How North Korea has become a powerhouse in women's football
Upfront - A Women's Football Podcast
10/03/24 • 19 min
North Korea won the Under 20 Women’s World Cup for a third time last month, meaning they are now one of the most successful sides in the tournament’s history. So how has such a politically isolated country forged such a strong presence on the global stage?
We’re joined by Tokyo-based sports journalist Alex Bishop, who talks us through that winning moment in Bogotá, their rise as a women’s football power and why North Korea’s youth development is so strong.
Plus, Alex explains how their senior team has consistently maintained a top-ten FIFA ranking, and whether he can see them at the World Cup in Brazil in 2027. Join us!

Where were ya Chelsea and we shine a light on endometriosis
Upfront - A Women's Football Podcast
01/17/23 • 51 min
Chloe, Rachel and Crystal Palace’s Leigh Nicol react to the return of the WSL! Leicester come back with a bang, but it took Chelsea 89 minutes to realise it was happening to be honest...
In the second half of the show, Leigh talks us through her ongoing experience of endometriosis, which Leah Williamson recently revealed almost prevented her from playing at the Euros. For Leigh, it’s not only jeopardising her playing career, it’s hampering her day-to-day life. We discuss the difficulties of diagnosis, the lack of awareness around the condition, and how it’s silently but profoundly damaging the lives of elite footballers.
You can find more information on endometriosis at Endometriosis UK.

Upfront x The National Lottery: A Good Causes Special & Supporting Grassroots Football
Upfront - A Women's Football Podcast
07/04/22 • 36 min
Today's episode of Upfront is brought to you in partnership with the National Lottery. The National Lottery Players have supported women's football to the tune of £50 million in the last 10 years, and we wanted to speak to those at the heart of the grassroots game about how this funding benefits clubs all over the UK.
Chloe is joined by Marty Trifonova and Linda Fox, a first-team player and Chairperson from Actonians LFC. Marty tells us how she emigrated to the UK and fell in love with the game at Actonians, while Linda explains just how impactful National Lottery funding has been in helping them progress their footballing operation. We also hear about the spirit of a club that prides itself on bringing people together from all backgrounds through their love of the game - and how Marty managed to embarrass herself in front of England legend, Ellen White!
We'll be back with our first show of the Euros tomorrow! In the meantime, tweet us @FootballRamble, @FloydTweet, @GirlsontheBall and @Morgie_89

Man United punish Spurs and Miedema leaves Arsenal?!
Upfront - A Women's Football Podcast
05/14/24 • 52 min
The sun was out, the good times were flowing, Chloe and Rachel were back together at Box Park... the weekend felt like Euro 2022 all over again! And then - for Spurs - reality struck.
Clo and Rach react to a huge victory for Manchester United to lift their first major trophy. Could this change the trajectory of their summer transfer window? And how do Spurs – especially Becky Spencer – come back from such a drubbing?
There’s also the small matter of Viv’s departure from Arsenal (?!!). Rach explains why things have never been better since Joe Montemurro’s days at the club and Chloe road tests some new strike partnership names at Man City. Bunny...Mied? MiedHemp? We’ll keep working on it. Plus, a preview of the FINAL weekend of the WSL!

Champions League disappointments & where’s it going wrong for Spurs?
Upfront - A Women's Football Podcast
04/22/25 • 52 min
Clo and Rach are back in the studio after a frustrating weekend of Champions League football for both Arsenal and Chelsea.
Can either of them turn it around in the second legs? Clo reckons it’s close to impossible for Chelsea, but Rach has cooked up a strategy that might just work. Let’s just say the word “Tetris” springs to mind...
Elsewhere, all this European drama has distracted us from a spicy WSL weekend, which saw Tottenham come so close to picking up their first league win since January. Why are they having such a weird season after showing such promise last year? And is Robert Vilahamn really in trouble? Clo and Rach get stuck into just that.

On The Continent: With the Super League defeated, what next for European football?
Upfront - A Women's Football Podcast
04/22/21 • 50 min
Dotun, Andy and Miguel Delaney look back on a truly seismic week, as the formation and startling failure of the European Super League represented the most significant story in the history of European football.
With the project shelved (for now), we highlight the pivotal moments in the fight between the deluded, monied elite and everyone else. We also wonder what's next for Bayern Munich – whose manager Hansi Flick will be leaving at the end of the season – and we hear from Lars Sivertsen, Nicky Bandini and David Cartlidge about the reaction to the Super League across Europe.

Upfront - A Women's Football Podcast
02/10/22 • 51 min
Dotun, Andy and Lars Sivertsen search far and wide for reasons why Borussia Dortmund are struggling - turns out they just need some defenders.
We also look ahead to a battle of the Haves and the Have Mores in the Champions League next week and despair at the alarming state of women's football in France after Ada Hegerberg's recent comments.
