was a conflict of interest. A fun time breaking down some NJPW, both the hot and the not so hot!
