Tudors Dynasty - Hands-On History: Tudor Manor House
play

03/09/22 • 18 min

Heather Darsie is joined by Brigitte Webster, Experimental Food Historian, to discuss what it's like to run (and own) a Tudor manor home. Brigitte and her husband also run The Tudor and 17th Century Experience: The Tudor and 17th Century Experience is the brainchild of Brigitte Webster. Born in Austria, Brigitte trained, and served as a school teacher for 25 years. Her qualification was in history and cooking, a combination that has finally come together in her career as a culinary historian currently working on a number of publications on international cuisine of the 16th Century. The Tudor and 17th Century Experience is a venture that finally allows her to share her passion for all things Tudor with a wider audience especially now that she and her husband have at last moved into their dream home, an authentic Tudor manor. She is supported in her venture by her husband, Tom who is a long standing history re-enactor, military adviser and owner of an historic firearms company. Tudors Dynasty - Kateryn Parr with Dr. Linda Porter
play

02/28/22 • 50 min

As a queen consort of England, Kateryn Parr's history is often overshadowed by the events that allegedly occurred between her husband and Lady Elizabeth. The Victorian historians didn't help her reputation either. Agnes Strickland's Lives of the Queens of England depicts Parr as having an 'unrivaled skill as a nurse'.

Today I am joined by Dr. Linda Porter to get a feel for the real Kateryn Parr. Dr. Porter responds to many of the myths about Parr, as well as interesting stories about her life.

Tudors Dynasty - King Edward II of England with Kathryn Warner
play

03/03/22 • 60 min

Edward II is one the most talked about kings of England, but not for his bravery or his great accomplishments. Instead we have been told for centuries that it was a 'red-hot poker' that was his end.

Historian Kathryn Warner joins us today to debunk the myths and to answer listener submitted questions.

Also, by pure coincidence, our guest today also mentions Agnes Strickland's incorrect history on Edward II as well.

Tudors Dynasty - Historian Dr. Estelle Paranque on Queen Elizabeth I
play

04/17/20 • 61 min

*Warning: This episode contains some explicit language, nothing serious, but don't listen with little ears around. Dr Estelle Paranque is Lecturer in Early Modern History at New College of the Humanities at Northeastern, and an Honorary Research Fellow within the Centre for the Study of the Renaissance at the University of Warwick. She is the author of Elizabeth I of England Through Valois Eyes: Power, Representation, and Diplomacy in the Reign of the Queen, 1558-1588 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018) and has published several essays on Elizabeth I, French monarchs, and other European queens. I had the privilege to speak with historian Dr Estelle Paranque on the subject, by the way, her favorite subject, and we discussed everything from her relationship with Robert Dudley, her similarities to Anne Boleyn, and yes, I found a way to discuss Thomas Seymour - because, let’s be honest, you can’t talk about Elizabeth’s early years without discussing Thomas.
