Vaccine 4 1 1 - Daily News on the Covid-19 and Coronavirus Vaccines

This is Vaccine 411, the latest coronavirus vaccine information for June 28th, 2021.

The delta variant continues to turn back the clock. Moscow had a record 144 deaths in 24 hours yesterday. Germany declared Portugal a “virus-variant zone”, banning most arrivals from that country and is trying to ban British travelers from all EU countries regardless of vaccination status. Greece warned strict local lockdowns may be needed over the summer in some areas. Indonesia recorded a new high in daily cases, with similar spikes in Thailand and Malaysia. Sydney, Australia began a two-week lockdown. New Zealand suspended its quarantine-free travel corridor with Australia. Israel has reimposed mask requirements in enclosed public places. And in Africa, where vaccinations have been minimal, cases have jumped 25% over the last week.

How can the U.S. get its vaccination numbers up now that they’ve stalled out? The White House thinks it’s something called the “movable middle.” That’s people who are unvaccinated, but still might be able to be convinced. And they’re using political campaign tactics to identify, reach, and win over those people.

What the White House won’t do is promise we’ll ever know for sure the real origin of the pandemic that’s killed at least 3.9 million people. They say their review may not produce a definitive explanation. Although knowing the origin is critical to avoiding or preparing for future such catastrophes, governments, the media, and science organizations could leave us with no answers at all.

Far more states have banned proof-of-vaccination policies than have created programs for people to digitally show their vaccination status. Hawaii is the only state enforcing some version of a vaccine passport. And only California, New York, and Louisiana have offered residents a way to voluntarily show proof of vaccination.

Nothing’s ever good enough. NASA reports the COVID-19 pandemic and its lockdowns got rid of a lot of pollution around the world...but not all of it. They cite tiny airborne particles called PM2.5 as something that didn’t change much. These are produced by both human activity and natural processes and are associated with several effects on health.

In the United States cases were down 18%, deaths are down 15%, and hospitalizations are down 15% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending flat since June 18.

There are now 4,947,918 active cases in the United States.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Dimmit, TX. Reeves, TX. Campbell, VA. Clay, NC. Franklin, TX. Panola, TX. Upshur, TX. Joplin, MO. Dallas, MO. And Taney, MO.

There have been 603,966 deaths in U.S. recorded as Covid-related.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: California 31. New York 14. Pennsylvania 11. Texas 9. Utah 8. Virginia 5. Minnesota 4. New Jersey and Maryland 3. And Iowa 2.

The vaccinating states update will be coming tomorrow, those numbers are not updated over the weekend.

The top 5 countries for vaccinations per capita are Gibraltar, the United Arab Emirates, Malta, Seychelles, and the Cayman Islands. The bottom five are Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burkina Faso, Benin, and South Sudan.

Globally, cases were down 6% and deaths down 28% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending down since June 26.

There are now 11,547,517 active cases around the world.

The five countries with the most new cases: India 46,643. Brazil 33,704. Colombia 32,376. Indonesia 21,342. And Russia 20,538.

There have now been 3,922,005 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide.

Coronavirus vaccine news, updates and information for 6-25-2021

This is Vaccine 411, the latest coronavirus vaccine information for June 25th, 2021.

We’re starting to see things move backwards. The coronavirus czar in Israel announced the indoor mask mandate will be reimposed early next week to stem the rise in cases. Yesterday was the highest daily tally in months. The country has one of the highest inoculation rates in the world, but it’s still far from the 80% figure needed to mark herd immunity.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Europe is “on thin ice” in its battle against COVID-19. EU leaders agreed vaccinations should be sped up to fight the delta variant. The European CDC projected the variant would account for 90% of all infections across the continent by the end of August.

As if the delta variant isn’t disturbing enough, a new mutation of that variant has emerged in India that’s being labeled “delta plus.” The variant has also been found in the U.K., the U.S., Canada, Japan, Nepal, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Switzerland, and Turkey. The delta plus variant has three worrying characteristics that include increased transmissibility, stronger binding to receptors of lung cells, and the potential reduction in monoclonal antibody response.

San Francisco has taken a firm stand on the vaccine. All city workers will be required to be vaccinated. This policy would affect 35,000 workers and may be the first of its kind by any city or county in the U.S. Employees who refuse could be fired.

There’s nothing like a crisis to bring out the scammers and criminals. Former PTL Club evangelist Jim Bakker and his southwestern Missouri church will pay $156,000 restitution to settle a lawsuit accusing him of falsely claiming a health supplement called the Silver Solution could cure COVID-19. Bakker admits no wrongdoing. The Silver Solution has no known benefit in the body when ingested and can have serious side effects including turning skin blue.

In the United States cases were down 19%, deaths are down 12%, and hospitalizations are down 20% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending flat since June 18.

There are now 4,974,397 active cases in the United States.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Hutchinson, TX. Upshur, TX. Clay, NC. Hockley, TX. Titus, TX. Reeves, TX. Houston, TX. Franklin, TX. Gray, TX. And Harrison, TX.

There have been 603,149 deaths in U.S. recorded as Covid-related.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: California 66. Texas 35. Michigan 31. Illinois 22. Georgia 17. North Carolina 15. Pennsylvania 13. Virginia and Nevada 10. And Washington and Louisiana 8.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s had at least one dose: Vermont unchanged at 73.3%, Massachusetts at 69.7%, and Hawaii at 69.2%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Mississippi unchanged at 35.7%, Louisiana at 37.6%, and Wyoming at 38.8%. The percentage of the U.S. that’s been fully vaccinated is 45.4%.

The top 5 countries for vaccinations per capita are Israel, the U.K., the United States, Canada, and Germany. The bottom five are Chad, Burkina Faso, Benin, and South Sudan.

Globally, cases were down 8% and deaths down 23% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending down since June 12.

There are now 11,431,693 active cases around the world.

The five countries with the most new cases: Brazil 72,705. India 51,248. Colombia 32,997. Argentina 24,463. And Indonesia 20,574.

There have now been 3,898,531 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide.

Coronavirus vaccine news, updates and information for 6-29-2021

This is Vaccine 411, the latest coronavirus vaccine information for June 29th, 2021.

The World Health Organization says get your masks back on. Even if you’re fully vaccinated, mask up and go back to social distancing. But CDC guidance is that “fully vaccinated people can resume activities without a mask or physically distancing.” Plus, experts say vaccines authorized in the U.S. remain largely effective against the Delta variant. So again, we have public health bureaucracies thoroughly confusing the public.

The world continues to believe travel causes COVID-19 outbreaks. Hong Kong is banning all passenger flights from the U.K., which they’ve classified as high risk because of Delta variant spread. And Portugal has also put the U.K. on its red list for travel, even though Portugal itself has been reporting the highest number of daily new cases since February.

In Germany, the share of COVID-19 cases caused by the Delta variant more than doubled within a week, accounting for 36% of infections. They expect it to become the dominant strain by summer. In Germany, about 35% of the population is fully vaccinated.

Experts in Australia describe their situation as the most dangerous stage of the pandemic since the earliest days. Sydney and Darwin are locked down. Perth made masks compulsory for three days and warned a lockdown could be coming. And Brisbane and Canberra have or will soon make masks compulsory.

Here’s a positive story. 45-year-old Mary McCarthy of New Zealand works in a hospital kitchen, so she was tested in October 2020. It was painful, and the discomfort lasted weeks. A few doctors told her she had a chronic sinus condition, which she believed because she’d always had pain in her nose and shortness of breath. But the pain was so bad one day she decided to go to one more emergency room where doctors found...a toy that had been stuck up her nose for 37 years. A tiddlywink to be exact.

In the United States cases were down 15%, deaths are down 16%, and hospitalizations are down 14% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending flat since June 18.

There are now 4,929,192 active cases in the United States.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Dimmit, TX. Reeves, TX. Campbell, VA. Franklin, TX. Dallas, MO. Upshur, TX. Panola, TX. Hopewell, VA. Taney, MO. And Joplin, MO.

There have been 604,114 deaths in U.S. recorded as Covid-related.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: Colorado 18. New York 16. Illinois 9. North Carolina and Washington 8. California 7. Mississippi 6. And Michigan, Virginia, Louisiana, and Minnesota 5.

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s had at least one dose: Vermont at 73.6%, Massachusetts at 70.1%, and Hawaii at 69.5%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Mississippi at 35.9%, Louisiana at 37.9%, and Wyoming at 39%. The percentage of the U.S. that’s been fully vaccinated is 46.1%.

The top 5 countries for vaccinations per capita are Gibraltar, Malta, Seychelles, Cayman Islands, and San Marino. The bottom five are Lesotho, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Syria, and Liberia.

Globally, cases were down 3% and deaths down 28% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending down since June 26.

There are now 11,499,287 active cases around the world.

The five countries with the most new cases: India 37,037. Colombia 28,478. Brazil 27,804. The U.K. 22,868. And Russia 21,650.

There have now been 3,928,409 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide.
