Capacity Building 2.0 - Part 2: Go Beyond One-Off Trainings to Create Systemic Change
THRIVERS: Impact-Driven Leadership for the Next Normal
02/23/23 • 50 min
“Capacity Building” is a phrase that gets tossed around quite a bit in the nonprofit world, but what does it really mean, and how do you know if it’s even working?
Many capacity building models struggle with:
- Overvaluing the expertise of experts vs. the wisdom of nonprofit leaders
- Being one-off or transactional, rarely leading to systemic change within the whole organization
- Often supporting or upholding traditional power structures and dynamics
- Building the social capital of the nonprofit leaders across the community
- Being too expensive - think one consultant for every nonprofit and each of their problems
We must find a more scalable, more efficient way to create real learning and build real capacity for nonprofit leaders.
Enter Capacity Building 2.0... The next normal of capacity building.
In the second episode of our new Capacity Building 2.0 series, Tucker and Sarah are joined by Mina Liebert and Scott Marble to discuss “tent-pole” workshops and how utilizing them has the power to introduce systemic shifts within the organization more easily than the traditional one-off, transactional capacity building model.
It’s time to think beyond individual, one-off trainings as the best way to affect change within your organization. Instead, consider bringing members of the organization and board together to create a “tent-pole” workshop that enables your team to co-create organizational strategies alongside each other. As a nonprofit leader, involving team members in this way takes the burden of figuring out how to communicate learnings back to the organization off of your shoulders and drastically increases team buy-in.
This episode’s guests:
Mina Liebert - Director of Community Impact at the Pikes Peak Community Foundation
Scott Marble - Chief Operating Officer - Colorado Springs Conservatory

Capacity Building 2.0 - Part 3: The Power of Pause, Connection, and Belonging
THRIVERS: Impact-Driven Leadership for the Next Normal
04/06/23 • 59 min
In the third episode of our Capacity Building 2.0 podcast series, Tucker and Sarah are joined by three thoughtful nonprofit leaders from Food to Power, a Colorado Springs organization whose mission is to cultivate a healthy, equitable food system in the greater Colorado Springs community.
Hear from these leaders as they share their experience with belonging in our THRIVERS community and how that amplified learning and growth in a way that straight training couldn't have done.
They get deep on why capacity building MUST incorporate the power of pause, connection, and belonging otherwise we're doing it wrong. It's not a ‘nice to have’, it's a ‘must have’.
This episode’s guests:
- Patience Kabwasa - Executive Director, Food to Power
- Jessi Bustamante - Director of Communications, Food to Power
- Slade Custer - Director of Development, Food to Power

THRIVERS: Impact-Driven Leadership for the Next Normal
12/29/22 • 51 min
The end of the year is a natural, reflective time for a lot of people.
It can also be an extremely hectic time for people as well.
A lot has happened this year: The world seems to be moving on from COVID, inflation is soaring, and people are struggling with a tough job market in the face of a looming recession.
As a nonprofit leader, it’s easy to look at all these things and think, “We need to be doing more to help people.” While this thought is tempting, it could lead you and your team to a state of burnout if you aren’t careful.
In this episode, Tucker and Sarah discuss how our NOs give power to our most important YESes, and share 2 reflective activities and 6 powerful questions they have learned that can help shape your vision for the year ahead.
Instead of looking for more ways to serve, now is the time to double down on reflecting on what is most important to our organizations, and using what we learned in 2022 to ensure that we keep the important things in focus as we move into 2023.
A shout out to @Jon Berghoff and XCHANGE for some of the great questions.

THRIVERS: Impact-Driven Leadership for the Next Normal

The demands of leadership in the nonprofit sector are overwhelming right now.
The need to scale, serve, and make real impact can all too easily lead to neglecting personal wellbeing.
Oftentimes we seem to be faced with the difficult decision of choosing between investing in program development or investing in our staff.
It’s time to consider the powerful shift that occurs when your staff becomes a central part of your transformative journey.
In this episode of THRIVERS, Tucker, Sarah, and their guest Jason Janz, the co-founder of the nonprofit organization CrossPurpose, propose a bold shift in focus — investing more in leaders and less in programs.
Throughout the discussion, they explore the profound impact this shift can have on the health of an organization and the potential for transformational outcomes.
They delve into the idea of nurturing a leadership team that embodies the transformative values of an organization and prioritizes their own growth and development as a path to achieving greater impact.

From Charity to Change: Mastering Effective Program Evaluation
THRIVERS: Impact-Driven Leadership for the Next Normal
05/04/23 • 43 min
How can you ensure your nonprofit is genuinely creating positive change rather than unintentionally causing harm?
Nonprofit leaders should aim to “do no harm”, and evaluating programs is a crucial step in ensuring that nonprofits are making a positive impact instead of causing unintended negative consequences.
Unfortunately, it can be challenging to evaluate your programs effectively, especially with limited resources and expertise.
It's time to shift from charity to change.
In our latest episode of THRIVERS, Tucker and Sarah dive deep into the challenges of evaluation and how to overcome them. They discuss the importance of understanding the pains of evaluation, such as:
- The lack of proper training in conducting evaluations
- Balancing necessary resources
- Making evaluations accessible for community-based nonprofits
- Aligning good intentions with good science
They also highlight the importance of avoiding common pitfalls in program evaluation:
- It's essential not to expand programs without evaluating the existing ones, and
- Always resist generalizing impact from one segment to another (e.g., assuming success with high schoolers translates to middle schoolers).
Join us for an insightful discussion on overcoming evaluation challenges and embracing practical advice on how to transform your nonprofit's approach to evaluation.
