E14: Martin Whiskin: How to be a voiceover artist!

Tom Meets Interesting People

In the last episode of the season, I met Martin Whiskin to talk about how a voiceover artist makes a living, what goes into the work, and how a voiceover artist can help a business stand out from the crowd.

You can check out the deep-dive reflection on my Substack, where I talk about what I learned and sum up this episode: https://tommeetsinterestingpeople.substack.com/

Martin Whiskin is a voiceover artist who has lent his voice to Lego, RAF, Mercedes, NHS and BMW, to name a few, but his background is much more corporate and far less creative than voiceover.

He worked as a data manager for 20 years while trying to be a "rock star" and was made redundant around the same time he realized that he wasn't good enough to be a famous musician.

Martin was left looking at the skills he'd built up over the years during his time in bands, photography, design, videos etc., to see if any of those skills could be monetized. They couldn't! What was good enough for punk bands wasn't good enough to sell to businesses... but in a roundabout way, this led him to voiceover. Something that, having never had any plans to do anything even remotely like it, he is in love with.

In the second part of this interview, we talk about how Jeremy runs his own business, how it came to be and the challenges he faced, we also share some social media tips for creators and podcasters alike

Jeremy Swick has one of those jobs that is just cool...he is a Historian and Curator with a passion for history, education, and social media. He’s a huge fan of talking history and learning. He’s worked professionally at several institutions ranging from a historic photography museum to the Pro Football Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame and is currently the Head Archivist at the Wisconsin Black Historical Society and Museum.

In part one we talked about his work at the Wisconsin Black Historical Society, where his love of history came from and deep-dived into his love for American Football. We also talked about why museums are important and the role they play in their local communities

E15: Reflecting on the first season

Hey all, so I don't have a guest today, instead, I've got a behind-the-scenes special for you. When this episode goes out, I'll be at my graduation and then make questionable life choices under the influence of alcohol in the evening.

In this episode, I reflect on the past season; what went well, what didn't and what I want to change.
