Holy cow what a season! I cannot believe we are about to wrap our 41st show of our 4th season!
I am so grateful for our inspiring guests that took the time to sit down with me to help share their passions, missions, and light to all of our audience through out the world. Thank you to our New Orleans community that helps our positive foot print grow outside of our city and spread into places that need the light that only New Orleans understands.
Thank you to our amazing producer and editor that creates a magical show every single Friday. Adrian from Solid Ice Media is amazing and he is local. He is the mastermind and it wouldn't be possible without his talents. Thanks big guy.
And of course, thank you to every single sponsor that NolaPapa.com has, allowing our campfire to brighten- creating embers from it to soar into the air and brightening someone's life somewhere out there.
On this season 4 finale, we welcome New York Times Best Selling Author, John Garrison. His brand new book, Red + Hot and Blue was released recently and he sat down with myself and local book enthusiast and author, TQ Sims.
"Red Hot + Blue is a meditation on music's capacity to find us, transform us, and help us make sense of our historical moment. Blending memoir and cultural history, Garrison recalls his coming out at the height of the AIDS crisis alongside the music industry's first major response to the epidemic. In 1990, a groundbreaking effort by musical artists sought to combat the silence and stigma about the disease. The resulting tribute album to legendary composer Cole Porter was evocatively titled Red Hot + Blue, capturing both the joy and melancholy that accompany love during turbulent times. It re-imagined those iconic songs - including “Don't Fence Me In,” “Every Time We Say Goodbye,” “Night and Day” - not just to celebrate the composer but also to offer a shared vision for survival. In this book, Garrison reflects on his own life story through the lens of Porter's life and music to illuminate the emotional landscape we all navigate in the search for love.
Red Hot + Blue returns us to the early 1990s to reveal how the love songs of the past can be revived to speak to new audiences in times of need. The book is the portrait of an album, a pandemic, and a young gay man's coming of age in the era of both." Courtesy of www.bloomssbury.com

Then we welcome upcoming new Author, TQ Sims. His new book, "God Speed Lovers" was released last month and is adding to a new genre that brings SYFY and gay romance together in a unique and romantic time, allowing our community to connect with a different type of story.
"Lovable loner Casey Isaac thinks love isn’t for him. Not since extraordinary events left him with supernormal powers and a great deal of trauma. But when Oscar Kenzari looks at him, he can’t help but change his mind. As Divinators, Casey and Oscar have used their psychic powers to defend humanity from sentient, extradimensional storms for one hundred years. But a storm more powerful than any before i

Y’all I am just beside myself! We are embarking on our 4th season of this experiment- this love letter to New Orleans, that keeps being written. I set out looking for people, artists and creators that inspire not only me, be so many others every single day.
Anyone that knows anything about New Orleans knows that right now is a unique and special time of the year where the locals and tourists alike revel in the streets for Mardi Gras! Starting January 6 each year on King's Day and party all the way up to Fat Tuesday on Mardi Gras day!
One of my personal favorite parades to go to is a "Super Krewe" and rolls on Lundi Gras, the Monday night before Fat Tuesday!
Founded 31 years ago by giant celebrity Harry Connick Jr, he wanted to create a Mardi Gras krewe that was made up of artists of all types. He wanted to make sure that his krewe would accept people of all creeds. Over the 3 decades that Orpheus has rolled, each year it has gotten a little bigger and prettier with all of the beautiful floats that make it one of the most sought after experiences of the whole Carnival Season!
Renee Maxwell, Orpheus' entertainment director sat down with me recently to dish out some of the new details for the krewe this year!
For example , Neil Patrick Harris and his HUSBAND David Burtka are the celebrity monarchs this year. Yall, did you hear what I just said?
A GAY COUPLE will grace the celebrity monarch float just like ANY OTHER over the years! This is the most inclusive work I have ever seen during recent years for Mardi Gras!
Find out more details like Taylor Dayne performing at their Ball after the parade!
Join us Lundi Gras- Feb 12 for the thirty first year of the Krewe of Orpheus!
Find out everything at www.kreweoforpheus.com
And then we welcome one of the Iconic beings in the Universe that is about to take to the streets TOMORROW NIGHT in the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacca!
The Pink Wookie is synonymous with this walking krewe of space and fantasy revelry.
Gary Griggs, the human being inside of the pink wookie sat down with me to talk about just HOW he was able to create such a memorable and vibrant character!
The Krewe of Chewbacca may not be a "super krewe" but they are definitely a GIANT walking krewe with thousands of the most creative people in New Orleans!
Join us tomorrow night! Saturday, Jan. 20 at 6:00 in the Marginy!

When it comes to our kid's dental hygiene habits your Papa is always on the forefront. Getting them to do anything takes an act of congress but hygiene needs to be taught in a fun and repetitive way. From tooth brush songs to children story books, I am here for it! Simply because it teaches our littles to take pride in what they have RIGHT NOW.
Adam Dennis is a local New Orleans Children’s book author that wrote about what would happen when the beloved Gary the gator from Uptown Pediatrics was visited by the tooth fairy. The unlikely events helped Gary take pride in his own smile which helps our own kids understand the importance of keeping their own grill shiny!
Find his book all over! Click here to order it now!

Then later we welcome back one of our NolaPapa NOW writers, Becky Balfe.
An inspirational writer finding her own strength through her own words and by doing so, helping others to understand the complexities of creating a family and the difficulty understanding our bodies when they don't perform the way we need them to.
Be sure to read her column in our Digital Magazine!

Unscripted: A Nolapapa Podcast - Spirit Guides with Cari Roy + Early Arrivals with NICU Nurse Nikki Rockwood
play

Send us a text

I got CHILL BUMPS this week y'all! First we're checking back in with the one and only Cari Roy, New Orleans' famed psychic medium, about the guardian angels that stay all around us. Cari tells us how we're beloved by those in other realms, whether we know it or not, and we have spirit guides that can follow us across lifetimes. She gives so many people such peace, Cari even teaches us how to let those angels in to our lives by using meditation to open the door.
Then, it's our new segment "Early Arrivals," where we honor the brave humans that help premature babies and their families (like mine!) manage the first days of a brand new life. We welcome back our friend, Oschner Children's Hospital NICU nurse Nikki Rockwood, to discuss the experience of having a baby in the neonatal intensive care unit, how she helps new parents through the early stages of their baby's fragile life, and how she fell in love with the important work she does at Oschner.

Last year we welcomed Country music star Ty Herndon to be our special guest for our Christmas Eve show. He is an absolute light. His enlightening words are as rich as his soulful voice.
Ty tells us about his experience being raised in the church in Mississippi and following his dreams of being a country singer, years before he came out in 2014. We talk about how he dealt with telling his fans he was gay while he was on stage, how his mama helped him find the strength to live his authentic life.
We also get to hear and discuss some of Ty's new music. He even opens up about the angels that inspired him to save his own life, and how he wrote his latest album. Then, we break out the tears and reminisce about our vey own late gay idol Leslie Jordan, who was a good friend to Ty for many years. This episode is packed full of inspiration y'all, so enjoy and Merry Christmas one and all!

Erik is a New Orleanian and dad of two who runs his blog about being gay and raising a family in the south. He loves to smile, wave at strangers and winks at old ladies. He’s got the world on a string and he likes to slide down rainbows. Wanna come?

Unscripted: A Nolapapa Podcast - Getting Spooky with a New Orleans Ghost Hunter & Learning the Louisiana Lore
play

04/19/24 • 101 min

Send us a text

I have ALWAYS loved to watch those ghost shows on the television . Man oh Man. Talk about something that fascinates me. It's the unknown. The mysteriousness. The fright! Yall know from time to time, Papa goes after some of these investigators. I want to learn! After all, what is the the harm of a little haunted fun?
Well, that being said, I found the MOST POPULAR ghost hunter in New Orleans. With almost 150,000 followers on Instagram, John Gualtieri is easily the bravest man in the room. Remember that eerie Christmas tree that was high up in the abandoned Charity Hospital? That's HIM! No, it wasn't Casper trying to get festive. It was John doing what he does. He explores the COOLEST and scariest abandoned places all around New Orleans and Louisiana.
My hope is he allows us to tag along one day and record a show LIVE. Here's hoping!
Yall have got to check out his stuff on Instagram. Follow him at
@new_orleans_ghost_hunter and you will see what I am saying!
Then later I sat down with a new documentary film maker that just released his first of many documentaries about the eerie legends of Louisiana. Chris Mathieu's doc is called
"The Forbidden Documentary: Occult Louisiana" and it explores everything from haunted history to Pirates Alley with Jean Lafitte. Yall know HE REALLY walked those streets in the Quarter. Chris even explored the swamps of the Bayou in search of the real life Rougaroux. And THAT PARTICULAR story is absolutely WILD.
It is over an hour of real life stories that have left so many, including me is left scratching their head.
You can watch his new Documentary on Apple or Tubi:
