Hello Deacons! Unfolded has returned, and we’re back with a remarkable short story by Lutheran Minister and writer Jake Bouma.
The Mute Monk is a captivating parable that will have you contemplating themes of grace, forgiveness, memory, and fate long after you’ve finished listening.
Jake is an ecclesial junkie, aspiring polymath, and cancer survivor who currently serves as Director of Youth & Family Ministry at Faith Lutheran Church in Des Moines, Iowa. In 2012, Jake was diagnosed with and treated for Hodgkin lymphoma, a journey which is intimately captured in a forthcoming feature-length documentary titled “Let’s Do This: Facing Hodgkin Lymphoma.” During treatment, Jake solicited contributions from distinguished Christian thinkers like Brian McLaren, Carol Howard Merritt, Kester Brewin, and more for a series on his blog titled “Cancer & Theology,” which will is available on Amazon and features exclusive new essays. Information about the documentary and the “Cancer & Theology” project can be found by visiting Jake’s website at http://jakebouma.com.
Jake is also co-founder of Elbow Co., a venture that offers “ministry resources by and for church nerds,” including a youth and young adult biblical purity curriculum and an every-other-weekly email with recommended reading on religion, culture, and ministry. Elbow Co. is on the web at http://elbowco.organd Twitter at @ElbowCo.
Finally: If you enjoyed this story, consider purchasing the Kindle e-book version for just $0.99.

If you liked the lyrical essay featured on episode 11 of Unfolded, then you’re going to love this interview with author and poet Sarah Wells!
I (Jesse) skyped with Sarah recently and we had a great time chatting about why she writes poetry, where she finds inspiration and what she does when she gets discouraged. We hope you enjoy the talk.

We are tremendously honored to be featuring a piece of poetry by the amazingly talented poet, Sarah Wells, on this episode. And wow, is it a good one! Sarah’s writing is simply brilliant.
In this episode, Sarah offers a beautiful and stirring reflection on life as a woman, mother and wife, and explores the dipolar themes of giving and taking, chaos and order, love and contempt, power and weakness.

Welcome to a special bonus episode of Unfolded. Matt and I (Jesse) decided that it would be cool to give folks a peek under the hood, so to speak. We’ll be interviewing our guest contributors in an effort to explore art and creativity in-depth, and hopefully capture a glimpse of their creative process.
This inaugural episode features poet Dave Harity, who wrote and narrated Through the Motions, which was featured on episode 9 of Unfolded. Sit back and enjoy the chat as we talk about how Dave feels about the creative process, getting paid for art and particular superpowers that might interest him.
Dave Harrity is an author and teacher from Louisville Kentucky, where he lives with his wife and kids. He is the author of Making Manifest: On Faith, Creativity and the Kingdom at Hand, which is available at seedbed.com. He is also the founder of Antler, a community building organization that exists to help people engage creativity as a devotional practice for spiritual formation. You can connect with Dave on twitter @daveharrity.

This weeks episode, The Invisible One, was inspired by John 4:7-9, and examines the life of Malcom, an ordinary hospital chaplain. We hope you enjoy it.
