How the Hippies Saved Physics: Science, Counterculture, and the Quantum Revival
Biography
Dr. Jack Sarfatti is a Ph.D., MS physics University of California, B.A. physics Cornell theoretical physicist whose early career is chronicled in MIT physics historian David Kaiser’s award-winning book ‘How the Hippies Saved Physics.’ He was at the Max Planck Institute (1966) with John Archibald Wheeler and Werner Heisenberg. Sarfatti also worked at the UK Atomic Energy Research Establishment (Harwell). Sarfatti was the leader of the California-based Physics/Consciousness Research Group (PCRG) financed during the 1970s by private philanthropists and the US DOD. Kaiser credits the PCRG with alerting the mainstream physics establishment to the importance of quantum entanglement to practical applications like computers and cryptography. Sarfatti was the science advisor to the Reagan think tank Institute of Contemporary Studies that planned the 1980s-era Strategic Defense Initiative. He has worked for several decades on the theory behind applications of quantum entanglement to conscious AI and the low-energy metric engineering.

Biography Professor Matthew Szydagis received his B.A., M.S., and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 2005, 2006 and 2011 respectively, then continued his work in physics as a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California Davis (2010-2014). Since 2014, he has been a professor at the University at Albany Department of Physics, pursuing experimental particle astrophysics, in particular the direct laboratory detection of dark matter WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles) underground, and general detector development for “rare event” searches. He works on the LUX (Large Underground Xenon) and LZ liquid-Xe based experiments and is the developer of the NEST (Noble Element Simulation Technique) software and the “snowball chamber” supercooled water technology.
