119. Oliver Zeffman - Classical Pride ‘24
Three In A Bar
07/01/24 • 50 min
We’re back!!! We’ve missed you all....but what a way to kick off this season of TIAB than with none other than Artistic director and founder of Classical Pride Uk Oliver Zeffman.
Oliver is an internationally renowned conductor, working frequently with orchestras including the CBSO, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse, Orchestre national d'Île-de-France and Ulster Orchestra.
Oliver founded Classical Pride in 2023 with an inaugural concert by the CBSO at the Barbican. This year it has been extended to 5 concerts starting with Classical Drag and culminating with Oliver making his LSO debut at the Barbican in a concert celebrating LBGTQ+ artists and composers hosted by Nick Grimshaw (find ticket links below).
We took Oliver on a walk around central London to chat all things Pride plus future plans, lockdown films, TV recommendations and where he gets his batons from!!
In true TIAB fashion this trip was littered with complications including technical issues, reversing forklifts and a bird poo incident...What other way would we want to make our comeback?!

This week’s episode was a total pleasure to record as we are joined by Australian cellist, singer and songwriter Monique Clare.
Monique is currently on a European tour and will be appearing at the Cambridge folk festival this month. Aside from festivals, she can frequently be found with her cello up mountains, on cliff tops and more conventionally in concert halls and jazz clubs across the world.
Monique chats to Seb and Verity about some of her recent performances as well as recording her latest album Sight, performing with rap legend Eminem, her musical roots and how the heck she manages to so successfully sing and play at the same time!
In fact, Monique goes one step further and tries to teach Verity how to do the same. You’ll be delighted to hear the results are all recorded for your listening pleasure?!
Better than this, Monique gives us an extraordinary performance at the end of this episode which is not to be missed!
This podcast is released in association with D'Addario. D'Addario is the world's largest musical instrument accessories manufacturer and is committed to sustainably providing musicians with the most innovative musical accessories in the world.

106. Darren Beckett
Three In A Bar
09/20/23 • 73 min
In Episode 106, Seb and Verity are joined for a chat (and some top grade pastry based products) by drumming titan, Darren Beckett.
Darren has worked with countless artists including Brandon Flowers, Madeleine Peyroux , Van Morrison and Lauryn Hill and was a member of the band Ambulance LTD. Equally at home across a multitude of styles and genres, recently Darren was the drummer for The National Theatre’s multi award winning show Standing At The Sky’s Edge.
Seb and Verity shared a highly enjoyable afternoon with Darren and after some extensive editing of slander and swears - well, most of them, conversation ranges from his studies in Germany & NYC to being chased by crackheads and meeting Taylor Hawkins.
Darren talks about moving away from the pure blood jazz scene in New York into an eclectic range of career choices. Some sterling work is done on behalf of the Eastbourne tourist board and there is a slightly embarrassing and enlightening round of ‘guess the BPM’.....why on earth get into that when your guest is a hugely successful drummer?!

100. A century not out feat. Hannah Lawrance
Three In A Bar
08/08/23 • 80 min
Who’d have thought it? Back in 2019 when two fresh(ish) faced, young(ish) podcasters headed off to South London for their first recording, armed with all the gear and little to no idea, that they’d be hitting the 100th episode mark and still be going!! No one? Thanks a bunch....
So here it is, episode 100 and for this special edition Seb and Verity are joined by multi-instrumentalist legend and dear friend Hannah Lawrance. Hannah stipulated from early days that she would only come onto the pod if she was asking the questions.....with that in mind, we’ve collected various former TIAB guests to put questions to Seb and Verity via Hannah, whilst they have sneakily turned the tables back on her too, mwah ha ha!
Warning; this episode features some serious belting along with reminiscences of early meetings, past episodes and cringe worthy experiences. There are contributions from loads of TIAB favourites and a message from some guy who’s profile was significantly raised by appearing on this podcast....You are welcome Mr Brydon.
Thank you dear listeners for your continued support and bring on the next 100 eps, woo hoo!

91. Alex Ho
Three In A Bar
01/18/23 • 72 min
This week’s episode features British-Chinese composer, Alex Ho. Alex was the winner of the Critic’s Circle Young Artist Award 2021, is the recipient of the PRS Composers’ fund 2023 and is a BBC Music Magazine Rising Star of 2022. He also happens to be a flippin’ great guy!
Seb and Verity met Alex back in November 2022, days ahead of the premier of his new work Carved in Gorton Stone, performed by the Manchester Camerata at Gorton Monastery. They discuss the premise of this piece and it’s site specific nature - at one stage a UK monastery tour is mooted although not sure Alex is convinced....
They talk about Tangram, the collaborative cross arts ensemble Alex co-founded and some of the influential relationships and new possibilities this has led to.
Alex talks about Untold, his ‘Anti Opera’ and how this work confronts the issues of racism towards East Asians communities, particularly in opera.
They discuss getting a work/life balance, experimenting with found sounds, Alex’s love of musical theatre and what a Yangquin is - 50 points if you already know!

92. Camilla Pay
Three In A Bar
01/25/23 • 83 min
This week’s guest is queen of the harp and all round magnificent human Camilla Pay.
Milly is hugely in demand as a session player - the extensive list of artists she has worked with includes John Legend, Bette Midler, Beyoncé and Morrissey. She is on countless film soundtracks - most recently Matilda the musical, and had performed on many major TV shows.
Warning: If you are hoping for some hardcore harp chat this might not be the pod for you - having listened to Nate Williams’ excellent In Session with....Camilla Pay podcast (link below) Seb & Verity felt like an alternative approach might be called for!
So.....subjects include anxiety dreams, car snacks, excruciating celebrity encounters, miming (not on harp), best toilets in London, retirement plans and Whitney the movie.
They edge dangerously close to music chat discussing Milly’s chamber group the Korros Ensemble, some early cruise experiences and her and Seb’s shared experience on Follies at the National Theatre.

90. Charlie Baker
Three In A Bar
01/11/23 • 82 min
We are going full steam into 2023 with a belter of a guest for you...it’s comedian, actor, broadcaster and acclaimed jazz singer Charlie Baker.
Charlie has appeared on shows including The Last Leg, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Richard Osman’s House of Cards and starred in the leading role of Tony Blair in Harry Hill’s Tony! (The Tony Blair Rock Opera)
Seb and Verity met up with Charlie back in late October 2022 - you’ll understand why it’s taken so long to release when you hear the hair brained plans they commit to.
Charlie chats about his upcoming tour, 24hr Pasty People (ticket link below) which leads to a thorough description of West Country treasure, Trago Mills...if you know you know. They discuss the art of talking between songs in gigs, some iconic performers he’s seen recently and some major regrets for ones he’s elected to miss.
Charlie sets Seb and Verity a challenge which will require some input from you, our dear listeners! All will become clear - see what you think and drop us an email or contact us through our socials.

85. Joel Montague
Three In A Bar
09/30/22 • 84 min
It’s podcast dah da da dah day (sorry, couldn’t resist it!) and this week’s guest is the newly crowned King George at West End musical phenomenon Hamilton - Joel Montague.
Joel is an actor, choreographer and director who has a stellar list of West End shows he has performed in including Chicago, The Waitress, School of Rock and Funny Girl.
The conversation happens in an entirely halloween themed living room.....on September 26th which proved the perfect back drop for weird and wonderful chat!
Joel takes us behind the scenes to glimpse life at the Palace Theatre, including what he does in his loooooong breaks, what warm up looks like for the King and how he gets into that enormous costume.
They discuss Disneyland, FIFA, their shared experience on Funny Girl and working opposite Sheridan Smith.
There are some excellent rants and some interesting Royals debate so buckle up and get ready for a fun filled episode!

84. Joby Burgess
Three In A Bar
09/14/22 • 96 min
This week Seb and Verity venture into the Bedfordshire countryside to meet virtuoso percussionist Joby Burgess.
Joby is embarking on a UK tour at the end of September performing his new album A Percussionist’s Songbook - a collection of specially commissioned songs by eight composers, including Graham Fitkin, Dobrinka Tabakova, Gabriel Prokofiev and Joby himself!
The conversation takes place in Joby’s home studio which in a former life was both a coach house and a hairdresser - conversation ranges from where they are going on holiday this year to whether it’ll be a full head of highlights or a half...only kidding!
Joby discusses how the balance of his career has shifted over the last few years with a much greater emphasis on recording. With this in mind, he chats about the prospect of returning to live performances with a mixture of excitement and trepidation.
They discuss Joby’s weird, wonderful and extensive collection of percussion instruments, Tom Cruise’s penchant for bongos, workshopping and recording Little Simz’s epic album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert and the pitfalls of performing using a full Fanta bottle and electronics with reference to a specific incident in Cambridge...

Our guest for episode 131 is composer, arranger and musical director Jordan Li-Smith. On a music theatre bingo card we are looking at an impressive full house for Jordan - as a child he performed in West End productions of Oliver and Les Miserables, He's MD'd a huge number of shows including an international tour of Titanic and he's written a couple of shows to boot! Oh, and the crowning glory...Jordan was a finalist on the Andrew Lloyd-Webber/BBC talent show, I'd Do Anything. What a blinkin' legend.
We chatted to Jordan back in 2024 as he was about to embark on a national tour of Here We Come Again, a show crammed with Dolly Parton hits. We talk about the wonders of Dolly and the resurgence in popularity of Country music. We also cover touring in China, click issues, meeting Angela Lansbury and the mammoth role of an MD.
Jordan talks about his (brilliant) first full length musical The Boy Who Sailed an Ocean in an Armchair and the many stages he's been through to get to a fully staged production. He has some excellent advice for budding young musical composers and very kindly recorded a little catch up segment to make up for our tardiness in releasing this wonderful episode!
