Underneath it All
07/02/20 • 3 min
We often talk about these wild outdoor adventures we embark on, highlighting the highs, even the lows, but we forget to discuss how we got there in the first place.
Underneath it All, hosted by Grizel, dives deep into the stories of everyday people who have or are currently experiencing mental health difficulties and how the outdoors has influenced them. Because sometimes, what drove us to climb the highest peaks was experiencing the lowest valleys of our lives.
Through these stories, we hope you can have a better understanding of others around you, learn to accept and fully embrace your own narrative, and to continue breaking the negative stigma that has engulfed mental health.

Seeking Balace in the Backcountry
Underneath it All
07/26/21 • 42 min
- Season 3, Episode 1 - Seeking Balance in the Backcountry
In the first episode of this season, Grizel reflects on previous backcountry experiences as she prepares to backpack/bikepack the CDT and introduces us to Alex, her friend and trail support for this summer’s adventure.
This season of Underneath It All will be recorded while on trail, following the journey in real time. Grizel will be sharing her holistic approach to this outdoor adventure and hopes that these conversations will help others to talk about mental health and break the negative stigma that surrounds the topic.
Self reflection questions for this episode:
What makes you feel so like yourself the most? Does that involve others? Does that mean being by yourself?
What keeps you from pursuing hobbies? What keeps you from experiencing happiness?
Are you living a lifestyle you want? If you change one thing about your life, what would it be?
What societal roles are you fulfilling that you don’t want to fill anymore?
What societal rules did you grow up believing?
What keeps you from sharing your mental health with others? What parts of yourself are difficult to change? What parts of yourself are easy to victimize and not move on from?
What is the goal for outdoor adventures and when can it be changed from getting to that peak, to checking in and listening to your body, mind and emotional needs?
Who is one person you trust to talk about REAL life with? Why do you trust them?

A word about this season’s sponsor: Salomon is an outdoor brand who actively works towards their sustainability goals. The climate crisis becomes more severe by the day, and until more brands and distributors take a stronger initiative to reduce their carbon footprint with consumers, partnerships, and global strategies, the crisis will only get worse. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the climate crisis and not know where to begin as far as action steps, but similar to making changes in our own personal lives, Salomon is mindful of the small steps necessary in order to achieve bigger impacts. They are also responsible for the amazing shoes Grizel mentions in the episode!

Nicole Antoinette (she/her) is obsessed with honest conversations. A writer, retreat facilitator, and host of the Real Talk Radio podcast, Nicole works to create resources and gatherings for people who crave deep, genuine connections—both with themselves and others. Offline, Nicole is an indoor kid turned long-distance hiker, and when she's not on trail you can find her living in a tiny white van named Trixie.
In Episode 3, Nicole and Grizel talk about dealing with anxiety in a capitalistic nation, living to the expectations of others instead of ourselves, and how to be kind to ourselves and others when life doesn't go the way we expect it to. They also talk about the journey of long distance hiking, and the parallels to the deeper parts of life. At the end of the episode, there is a guided meditation focused on the discovery of compassion towards self.

Season 3, Episode 3 - Managing Mental Health with the Climate Crisis
The climate crisis becomes more apparent each day, and while on the CDT, Grizel faced many of its effects. From rising temperatures, to endless wildfire smoke, it’s hard to not feel its effects on our mental health as well. In this episode, Grizel talks with her good friend Ben Bishop, who is an agroforestry researcher at the University of Missouri studying agroforestry systems and tree crops. Through his research, he hopes to expand the utilization of trees and woody shrubs as both profitable crops and as a strategy to off-set greenhouse gas emissions. They discuss ways to stay hopeful, how to navigate the connection between mental health and the climate crisis, and about the different ways we can all make a change.
