Two Kids and A Career - 111: A Community Designed To Help The Sandwich Generation
play

06/08/22 • 47 min

Over the past five years, Mike and Kim Barnes found themselves navigating problems they never saw coming from their parents: Alzheimer's, pacemakers, COVID pneumonia, and the tough decision to move parents into retirement communities. They've learned to balance the many facets of parenting aging parents, including medical, financial, everyday-life decisions, emotional rollercoasters, protecting their parents from scams, and more, all while parenting their college-age kids, and building their careers.

Mike & Kim each spent 30 years on TV. Kim's TV career includes 15 years as an award-winning reporter and news anchor and Mike's includes 29 years as an award-winning sportscaster.

They've realized that so many adult children go through the same trials with their parents, yet hardly anyone talks about it. Most struggle in silence. That's why they created a community to provide information, resources, and support. In this week’s episode with Jill Devine, Mike and Kim discussed the Parenting Aging Parents community and provided some conversation starters to help with difficult topics that need to be discussed with aging parents.

Two Kids and A Career - 113: It Is Absolutely Ok To Say No With Zero Guilt
play

07/06/22 • 46 min

Jill Devine received an email from Christi Flynn, a Life Coach out of Edmonds, Washington. Christi was introduced to Jill through the Messy Mommies, Meg Tortorello and Holly Murer.

Christi heard Episode 58: Being A Messy Mommy Brings Togetherness and decided to email Jill:

As a working mother with two young children, I struggled mightily to balance my family and my work. Often, I would wake up short of breath, already anxious about the coming day. I was constantly multi-tasking and not doing a good job at anything. I wanted to be the supportive and loving partner to my husband who was building his own business. I wanted to be the creative and loving mother. I wanted to be the super-star professional. I just couldn’t do it. I was miserable.

I wish I had a life coach at that point. Someone to guide me and help me to tap into my gifts, my goals, my dreams. Years have passed now and through professional help, personal self-development, and a loving supportive husband I now live a different life. Yes, life can be very difficult, however now I know myself and I have tools that I use to cope. I know my own superpowers and I use them every day in my own life. I earned my coaching certification through Seattle Life Coach Training.

When I’m not coaching, I can be found swimming with friends in the pool or the Salish Sea, tending my garden, or traveling. I am a wife, mother of two young adults, and a sister, among many other roles in my life. I’ve been married to my college sweetheart Todd for close to 30 years. We live in Edmonds, Washington.

Take a listen to this week’s episode to hear some helpful tips on how to say no with zero guilt and check out Christi’s website for her latest blog post, “Learning to Say No”.

Empowering and connecting women are the goals of this week’s guest. Jamie Kocher stumbled across Jill Devine’s podcast through Episode 59: The Overwhelming Support From Other Mamas and Small Business Owners with Kaci Bruek. Jamie is friends with Kaci and once Jaime heard Episode 59, she started following and supporting Jill on social media.

Jamie is a Doctor of Physical Therapy specializing in pelvic health and pregnancy/postpartum fitness. She has two girls (almost 9 and 6 years old), plus 3 angel babies. Jamie’s brand, Moms Made Strong, exists to give women safe and effective workouts during and after pregnancy, but also leave them feeling confident, strong, and empowered.

Jill would like to acknowledge and recognize the hard work moms put in on the daily. It can be a thankless job at times, and Jill wants these moms to know their worth, so she created the Supermom Shoutout. This week’s Supermom Shoutout goes to Addie of St. Charles, Missouri. In last week’s episode, Nan nominated Steph of St. Charles. Steph’s daughter, Addie, chimed in and agreed with the nomination, which led to Nan also nominating Addie. Here’s what Nan said in her nomination:

Addie is an amazing momma too! She has two kiddos and she is one of the most creative people I know. She is so talented! You should see the work she has done on rehabbing her home.

Addie - YOU are seen and YOU are supported!

To nominate a Supermom (or you can nominate yourself) email [email protected]. Submit the name of the Supermom, where they're from, and a brief description as to why Jill should shout out this particular Supermom.

Even though stay at home orders have been lifted and cities are opening up again, it will take time for small businesses to recover from the lost revenue due to the pandemic.

Jill Devine wanted to get an expert on to discuss the new tax guidelines, available loans, and other relief efforts available to business owners. Nicole Thousand is a CPA and the Founding Partner of Thousand CPA Services. Nicole tries to make accounting and number talk as easy as possible because she knows it can be confusing. Side note – she’s fun, fashionable, and likes to drink wine, which may not sound like your typical CPA.

Nicole and Jill talked about how busy CPA’s are during tax season and then you add COVID-19 on top of it, it made for a very interesting time. Nicole felt her team transitioned with ease to accommodate all that was happening in the world because Thousand CPA Services was designed with a working mom in mind. In the public accounting world, a work life balance is very difficult, so Nicole wanted to make sure her employees, who the majority were moms, could work remotely from home to help with the unusual hours, especially during tax season. When presented with quarantine and stay at home orders, Thousand CPA Services were able to meet the needs of their clients with minimal disruption.

Nicole discussed some of the items business owners should consider due to the pandemic. They include:

  • The tax deadline was extended to July 15. 1st and 2nd quarter estimates are also due on July 15th.
  • There are still relief options available for business owners. If a small business has not applied for a PPP (Paycheck Protection Program) loan, it is possible to still apply.
  • Communication, communication, and more communication. Every business owner should be working closely with their CPA. A cash flow conversation with your CPA is essential right now. Whether you have a PPP loan or not, you need to know what funds you have right now and what you think you will have in six months or even a year from now and how you will recover.
  • Monthly accounting isn’t rocket science and most business owners can do the work, but it takes a lot of time to crunch all of the numbers and input the data. The time of a business owner is valuable, and the time used on monthly accounting could be applied towards marketing the business instead. Nicole said you should outsource as much as you can.

If you’re looking for help or advice, call Thousand CPA Services (636.532.9004) or check out their website.

Two Kids and A Career - 112: Understanding Your Birth Plan Options
play

06/22/22 • 42 min

Why do women who’ve experienced a traumatic childbirth feel the need to share that experience, unsolicited, to a pregnant woman? That’s the last thing an expecting mama needs or wants to hear! Sometimes it’s hard to put up boundaries when you’re expecting, but this week’s guest had a few suggestions. Kerry Tuschhoff also discussed with Jill Devine the different birth plans available to expecting mamas, including hypnosis.

Kerry is the Founder/Director of Hypnobabies®. Hypnobabies is a very successful 6 week, 3-hours per week, complete childbirth education course that was adapted with permission from Master Hypnotherapist Gerald Kein’s “Painless Childbirth Program” techniques (medical grade, somnambulistic hypnosis). This allows Hypnobabies students to enjoy “eyes-open childbirth hypnosis”, easily remaining deeply in hypnosis while walking, talking and changing positions; being as mobile as they would like to be during childbirth. Hypnobabies is well-known for helping people create much shorter, easier and more comfortable labors, making childbirth the joyful experience it was meant to be.

Jill Devine has always been the perfect patient at the eye doctor, until now. She has joined the “readers” club, but this episode isn’t about Jill’s lack of being a gold-star student anymore. In all seriousness, there is a major problem with children from low-income families not being able to thrive because of vision ailments.

Executive Director at Eye Thrive, Kate McKearn holds a Master's Degree in Teaching and has more than 12 years of experience leading inner-city classrooms in Chicago, Decatur (Illinois), and Saint Louis. Recognized for her ability to empower her students with the skills and confidence they need to succeed, Kate has transferred that expertise to her leadership role at Eye Thrive and established an organizational culture that prioritizes impact over outputs, meeting our kids where they are, and providing the highest quality of care.

Eye Thrive (formerly Eye Care Charity of Mid-America) is a St. Louis-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to ensure no child in our community fails to thrive simply because his or her family cannot afford glasses. Eye Thrive does this by providing free vision screenings, eye exams and prescription glasses to low-income children at their schools and community centers on-board a Mobile Vision Clinic. Since 2013, the organization has conducted more than 20,000 free comprehensive eye exams and dispensed more than 21,000 free pairs of glasses.

In the face of a pandemic that has destabilized family finances overnight and altered the landscape of need, our kids need us now more than ever. As the only independent non-profit vision provider in the region, despite COVID-19 Eye Thrive has remained open, expanded our programs to serve more kids, and adjusted our delivery model and protocols to prioritize the health and safety of our kids and our staff. Your support will help Eye Thrive continue to provide essential vision services, including eye exams and glasses, to at-risk kids right here in Saint Louis.

Kate and Jill discussed the challenges visually impaired children face every day without a proper visual diagnosis.

I have a Supermom Shoutout for ya. My cousin Greg's wife, Chelsea is an exceptional young lady. For starters, she is a nurse at Mercy and has been working nights during the pandemic while pregnant (due in March). She is also the mom to Gus (2) and a dog mom to their bulldog Brock. With everything she has going on in her professional and personal life, I don't see how she does it and with such a positive attitude. She always puts everyone's needs ab

Two Kids and A Career - 63: Living Life With Two Sets Of Twins Under The Age Of Five
play

02/17/21 • 42 min

Does the thought of traveling with 4 kids, all under the age of five years old, terrify you? It terrifies Jill Devine. She was supposed to take her girls to see her best friend who lives about 6 hours away, but the trip didn’t happen due to COVID. Jill was sweating leading up to the trip wondering how she was going to travel solo with a 4 and 2-year-old. Marissa and Adam Goldstein aren’t terrified. In fact, they embrace it.

Marissa and Adam have two sets of twins under the age of 5: Raya, Efi, Noa, and Eyva. Marissa and Adam love traveling, and they weren’t going to let having children stop them from doing what they loved. So, they made a pledge to keep traveling no matter what! In fact, their oldest twins visited 15 countries before they were potty trained. Their entire family are lovers of travel, food, and community service. The Goldstein’s goal is to help other families find inspiration in their everyday life, whether they’re looking for advice on what to do next or trying to find the will to just get out and go! Their website, Twinsonthegox2, contains helpful tips and tricks when it comes to traveling with kids, among other great parenting content.

The Goldstein family split their time living in both Vietnam and Boston. While exploring remote villages in Southeast Asia with their family, they grew a bond with local families and fell in love with the beautiful art forms they have passed down amongst generations. Marissa and Adam wanted to share these traditional handicrafts with a larger audience, give back to the communities they came to love, and build a strong community their selves. So, they launched Rafi Nova! The company originally launched as a travel accessory brand, but as many companies that launched in 2020, pivots had to be made because of COVID-19. They were able to quickly come up with a plan and design for face masks and they continue to improve that design to meet the needs of all individuals, while also donating masks to frontline workers.

Marissa joined Jill on the podcast to talk about parenting and traveling with two sets of twins, living in two different countries, the development and launch of their business, and how they are navigating the pandemic.
