Artificial Intelligence in Politics

Artificial intelligence. The emergence of the technology which allows machines to perform tasks that usually require human intelligence.
What could go wrong?
Many of us were twigged to the notion of artificial intelligence with the investigation into Cambridge Analytica and it’s impact on the election. While artificial intelligence will soon give us self driving vehicles, there is a growing skepticism of applying it in the political realm or public policy making. Politicians consistently rank near the bottom of the list when it comes to being respected. What if A.I could improve on that?

COVID-19: Rapid Testing

The need for rapid Covid testing is crucial to flattening this curve. When will they be available?
Ottawa and Toronto are coping with more lockdowns, and several areas in Quebec are in the same situation. The federal government has announced the purchase of almost 8 million rapid tests. It was aiming to conduct 200 thousand a day across the country, but currently we’re seeing about 70 thousand completed. The question for many is ‘why is it taking so long?’ for Health Canada to give approval.
What exactly is available now? What’s coming down the pipe? Will Canada have the lab capacity to meet the demand?

Answers are few and far between for school boards getting ready to welcome students back in September. The Ontario Government has said it would announce more details this week to give boards the time to implement their plan. 72 of Ontario’s school boards are preparing plans for three possible scenarios — a full-time return to in-person learning, virtual classes for all, or a hybrid model that combines the two.
This will not be any routine return in September as distancing, hand washing, sanitzer will all be part of the “new” normal. Working in their favour is the fact that children have been less infected by the virus compared to other age groups. Many paediatric experts feel that it is crucial for young people to get back to school but doing it safely.

COVID-19: Whistleblowers in Long-Term Care

PUBLISHED: 23/10/2020
Fear is coursing through long-term care homes in Canada as the country slips into the second wave of the pandemic. Will it be as fatal as the first wave?
During the first wave of Covid about 8 in 10 deaths from the virus were in long-term care. In late spring, the federal government called in the military to help with homes dealing with outbreaks and staff shortages. For many PSW’s and staff, they are the lowest paid yet face the most danger.
On top of that, there is little to no whistleblower protection for those workers so they can continue to work in unsafe conditions or take a chance on speaking up, and being fired. Earlier this year, the provinces were presented with recommendation. Now, soon to be debated at Queen’s Park, new legislation which would protect people and organizations from “making an honest effort” from legal action.

Canada-China Relations: Navigating Trade and Diplomacy

Just when you think relations couldn’t get any worse between Canada and China...they do.
Last week, China ramped up the pressure on Canada by sentencing two Canadians to the death penalty. The bizarre part was they had already been convicted and sentenced to incarceration. Then it all changed. This relationship has been skidding into the ditch since Huawei Executive Meng Wangzhou was arrested in B.C. to be extradited to the U.S. Shortly after that, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor were arrested on the accusation of espionage although nothing has been proven. Over 500 days in captivity and counting.
What is it going to take to thaw relations between the two countries or does Canada pivot away from dealing with China? Canada had been looking to China for increased trade. Whether that will happen is still in limbo.

Canadians feel China has not come clean on the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic and the picture is quite clear if a new Angus Reid Institute survey points out.
In the span of just six months, the views of Canadians about China have plummeted. The latest numbers from Angus Reid Institute find a mere 14 percent of us have a favourable opinion of that nation. That’s down from the 29 percent just before the outbreak. It appeared the Prime Minister was hesitant to point fingers or lay blame when these views started arising. But in recent days, he is sounding more like he would pursue more evidence.

Grim numbers from Canada’s Chief Medical Officer of Health. Over half of the COVID-19 deaths in Canada have been in long-term care and senior homes.
The pain is palpable for this with family and friends in long-term care. The fatalities keep mounting of seniors suffering from COVID-19, putting in the spotlight several care institutions across Canada. The mounting numbers have Ontario focused on facilities like Almonte County Haven, West of Ottawa, or Pinecrest nursing home in Bobcaygeon, west of Peterborough. Rules have been amended provincially to help those who work, and live in these facilities.
Today on the Unpublished.Cafe, we talk about what’s needed to take better care of our seniors during this pandemic. Do you feel the working conditions need to be improved for those working in long-term care homes?

Hindsight is 20/20. But foresight?
The pandemic threw the economy in a blender with the lockdown. Despite provinces emerging and advancing in opening up in stages, crowds and close contact are verboten. Needless to say the impact on tourism is near devastation. But out of that, the world renowned Shaw Theatre in Niagara on the Lake, was able to keep 500 workers paid, actors, musicians and crew.
A bit of shrewd business thinking and a bit of luck means more than 500 people who would have been out of work are not and collecting their paycheque. This has to be one of the most unique stories to come out of the pandemic.

With the US, Europe and other countries ordering millions of doses of potential COVID vaccines, many are wondering if there will be any left for Canada.
The federal government announced this week, that it had signed two deals to secure several million doses from Pfizer Canada and Moderna. But what had many scratching their heads was what took Canada so long? Any potential vaccine for Covid will still have to be approved by Health Canada. Canada has loaded up on equipment such as needles alcohol swabs, but they’re of no use without a proven vaccine.

Since when did the truth become a problem for people? It seems the “truth” is up for sale in some circles.
With a US election less than a month away and a Canadian federal election on the horizon next year, misinformation and disinformation is rampant. The FBI has shut down Tenet Media in Tennessee, which was run by two Canadians, because it was discovered that the Russian owned RT (Russian Today) channel was funnelling money to Tenet to amplify it’s pro-Trump stance.
That’s called “propaganda “. It has massive implications for our democracy.
Our Unpublished.vote question asks:
Should attempts by foreign agents to sway voters in an election, be considered an attack on a Nation?
