S1 E5: KANYE WEST - MY BEAUTIFUL DARK TWISTED FANTASY
08/29/23 • 57 min
Few artists can boast the way that Kanye West can, that is both a fact and a play on words. With the kind of impact he has had in the worlds of fashion, rap, and hip hop it's easy to see why he would boast. However, everything Kanye had built up to that point almost came tumbling down following the controversy with Taylor Swift in September of 2009 at the MTV VMA's. If there was ever the perfect time for him to crawl into a secluded space and fade away into the world of used-to-be-great hip hop artists that would have been it. But instead, he draws back into the studio with the biggest team of collaborators he could find to conduct a symphony of creativity and emerges with his greatest work of art up to that moment. Perhaps, that is the greatest lesson we could ever take from this record. Your greatest works of art happen when you surround your self with the greatest artists.

S1 E4: ANTHONY OLIVER MUSIC - RICH MEN NORTH OF RICHMOND
Country musician Anthony Oliver (you know, the guy with the red beard) has recently taken youtube and social media outlets by storm with the song Rich Men North of Richmond . But why, or how? He's not part of a well oiled media campaign. He's not signed to a major record label. He's not donning the latest fashions. He's not surrounded by the "who's who" of the music industry. He's just a guy with a guitar singing from the heart. With his lyrics Oliver has pierced the soul of working Americans facing every array of hardships and hopelessness, many of whom feel let down or even abandoned by the people in government.
To be honest: I don't normally listen to country music, but what is called country music today is hardly country at all. Its more like big city ideas with a pickup truck, a cowboy hat, and fake country twang. Anthony Oliver Music is real country. Even I can tip my hat to that.
RICH MEN NORTH OF RICHMOND
Well, I’ve been selling my soul
Working all day
Overtime hours
For bullshit pay
So I can sit out here and waste my life away
Drag back home
And drown my troubles away
It’s a damn shame
What the world’s gotten to
For people like me and people like you
Wish I could just wake up and it not be true
But it is
Oh, it is
Livin’ in the new world
With an old soul
These rich men north of Richmond
Lord knows they all just wanna have total control
They wanna know what you think
They wanna know what you do
And they don’t think you know but I know that you do
‘Cause your dollar ain’t shit and it’s taxed to no end
‘Cause of rich men north of Richmond
I wish politicians
Would look out for miners
And not just minors on an island somewhere
Lord, we got folks in the street
Ain’t got nothing to eat
And the obese milking welfare
God, if you’re five foot three
And you’re three hundred pounds
Taxes ought not to pay
For your bags of fudge rounds
Young men are putting themselves
Six feet in the ground
‘Cause all this country does
Is keep on kicking them down
Psalm 121 NLT
I look up to the mountains—
does my help come from there?
My help comes from the LORD
who made heaven and earth!
He will not let you stumble;
the one who watches over you will not slumber
Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps.
The LORD Himself watches over you!
the LORD stands beside you as your protective shade.
The sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.
The LORD keeps you from all harm
and watches over your life.
The LORD keeps watcher you as you come and go,
both now and forever.

S1 E6: PEARL JAM - TEN
It's 1991. The pop musical landscape is ever changing and at the forefront of this change comes a band from Seattle via a short San Diego flight, Pearl Jam. The only question I had in the fall of 1991 concerning this album was, "Do I purchase this new digital aged compact disc, or do I stick with the trusty cassette tape." Those were simpler times, true, but to be fair I was only in middle school so this was a big decision. Of course, I went with the CD. I couldn't be left behind while desktop computers where taking over every household in America. Ten would go on to sell over 13 million albums, producing singles like Even Flow and Jeremy. Another great song that took over the airwaves in the years to come was Alive. It became less and less just a song and more and more an anthem for a generation grasping for hope.
