Don't be fooled into thinking all the travel deals happen in the shoulder seasons. While there are cheaper times to travel, you can still find some gems if you have to travel during the busy seasons. Here's a breakdown of how we spent Christmas in Porto, Portugal and Vigo, Spain for under $2000.
We used Going and got an alert for our flights
Our Marriott Account and Capital One Venture X paid for our hotels (all but $50)
Our bus/train ticket from Porto to Vigo and back again was $40 a piece.
Pair those savings with the fact that Porto and Vigo are not expensive destinations in general and you have a week filled with Michelin restaurants, port wine tours and Christmas markets that won't break the bank.
You don't want to miss today's episode full of some amazing wins and some ridiculous fails.

What if you could add another country to your itinerary with zero costs, and potentially lower your costs? What if you could do the most iconic trip in that country in just one day? On today’s episode we tackle a dirty word in travel - the dreaded LAYOVER - if this word strikes fear into your heart, stick around to find out how a layover can become the highlight of your trip.
#1 How to Use Layovers and When To Choose Them
Layovers can be a pain, but use them correctly and they can be a trip highlight. We would choose a layover with the following criteria:
- It’s not just an overnight layover
- There are no additional visa/documentation requirements (Check out our layover fails to see why we included this!)
- It is either very long or the airport is set up to allow for some exploration (ie: Qatar and Iceland)
- We have the time (our trip is more than a week long)
We had an amazing experience in our Iceland Layover where we got to travel the Golden Circle and even hang out in a “secret” lagoon. We skipped the more touristy hot springs in Iceland but on a return trip, we’d definitely be interested in checking them out.
#2 Success Stories and Fails
- Iceland is our #1 success story. It was actually my favorite country we visited on our 2017 trip (other countries on that trip were Germany, Czech Republic, Austria and Budapest). We (self) toured the golden circle and spent about 15 hours driving around 300km on the first stop. Then on the return trip we got about 8 hours to check out Reykjavik, which included a cute farmer’s market, some amazing fish and chips and some really fun street art. A great way to spend a travel day!
- Our fail is definitely Qatar. We had an 8 hour layover and a booked excursion from the airport to check out some city highlights (a very popular thing to do from this airport). Unfortunately Bruce got COVID and while he was cleared for travel for Uganda, he would not have passed the PCR test that was required to enter Qatar. Unfortunately, that meant we had to cancel the tour and instead had to spend 8 hours lounging in an airport. Not ideal- especially after a 30 hour travel period.

Camping - loved by some for the fresh air, the night sky and closeness to nature. Hated by those who would rather not sleep among the bugs, be away from their beds and have to forgo a hot shower. But there’s more to this accommodation option than what the stereotypes tell us - camping can be affordable, luxurious, unique and a solution for your future group trip. Camping is not one size fits all! Today we share why every traveler should consider camping for their next trip.
In this episode we break down three types of camping to consider for your next trip:
Trailer and RV
- Cheaper than hotels and other accomodations
- Keep your things with you and sleep in your own bed
- Can rent!
Glamping
- Bring your luxury bedroom to the outdoors
- No need to set up camp or have a lot of gear - typically comes with rental
- More expensive but a nice way to explore outdoor accommodations for those who feel camping is not for them
Rustic Camping (Car Camping)
- Cheapest way to stay
- Access nature where RVs can't and hotels require driving
- Top camping items
- Quality tent - we like a good sized one for car camping so we can stand up
- Jetboil or a camp stove
- Portable sink or wash basin
- Nature friendly soap (we like Bonner's)
- Water jug or container (5 gal.)
- Camp cups and silverware
- Headlamp, flashlight, lamps
- Quality cooler - nice it if drains to refresh ice
- Air mattress or roll out
- Hatchet
- Pocket knife
- First aid kit
- Back up chargers/batteries
- Lighter or matches
- Sandals or easy slip ons
- Tarp to put under tent or for extra rain protection
- Toilet paper
- Hanging shower (if none on site)
- Camp chairs and foldable table
- Organizing bins/containers for easy pack in pack out

How to Earn Credit Card Points for Free Travel
So you have your wallet set up, you’ve got your main and supporting player cards, and you’ve mastered the basic travel hack lingo - now what? Today we break down four main ways to maximize your point earning potential and get one step closer to free travel.
If you aren’t sure where to start with travel credit cards- check this out first
I’m not going to lie to you- a lot of travel hackers get the crazy redemptions and amass huge point stacks by what’s called, card churning. That is- getting a bonus from a card, holding it for a year, closing it and reopening it 48 months later (or however long you have to wait to get the bonus again). BUT there are ways you get many points, without churning or with churning only a card or two instead of your full wallet.
What else we cover in today’s episode
-How to earn the most credit card points on everyday spend
-Free apps that help you track your credit card multipliers
-How I accidentally earned points by going out to eat
-What to be careful about when earning credit card points
Make sure to go back and listen to all the episodes on travel hacking during our summer school season!

This is part of our new series where we highlight “easy” weekend trips. We’re part of the 9-5ers that are just looking to use our PTO in the best way possible. Weekend trips are a great way to start to get out there with minimal planning (because it's just a short trip). It's a great way to “get your feet wet” so to speak and work your way up to those bucket list getaways. Weekend getaways obviously vary on how easy or realistic they are based on where you’re based but generally, this is why we say that a trip to Vegas is a great long weekend trip:
- Many flights in and out- a good chance of finding a decently priced flight
- Many hotels including ones that can be used with major credit card point carriers
- It's a place you typically want a taste of, not necessarily a place where you need to spend a week to 10 days to experience the soul of the place.
In today's episode we talk about:
- Best things to do in Las Vegas
- The mistakes we made on our trip to Vegas
- What we would focus on for our next trip!
Would you go to Vegas for the weekend?
