Trashy Divorces - S20E22: Gilded Age Chronicler Edith Wharton
play

12/24/23 • 68 min

Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Edith Wharton came by her subject matter the old fashioned way: she was born into a prominent New York City family, and was subjected to the mores of the city's high society circle from birth. This did not suit the plain, brainy young Edith even a little bit, much to her mother's horror, but Edith did eventually submit to an extremely unhappy marriage to a diagnosed megalomaniac (!), which ended in, you guessed it, a trashy divorce.

This week, Stacie has a 'good divorce,' one where everyone seems to have accepted the situation and stayed friendly and supportive of each other. Unfortunately for actor Lou Diamond Phillips, who by all accounts was very gracious through it all, his first divorce continues to be described in the press as "when his wife, Julie Cypher, left him for Melissa Etheridge." Then, Alicia dips into one of the 20th century's most fascinating sets of siblings, the Mitford Sisters. Diana Mitford married well, but restlessness led her to an affair with British Fascist leader Oswald Mosley, as well as a long-running flirtation with fascism itself.

Shakira isn't just a global pop phenomenon - she's also the rare Trashy Divorces subject who has never actually been married. But two very long relationships, scandalous breakups, and a shadowy hacker group's revelations about tax avoidance make this story a perfect fit anyway.

Trashy Divorces - S20E15: Rock Hudson

S20E15: Rock Hudson

Trashy Divorces

play

11/29/23 • 59 min

Hollywood heartthrob Rock Hudson was everywhere on American screens in the 1950s and 1960s. He was the man every woman wanted, and every man wanted to be, but what Hollywood knew and the public didn't was that Rock Hudson was a fabrication, a character in and of himself. Roy Harold Scherer, later Roy Fitzgerald, was turned into Rock Hudson by one of Hollywood's most notorious talent agents, Henry Willson, known as much for taking sexual advantage of the young men he made stars as for the stars themselves. Rock Hudson navigated the difficult waters of being a gay star in a time when that would have destroyed his career; when he was diagnosed with AIDS in 1984, he made the complicated choice to go public with the news. While he was abandoned by friends Ronald and Nancy Reagan, he became the face of an emerging pandemic so enmeshed with social issues that his candor arguably changed the course not only of the fight against AIDS, but of the gay rights movement in America and worldwide.

We often cite Dumpster Dives as a Patreon benefit, and with so many TD Alums in the news lately, we thought it would be fun to bring one to the main feed. In the Dumpster this week, Alicia talks Grammys magic, of which there was plenty. Stacie takes a musical follow-up with the recent high-profile spat between exes Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake. Then Alicia has thoughts about the spate of medical issues facing Britain's ruling family - King Charles III, Sarah Ferguson, and Kate Middleton are all off to a terrible start in 2024. Stacie updates us on the ongoing legal dispute between exes Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, and the $500 million winery that they just can't seem to quit squabbling over, and Alicia closes us out with some delicious Taylor Swift trashcandy.

And with all that, she's also managed three divorces and four marriages.

Greek shipping magnate and globe trotting rich guy Aristotle Onassis might have been a minor figure in the minds of most Americans if he hadn't inserted himself into the American psychodrama that is the Kennedy family. But obviously, his life and riches did not begin with his courtship of the widowed Jacqueline Kennedy. His story began decades before, with a hot opera singing girlfriend and a dream - of selling cigarettes to women. Hey, everybody starts somewhere.

If you were a 90s kid, you were around for the emergence of skateboarding as a sport, Tony Hawk as its king.
