Sovereign Citizen Gets Shut Down
On January 18, 2022, Las Cruces Police Officer Joshua Milks was working as the crisis intervention coordinator for the Las Cruces Police Department when he was dispatched to the city library at 200 East Picacho for a trespassing incident involving a sovereign citizen. Library manager Margaret Neill had called about a male, later identified as Steven Mackmiller, who was refusing to wear a face covering in the library. At the time, a governor’s order was in effect that required face coverings all businesses. New Mexico's mask mandate was lifted by the governor one month later, on February 17, 2022.
The following is from Officer Milks' report, lightly edited for clarity and brevity: when I arrived on scene, I could see Mackmiller, Neill and a security guard all standing by the library computers. Mackmiller stated that he just wanted to print out four pages of a document and complained that the staff was not allowing him to conduct his business. I explained to Mr. Mackmiller that he needed a face covering and he told me that he is an American “something” — that basically means he does not have to follow laws.
I dismissed his claim and felt that arguing the law with Mr. Mackmiller would be pointless. He was recording our interaction on a camera and seemed to have his 'sovereign speech' rehearsed, so I took a stern approach and asked Mackmiller to either put on a face covering or leave the library. He continuously refused to put on a face covering so I told him that he could either leave, or he would be arrested for trespassing. Mr. Mackmiller wanted a supervisor, but I wanted him out of the library. In case the confrontation turned physical, I wanted to be outside. Mr. Mackmiller stated that he felt “threatened." He then walked to the front door, and refused to continue. I identified Mackmiller and checked him for wants and warrants; I wanted to ensure I was completely done with him, before I made him leave the property.
During this process, Mackmiller requested a supervisor and I told him to go across the street. He refused, and wanted one on scene so I called Sergeant McCord over the radio to meet with us. I explained to Mackmiller that he would need to leave the property while waiting for a supervisor. I felt that Mackmiller was using the request for a supervisor to prolong his ability to be in the parking and to also test what kind of response he would get from me. Throughout the interaction, I felt that Mackmiller was testing me to see if he could bait me into a physical interaction with the intention of suing me, the city or the department. Each time I explained to Mackmiller that he would be arrested, he curbed his behavior. Mackmiller requested that I write a police report for this incident, so by policy I gave him a case number and documented this report.
I believe that Mackmiller got upset when he realized that I was not going to give him the response he wanted. Consequently, he walked off. Mackmiller told me that he would sue me and that I should wait to expect something in the mail. I waited as Mackmiller walked off before going inside to interview Ms. Neill. Neill said that MMackmiller refused to wear a face covering even after they offered him one, or several other suggestions on what he could wear as an approved covering.
In my conversation with Ms. Neill she also expressed the feeling that Mr. Mackmiller was just looking for a reaction that he could record and publish for whatever alternate motives he has.
I was out of trespass cards at the time, so I went back to the station to pick one up and give it to Ms. Neill. [End of report]

Mother accused of killing children in oven FULL 911 CALL - Lamora Williams Confession
The disturbing 911 call from a mother now accused of murdering her two small children was released by police on Wednesday.
Atlanta Police said Lamora Williams, 24, killed her two young children, Ja'Karter Penn, 1, and Ke-Yaunte Penn, 2, by placing them in an oven, but that’s not what she told dispatchers when she called 911.

“She just left my kids in the house when I came back from work, and my kids, two of my kids are dead. What do I... what do I... what do I got to do? They dead,” Williams told a dispatcher.
The call starts with Williams telling the dispatch she came home from work and discovered her two young sons dead. The call quickly turned graphic.

"When I came in, the stove was laying on my son, on my youngest son's head, and my other son was laid out on the floor with his brains laid out on the floor. I don't know what to do. I just came home from work," Williams was heard saying in the 911 call.
Williams first telling the dispatcher that her cousin was babysitting and left the children alone, but then in a bizarre twist, she asked the operator to assure her she will not be blamed for their deaths

"Can you please help me? Like. Can you please tell me, like, I don't want to get locked up because this is not my fault? I had just came [sic] home from work," Williams said.
But investigators said that is not what happened. The charges laid out in a warrant which stated the 24-year-old mother put Ja'Karter and Ke-Yaunte in the oven sometime between 11 p.m. Thursday and 1 a.m. Friday.

"Both of my children are dead. Their head is burnt. Their... Their skull is laying under the floor. The stove... One of my babies is stuck, the stove is pulled over and everything," Williams told dispatchers.
At the same time Williams was making her 911 call, the boy's father, Jameel Penn, was also calling 911 from his workplace. He told a dispatcher Williams had just video chatted with him, showing him the dead bodies of his sons.

Penn: "She video called me and showed me this and I seen [sic] it."
Dispatcher: "What's the address?"
Penn: "And I really think they are really dead."

Police Officer Arrested After Running Away From His Mother's Wedding
This is a bit of a weird one. On February 26, 2022, Orange County Sheriff's Office (OCSO) Deputy Sheriff Zachary Louis Erickson was arrested by officers with the West Melbourne Police Department after Erickson ran away from his own mother's wedding and was caught driving more than 80 mph in a 40 mph zone. Erickson was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, Erickson refused field sobriety tests and refused to submit to a breath alcohol test.
On May 25, 2022, Erickson was accepted into the Brevard County first-time DUI offender program. Erickson was required to complete 20 community service hours, DUI school, and a victim impact panel, to be followed by a related term of DUI probation. On August 3, 2022, Erickson pleaded guilty to the charge of Reckless Driving, Alcohol or Controlled Substance Related. Adjudication was withheld, fees and fines were imposed totaling $674.81, and Erickson was placed on nine months of probation with various requirements.
Erickson's brother Jared is a deputy with OCSO, and his father died in the line of duty as a deputy first class with OCSO (see note below). According to Erickson's words during this arrest, his mother previously worked for OCSO. After OCSO learned of Erickson's arrest, Erickson was relieved of his law enforcement duties. Information obtained by this channel indicates that Erickson is currently employed as a police officer with the Kissimmee Police Department. As of mid-June 2022, Erickson was on the Brady List maintained by the State Attorney's Office for the Ninth Judicial Circuit of Florida. Note: Erickson's father was Michael K. Erickson, who died on March 16, 2011.
A contemporaneous story published on Officer.com states: "Orange County Sheriff's Office officials said a deputy died while on the job at the YMCA Aquatic Center," however a WESH article published that same day reports that Erickson died of a heart attack while playing racquetball with one of his neighbors. It appears that Erickson's death may have determined to be in the line of duty because Erickson had attended three high-stress homicide calls the weekend prior to his death while playing racquetball. Whether of not an officer death occurred in the line of duty has implication for, among other things, the availability of certain financial benefits to next of kin.

The Sleep Walker Murderer | Randy Herman Jr Police Interrogation
Randy Herman was convicted of first-degree murder for the brutal stabbing death of his childhood friend, Brooke Preston, who he claimed he killed while sleepwalking.
It was a case with an unusual defense and one that ultimately the jury didn’t buy.
The defense team for Randy Herman Jr. tried to argue during his murder trial that he was sleepwalking when he brutally stabbed his roommate and childhood friend 21-year-old Brooke Preston to death inside their Florida home in 2017.
He had a long history of sleepwalking which dated back to childhood. Herman, who had a habit of self-medicating with alcohol and had previously been convicted of two DUIs, had been on a drinking binge in the days before the stabbing, the Miami New Times reported in 2019. He estimated that he drank around 30 beers during one of the last days he spent with Preston, who was gearing up to leave and move in with her boyfriend. That and his frequent lack of decent sleep were brought up as contributing factors that the defense said caused him to sleepwalk.
During his trial, Herman pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, with sleepwalking being the psychological affliction. His defense called Dr. Charles Patrick Ewing, a forensic psychologist, to the stand who testified that it usually takes some time to fall into a deep sleep, the kind of sleep that sleepwalking is believed to occur during. However, he also testified that it’s possible for someone to fall into a deep sleep immediately, especially when drinking and sleep deprivation are involved.
Herman had claimed that he had spoken to Preston just minutes before killing her. He testified that he remembers waking up in his bed to Preston coming into his room to talk about a shirt he was giving her. Just minutes later, he remembered stabbing Preston to death but believed he was dreaming, according to him. The new Hulu documentary “Dead Asleep” notes the theory that the memory of him being awake just minutes before the slaying could have been a dream or an imagined memory.
Still, it was that specific memory that jurors pointed to as the reason for why they ultimately convicted Herman in 2019.
“The way that the jurors explained it to me was when they put the timeline together they felt that he couldn’t have returned back to a deep sleep,” “Dead Asleep” director Skye Borgman said in an interview earlier this month. “Circumstances including prior behavior, alcohol use, his sleep patterns, I think he [Ewing] said it’s possible that he could have [been sleepwalking and in a deep sleep] but also possible that he could not have returned back to sleep.”
She said that ultimately jurors determined that the timeline the way that they saw it, if he didn’t imagine that interaction with Brooke, then he would not have been able to have returned to a deep sleep state.
The timeline was such a big motivating factor for them in seeing how this sequence of events played out,” she said. “They felt more convinced that he wasn’t sleepwalking at the time.”
Heman, now 28, was sentenced to life behind bars. Last month, Herman filed a motion to try to get his conviction vacated. He wants a new trial and argues that his defense was wrong to claim that sleepwalking was a mental illness, the Palm Beach Post reported.

STOLEN: A Year-long Investigation Into Child Sex Trafficking & Exploitation
STOLEN; an expansive documentary series about sex trafficking and the exploitation of children in San Diego County and beyond.
Told from multiple perspectives, STOLEN explains why the illicit child sex market thrives in San Diego County and across the U.S., while chronicling the strength of survivors, their families, and advocates working to break that destructive cycle and reclaim their stolen lives.
Understand the issue in a new way by hearing the jailhouse recordings of a convicted trafficker manipulating two teen girls into selling themselves online. The tapes led to an NBC7 investigation exposing gaps in the justice system that allow people who pay to sexually assault children to face little to no consequences.
The documentary is the product of a year-long investigation that includes exclusive interviews and, for the first time ever, substantial proof of the scope of the problem in San Diego County schools. And as a global pandemic shifts the education system into a virtual space, experts warn of exploiters targeting children online, now more than ever before.
