Tying It Together with Tim Boyum - A Tiny N.C. Mountain Town is Addressing Its Big Confederate Past

A Tiny N.C. Mountain Town is Addressing Its Big Confederate Past

03/03/21 • 25 min

Tying It Together with Tim Boyum

In 2020, big cities across the state and country saw most of the attention during protests over racial justice issues and Confederate statues. However, some small towns, like Sylva, North Carolina, started facing their own past-related struggles.

On this week’s episode of Tying It Together With Tim Boyum, Tim travels to the tiny mountain town located about 50 miles west of Asheville to learn more about its unique story.

The town has played a backdrop for movies like Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and The Fugitive, but also has a fascinating script of its own. It involves a former pro-wrestler, a town board looking to make a change, and a community with a changing identity.

It’s also a story that, so far, has yet to write its ending.

A Year of COVID: How the Pandemic Shaped North Carolina

A year after the COVID-19 pandemic gripped the state, we look back at the strides and struggles faced along the way and ahead to the days when this will all be part of the past.

As coronavirus cases quickly spread and Gov. Roy Cooper placed North Carolina in shutdown mode, everyone, including this podcast, had to promptly shift gears and adapt to a rapidly changing environment.

On this week’s episode of Tying It Together With Tim Boyum, Tim catches up with three people featured on past episodes throughout the pandemic. Restaurant owner Leonardo Williams, Rabbi Eric Solomon, and COVID victim and “long hauler” Angie Daoud join us to talk about how they are doing today, what they have learned, and what they hope for in the next year.
