Hi there, and welcome to this week’s episode of Treat Your Business! I’m Katie, and today, we’re diving into one of the most universal but often unspoken challenges among high achievers—imposter syndrome. It’s that inner voice that makes us doubt our accomplishments, no matter how much we’ve achieved. If you’ve ever questioned your worth, felt like you don’t deserve success, or found yourself caught in cycles of perfectionism or self-doubt, this episode is for you.

Episode Summary:

In this episode, we explore the roots and realities of imposter syndrome—what it is, why it shows up, and how it holds us back from reaching our full potential in business and life. Katie shares her personal journey with imposter syndrome, recounting moments of self-doubt, overachievement, and the struggle to embrace success fully. She discusses the subconscious behaviours that lead to self-sabotage and shares insights from coaching hundreds of clinic owners who experience similar hurdles. Through stories and practical examples, Katie offers strategies to understand and tackle these inner challenges, encouraging listeners to recognise their own worth, celebrate their achievements, and avoid the perfectionism trap.

Katie also dives into the "7 out of 10" principle, a practical approach for combating procrastination by embracing “good enough” rather than perfection, and the importance of avoiding comparison. We explore specific ways to cultivate a mindset of abundance, embrace our achievements, and surround ourselves with supportive people, like coaches, who can help us overcome imposter syndrome’s effects on our confidence and business growth.

Key Takeaways:

  • Recognise Imposter Syndrome: Understand what it is and why many high achievers experience it.
  • Embrace Imperfection: Aim for a "7 out of 10" rather than perfection to keep moving forward.
  • Celebrate Success: Take time to acknowledge achievements rather than focusing solely on what’s left to do.
  • Avoid Comparison: Unfollow competitors and focus on your unique strengths and value.
  • Surround Yourself with Support: Seek mentors, coaches, and people who uplift and inspire you.
  • Shift from Fear to Abundance: Reframe risk and opportunity to break free from self-doubt and fear of failure.

Welcome to the Treat Your Business podcast, this week, we are going to be talking about the five things that I would do differently if I was starting out from scratch.
The reason that I've chosen to talk about this is because people often see success and see results as a linear kind of process. That's an upward trajectory and when you're comparing yourself against other people, you can often be mistaken that, "Oh, they've got to where they are and it's been really easy for them", or "they just seemed to have success upon success and growth and growth and growth and look at where they are now."
We all compare ourselves even those people that say, "Well, I don't look at anything", there is always an element of you might see somebody, you might look at somebody's life, and sometimes a part of you just make that immediate comparison.
So I wanted to share, I guess, vulnerability on this podcast and reassure you that success comes from not always just an upward trajectory. You start off, you grow a bit, you've got challenges, it drops off, it grows again, it drops off and it's a little bit like a roller coaster.
So today strap yourself in, come and enjoy the rollercoaster with me as I take a closer look at:

  • Treat Your Business Podcast Introduction.
  • Why success is not just an upward trajectory.
  • When you start a business, it’s a roller coaster.
  • The roller coaster at blackpool pleasure beach.
  • The all-hands on deck approach to business.
  • How do I know this? Because I made the exact same mistakes when I opened my first clinic back in 2015.
  • The importance of getting clear on your “why”.
  • Aligning business values with personal values.
  • The second step is to listen to one person.
  • Comparison is the biggest thief of life.
  • Why you need to be aware of your team’s needs.
  • The six working geniuses by Patrick.
  • The five dysfunctions of a team googler.
  • What is a “galvanizer”? What is a founder?
  • Being one of the top geniuses in the world.
  • Tenacity, enablement and tenacity.
  • The monkey on the shoulder is holding you back.
  • The third tip, ask for help.
  • The fourth tip, upgrade your mindset.
  • Making decisions from a place of abundance.
  • The importance of being inspired by others.
  • You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.
  • The fifth step. What to do when you’re at the top of your business.
  • Find a group of people who have already achieved what you want to achieve.
  • Upgrading your thermostat.
  • Get clear on your why.
  • Listen to one person and turn off distractions.

We are surrounded by reasons and evidence that suggests our hourly rate should be low, and I'll give you an example of this "The NHS provides a service on a lot of our services for free", people think that they they can go and get what we provide for free in a service. • Why you need to start working out your hourly rate.
  • We work with insurance companies who think we are worth 35 pounds.
  • When I first launched my business eight and a half years ago, I made the decision that I was going to run a business.
  • An example from a physiotherapist who is overcharging her patients.

Treat Your Business - 104 How to lead when you feel like giving up
play

11/20/24 • 22 min

Send us a text

Hello and welcome back to the Treat Your Business Podcast! Today I want to have a really honest chat with you. Let’s face it, running a clinic can be incredibly tough. It’s not all rainbows and pilates classes, is it? There are moments when it feels like everything is just too much.

In this episode, I’m sharing personal stories, some practical strategies, and a few hard truths about what it really takes to lead when you feel like giving up. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, burnt out, or just plain fed up, this one’s for you.

So, make yourself a brew, take a deep breath, and let’s dive in.

What’s Covered in This Episode?

  • You’re Not Alone
Every clinic owner I know has hit that wall at some point. I’ve been there myself. Whether it’s demanding clients, team challenges, or financial pressures, those moments of “I can’t do this anymore” are more common than you think. It’s okay to feel this way.
  • Reality Check on Leadership
Let’s talk about what it really means to be a leader. It’s emotional, messy, and sometimes downright exhausting. But here’s the thing: your feelings don’t define your ability to lead. It’s what you do next that matters.
  • Actionable Strategies
I share the exact steps I’ve taken (and still take) when everything feels like it’s falling apart:
    • Pause and Brain Dump: Get everything out of your head and onto paper. You can’t tackle the overwhelm until you know what’s actually causing it.
    • Break the Isolation: Talk to someone who gets it—a mentor, a trusted friend, or even a business group. Leaning on others isn’t a weakness; it’s a strength.
    • Focus on Small Wins: Start each day by celebrating three small victories. Progress happens one step at a time, even if it feels slow.
    • Reconnect with Your Why: Remind yourself why you started your clinic. Read your reviews and remember the impact you’re having on people’s lives.
    • Let Go of What No Longer Serves You: Whether it’s outdated services, inefficient systems, or even toxic team members, sometimes you’ve got to make tough decisions to move forward.

Key Takeaways

  1. Leadership isn’t about doing it all. It’s about doing what matters most.
  2. Feeling overwhelmed doesn’t mean you’re failing; it means you care.
  3. Progress is built one small step at a time, so focus on the next brick in your wall.
  4. You’re not alone. Whether it’s reaching out to your team, a community, or your business coach, support is there if you ask for it.
  5. Tough times don’t last, but tough leaders do.

Welcome back, to another exciting episode of the "Treat Your Business Podcast" with your host Katie Bell. Today, Katie is joined in the studio by special guest, Sarah Tribe, Co-Founder of Healthcare Professionals Governance (HCPG). Sarah is here to shed light on the crucial topic of informed consent. If you're a healthcare professional or clinic owner, this episode is a must-listen as we explore the ins and outs of informed consent and its profound impact on your business and patients.
Meet Sarah Tribe and HCPG:
Sarah Tribe is a founding member of HCPG, a company dedicated to helping healthcare professionals navigate the complexities of governance and policies in their businesses. With a background as a physiotherapist and experience in running a care home, Sarah brings valuable insights into the importance of informed consent in healthcare practice.
The Misconception Around Informed Consent:
One of the major misconceptions that Sarah addresses is the belief that obtaining written consent at the first assessment is enough. She clarifies that simply signing a generic form does not constitute informed consent. To truly ensure patients are well-informed and protected, healthcare providers need to have a comprehensive informed consent policy and patient information leaflet.
Understanding the Montgomery Standard:
Sarah highlights the shift from the Bolam standard to the Montgomery standard in healthcare. Under the Montgomery standard, practitioners are required to disclose all potential risks and benefits to patients, allowing them to make an informed decision about their treatment. This can be time-consuming but is an essential aspect of providing transparent and responsible care.
The Importance of Documentation:
Having a policy and patient information leaflet is only one part of the equation. Healthcare professionals must also document all interactions with patients regarding informed consent. Sarah recommends providing patients with a detailed risks and benefits sheet for each treatment modality, ensuring they are fully aware of what to expect.
Informed Consent for Minors and Individuals with Fluctuating Capacity:
Sarah delves into the complexities of obtaining informed consent for minors and individuals with fluctuating capacity. It's essential to understand the three-stage test for mental capacity and work diligently to ensure individuals can make an informed decision about their care. In cases where patients lack capacity, seeking consent from appropriate legal representatives is vital.
Building a Solid Portfolio of Evidence:
By adhering to the principles of informed consent and maintaining a strong portfolio of evidence, healthcare practitioners can protect their businesses and patients alike. Sarah encour
