Truth's Table - BlackGirlMagic: Christina Faith
play

08/27/22 • 57 min

It wouldn’t be a Truth’s Table season without a BlackGirlMagic Interview! We are honored to have Christina Faith at the table as our August Black Girl Magic guest. Pull up a chair and have a seat at the table with us! Learn more about Christina Faith: Christina was born in Atlantic City, NJ and creatively made in Philadelphia, PA, Christina Faith is a director, writer and producer with a passion for bold, original storytelling in all genres. After securing her Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and African American Studies from Rutgers University, Faith furthered her education by pursuing a Masters of Divinity from Eastern University. Prepared to use her degrees to help better the world around us with a career in social work, Faith’s undeniable love for storytelling and cinema led her to change paths to filmmaking. Decision made, Faith committed completely to learning how to tell stories with power and purpose in all forms of visual media. She likes to say (partially in jest): “As a filmmaker, I’m 100% self-taught. I got my MFA from YouTube and Google University.” Having earned her skillset through relentless curiosity and hard work, Faith entered the professional marketplace by forming Creative Thought Media, a full-service production company and artist collective that focuses on creating original content and educational mentorship. Through this company, Faith has produced, written, and directed feature films, serialized digital programming, commercials, music videos, and shorts. Faith remains highly dedicated to empowering others, giving back and cultivating the next generation, which has led her to take a role as a Professor of Film at Esperanza College. Over the past decade, Faith’s creative projects have included directing, writing and producing the original scripted digital series SINGLE AND ANXIOUS (22 episodes), short films (CARLOS, PLAN B, and The REUNION), and documentaries (16 for 16: The Contenders). Faith takes great pride in realizing work that often brings voice to the types of characters that have long been marginalized or overlooked by today’s culture. 2021 proved to be a breakout year for Faith as she released two well received feature-length films, LOVE YOU RIGHT: AN R&B MUSICAL and WHO IS CHRISTMAS EVE? Truth's Table - Behind The Book: I Am Restored by Lecrae
play

08/15/20 • 52 min

In this episode, Ekemini and Christina are at the table with Lecrae to talk about his new book, I Am Restored: How I Lost My Religion But Found My Faith. Lecrae is a Two-time GRAMMY winning hip-hop artist and bestselling author. Lecrae has inspired millions with his redemptive and gut-honest art. But when his personal life spun into chaos, he was forced to face the buried impact of the unhealed wounds--sexual abuse, physical trauma, addiction, and depression--that threatened to tear it all apart. Along the way, he realized the wounds we all carry have the potential to be unlikely guides to healing and freedom for ourselves, and others. With vulnerable honesty and transformational yet simple steps you can apply today, Lecrae shares the personal practices he uses in his daily life for mental, emotional, and spiritual health. With powerful prose, he gives an unflinching look at the personal and public spaces that sadly hurt us so often--culture, politics, family, church, personal failure--and reminds us that learning to let go and forgive is the birthplace for the life of creativity and freedom God has for us. I Am Restored is an inspiring charge to embrace the lasting healing and restoration available now, and that we all desperately long for, because no matter what you've experienced, God is near, He hears, and He's not done with you yet. Ekemini and Christina asked him all the questions and Lecrae did not hold back. He laid it all on the table. Pull up a chair and have a seat at the table because the tea is hot! Truth's Table - Black Music Month: Xavier Omär
play

06/09/18 • 51 min

It’s June, which means that it’s Black Music Month! The women of Truth’s Table are kicking off their Black Music Month Series and Xavier Omär joined them at the table. How does Xavier Omär want to be remembered? As a risk taker, a classic voice, an artist who blurs musical lines and fearless dreamer. And, with these big goals, the fearless dreamer. And, with these big goals, the singer-songwriter isn't wasting any time. His debut studio album, Bonfire, released on 09/02/14, was followed by his EP with Sango (Soulection) titled Hours Spent Loving You, and singles Blind Man & Hesitate. Xavier Omär takes pride in his songwriting ability and is most excited by the reward of evoking specific feelings in his listeners with his music. He draws inspiration from artists of all genres, including James Blake, Arcade Fire, Kanye West, Mumford & Sons, John Legend, Frank Ocean, The Beatles, and Sam Smith. Xavier Omär grew up as a military brat, moving across the country and as far as japan, but he claims Georgia as his home. Music balanced out the highly structured lifestyle of his military family. His mother and siblings sang and played drums and piano, and his father was a writer, producer and the minister of music at church. He wrote and produced his first song at 12 years of age, recording it in his basement on a 4 track tape recorder. A brief period of discouragement was tackled when Xavier Omär decided to audition for American Idol Season 11 in Houston, TX. Not making it past the preliminary judging round gave him the determination to save up to buy equipment and begin recording music again. So, add "proving American Idol wrong" to his list of goals. In 2012, he hit the ground running with his solo career and hasn't stopped since. Pull up a chair and have a seat with us!
