Veil + Armour: Holiness in Motherhood and Daily Life

Sheila Nonato

From former feminist to exploring the Catholic feminine genius:

Learning how to be a "Proverbs 31 Woman" in the Modern World

Authentic conversations about faith, family and femininity.
Are you seeking a joyful, life-changing + Christ-centred vision of motherhood & femininity? Are you seeking authenticity, clarity, and confidence in your vocation as a Christian wife and mother, and seek to understand your husband's role and mission in the family, in his work, and in the world, and your divine calling as parents?

Sheila Nonato is a stay-at-home and homeschooling mom, and an award-winning journalist. Her work has been published by The Catholic Register (Toronto), Postmedia News - Ottawa (National Post), The Jordan Times (Amman), IRIN Middle East (UN news agency), The Canadian Press, The Globe and Mail, China Daily, The Christian Science Monitor
We will explore the Catholic Feminine Genius of women. Is popular culture the only lens within which we can view a woman's worth and purpose? The Catholic vision of motherhood and womanhood presents the "feminine genius," embodying the Christian virtues of service, sacrifice, and lasting joy and fulfillment in our God-given vocation as women, mothers, future mothers and spiritual mothers. We seek to bridge the gap between the understanding of women in the secular world vs. a countercultural Christian vision of a woman's role & power, rooted in the Bible and Church tradition.

As the May flowers bloom, it signals the time for honouring Our Blessed Mother in this month of May. It is also the time when we honour our mothers for Mother's Day, celebrated during the same month. In this week's episode, our Veil and Armour podcast welcomes Cassandre Verhelst, the Hozana App's Development Manager of the English Edition.
Cassandre speaks with Sheila from Paris, France. She introduces us to the newly released and transformative Rosario App by Hozana, a remarkable prayer platform designed to unite believers in prayer . The new Rosario App is challenging believers from around the world to pray a million decades of the Rosary. If this challenge is met, these prayer roses will be turned into a gift of a million roses at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico. Cassandre's passion for this project shines as she recounts how the app not only unites users in spiritual solidarity, but also keeps track of our collective progress toward the lofty goal of a million Rosary decades. Hear how this digital sanctuary is redefining the way we offer our devotions and celebrate the maternal embodiment of faith.
This week's episode weave personal tales with the rich tapestry of history, showcasing the enduring strength and grace of women through the lens of Our Lady. We uncover the profound symbolism nestled within the Rosary and the veil, touching upon the notion of Our Blessed Mother as the new Ark of the Covenant. Sheila also recounts the miraculous power of prayer she witnessed as a young girl during the Philippines' peaceful People Power revolution. Through these personal stories, we pay homage to the maternal figures in our lives, drawing inspiration from Our Lady's unwavering "Yes" to God and her steadfast courage at the Crucifixion. Join us for an episode that honours the spiritual journey of womanhood, and explores the depths of faith and devotion through heartfelt discussion and historical insights.

In Episode 6 of the Veil + Armour podcast, Sheila shares some insights she had gained from attending a recent silent retreat for women. She debunks her top three excuses for the necessity of an annual retreat: no time, no money, no need for it.
Sheila also shares a talk by her friend, Ina, during the retreat. A mother of six, Ina shared her reflection on Jesus' Parable of Salt and Light, and how we are being called to share the salt of our example, to share the flavour of the Gospel, through our words and in the example of our daily life. This doesn't mean, however, that we are perfect all the time. Ina shares that our imperfections can also draw people to our witness, to make us more relatable. Ina encouraged the women at the retreat to deepen their relationship with God, by knowing Him through Scripture, by reaching out to Our Blessed Mother through praying the Holy Rosary, and to seeking the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
Sheila also discusses the link between a spiritual retreat and a spring cleaning of our souls. The season of spring is a season of renewal, just like a retreat can be a time of prayer, reflection and contemplation, which can lead to a renewal of faith, a rejuvenation of our soul, and a new perspective on our life's purpose.
There is also a discussion on cherry blossoms, which are in peak season in early Spring and a brief look at a book about faith and conversion in Japan through the experience of Opus Dei. Finally, Sheila links the theme of the book, "Holiness for Housewives and Other Working Women" to the theme of retreats, her friend, Ina's talk, cherry blossom season, and the book, "When the Cherry Trees Blossomed: The Expansion of Opus Dei in Japan." The overall theme has been an invitation and a call to develop a closer relationship with God, and to take steps towards experiencing a springtime of faith and spiritual renewal.

In honour of the month of the Most Holy Rosary, and the Feast Day of Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7, we present a series of episodes dedicated to Our Blessed Mother and the Holy Rosary.
The first in our special series is the powerful vocation story of Father Peter Turrone, the pastor of Holy Rosary Parish in the Archdiocese of Toronto.
Father Turrone is a former missionary with the Consolata MIssionaries in Mongolia. He was the pastor at the Newman Centre Student Catholic Chaplaincy at the University of Toronto for five years. He holds a Masters Degree and a Ph.D. in Medical Science and Neuroscience from the University of Toronto.
A former atheist, he shares his story of conversion after reading St. Augustine's "Confessions." Father Turrone also shares his experience as the Catechist for popular Canadian podcaster and cancer survivor, Mrs. Tammy Peterson.
Father Peter Turrone’s incredible journey from atheism to faith is a testament to the profound ways in which science and spirituality can intersect. With a rich background in neuroscience, Fr. Peter shares how his analytical mind found harmony with his spiritual calling, all sparked by a vivid dream of the Virgin Mary and his future mission work in Mongolia's Gobi Desert. As we unravel his story, we explore how personal tragedies can rock the foundation of our beliefs, yet also become the catalyst for rediscovering the grace and hope that faith offers. Through deep reflections and the transformative power of the Holy Spirit, Fater Turrone reveals the intricate balance between the hard questions of faith and the beauty of embracing divine mysteries.
Listeners will gain insight into the communal nature of faith, learning how relationships and mentorship can light the path towards a fulfilling spiritual life. From the stirring words of St. Augustine to the moving symbolism of the Easter vigil, Fr. Peter illustrates how ancient texts and traditions remain relevant in today's world. Through personal anecdotes and stories of others on their spiritual path, like Tammy's preparation to become a Catholic, the episode underscores the harmony between faith and reason. Witness how living in accordance with Christian values can be a beacon of hope in times of existential crisis, helping younger generations navigate the tumultuous waters of modern life.

To Jesus, through Mary: The Friendship Forged in Faith of Tammy Peterson and Queenie Yu

God speaks to us in many ways. From the gorgeous morning sunrise, to the joyful laughter of children, or a hospital visit from an unexpected guest.
God doesn't need any words to let us know of His presence.
We may not be aware of Him, but our Loving Father is communicating to us, reaching out to us, trying to get our attention, because He is calling us to Him.
Sometimes God's voice may be in different forms, and it may even come in the form of our daily crosses.
God waits for us to respond.
And in this powerful story, we hear of one such call and response.
***
When we ask God for miracles, God often sends people around us because we are invited to become instruments of God on this side of Heaven.
Five years ago, Tammy Peterson was given 10 months to live.
Doctors removed half of her left kidney and the cancer surgery was successful, despite the grim prognosis. And then a medical crisis that doctors couldn’t solve which landed her back to the hospital.
Queenie, an acquaintance at the time, came to visit her and brought her a Rosary.
Their friendship blossomed as they prayed the Rosary together at the hospital every morning for five weeks.
Defying all odds, Tammy Peterson survived and thrived in her faith and in her new life mission of seeking and speaking the truth in her podcast.
It was a full circle moment as Mrs. Peterson entered the Catholic Church this past Easter at Holy Rosary Parish in Toronto.
Queenie, a convert herself who introduced Tammy to the faith and to the Rosary accompanied her as her confirmation sponsor.
This story is about the apostolate of friendship, and how newly confirmed Catholic Tammy Mary Peterson was brought to Jesus through Mary.
Join us for Part Two when we look at the Cross and the meaning of sacrifice, and how Tammy's role in the recently launched "We Who Wrestle with God" book tour of her husband, Dr. Jordan B. Peterson, was inspired by the search for truth and the perseverance of faith.
Thank you for joining us. God bless!

Join us for a special Father's Day episode of the Veil and Armour podcast as we celebrate fatherhood with my husband, Joseph.
In this episode, my husband discusses the vocation of fatherhood, rooted in faith, devotion, and mutual respect within the family. He shares about the role of fathers as knights, protectors and providers for the family. By drawing inspiration from Saint Joseph, fathers can navigate the challenges of modern fatherhood and create harmonious, joyful homes for their families.
Joseph elaborates on the role of fathers as silent leaders who guide their families with unwavering faith and strength, emphasizing the critical balance between leadership and silent strength that fathers must strike.
Discover the intricacies of a father's role in creating a harmonious and cheerful home, working tirelessly alongside the mother to ensure the well-being of the family. Joseph delves into the sacrifices fathers make, often giving their best to their loved ones, and modelling the example of Jesus through servant leadership. The conversation touches upon the essential need for fathers to maintain a strong prayer life, rest and rejuvenation, emphasizing how these practices sustain their efforts and add to their quality of life. Fathers are called to mirror St. Joseph’s dedication, creating a home where Christ and the Holy Spirit reside.
During his reflection on fatherhood, Joseph talks about the role of fathers as modern-day knights seeking to serve and protect their families. This episode also highlights fathers' pivotal roles in nurturing their children's dreams and shaping their futures through visionary leadership and unwavering support. My husband also shares a story of how his father, Rod, guided him through challenging times by steering him towards clear goals and strategic plans. Tune in for a profound understanding of fatherhood rooted in faith, devotion, and mutual respect within the family. Praying for all fathers (earthly and spiritual fathers) on Father's Day!
