Episode 3: What Hiring Managers Are Looking For

Summary:

Hey there, and welcome to another episode of Career Coaching with Tiffani, The Office Informant! In this episode, we explore skills that hiring managers are looking for when filling a job opening. We'll discuss the traits employers value the most and how you, as a job seeker, can demonstrate your hard and soft skills during the hiring process.

Highlights:

One thing that hiring managers are looking for when they review your assets (resume, portfolio, profiles, and cover letters) are the hard skills necessary to do the job.

  • The interview is one of the most important places you should tailor your responses to highlight your hard skills. Keep the job description in mind. When you get those "tell me about a time when" questions, you should share examples aligned with the challenges they are looking to solve with this position.
  • A second place hiring managers are looking for you to highlight during the application process is your problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
  • In addition to your resume, your interview should highlight problems you have solved.
  • LinkedIn is another place where you can showcase your ability to solve problems. There is a section on your profile where you can collect recommendations. This is where you can ask past and current colleagues to write recommendations about a particular project you worked on together and ask them to describe the challenges you overcame.
  • A third area hiring managers are looking for experience is professionalism. A place that you may not consider necessary when thinking about your professional image is your OTHER social media profiles outside of LinkedIn.
  • Additionally, your other career assets should be professional down to the details of being error-free.
  • Finally, interviewing with an employer is an excellent opportunity to showcase your professionalism, from your ability to utilize technology to your preparation to answer questions. The interview can make or break an employer's impression of you.
  • The last area I want to highlight in this episode is cultural fit.
  • You might use past work or life experiences that grew you or challenged you throughout your interview or cover letter to connect deeper with the hiring manager.
