About 2,200 years ago, the Jewish Nation faced an existential threat: The Assyrian Greek Empire led by Antiochus and his Hellenist henchmen undertook a concerted campaign to systematically eradicate the Jewish religion. They sought to make the Jews forget the Torah and depart from the mitzvos; they defiled the Temple; they harassed the Jewish daughters; and they banned the observance of many mitzvos on pain of death. But the Almighty did not forsake His people. He stood up for them in their time of sorrow; He waged their wars; He judged the judgment; He avenged their vengeance, and aided the Jews to total victory over their Greek overlords. To remember that miracle, and the miracle of the oil that lasted 8x its intended length, the Sages established the 8-day holiday of Chanukah. In this podcast we survey the history, laws, and customs of Chanukah.

There is a learnable quality the underpins every transformational change and improvement that humanity has achieved. It is what separates the people who are inspired to change and actually implement grand ideas from the common folk who do not influence the world for the better.

Mussar is the tool that we can use to integrate Torah into ourselves and change our character. A Mussar master is someone who is spiritually alive. In this special lecture, we try to tell a story of how Mussar masters operated during the inferno that engulfed European Jewry during the Holocaust. By recounting the heroic actions of these giants we can learn valuable lessons for our own spiritual lives.

*This lecture was recorded live in Harrisburg, PA as part of a three-lecture visit to the capital of Pennsylvania.

This Jewish Life - With Rabbi Yaakov Wolbe - Tackling Temptation: Can we possibly succeed against life’s most formidable foe?
play

12/15/13 • 64 min

In this class Rabbi Wolbe sets out to demystify and unlock the secrets of one of mankind’s greatest challenges and struggles: temptation. Culling from an array of ancient Judaic texts we will begin with defining, demarcating and delineating the anatomy of temptation; focusing on the reason why forbidden fruit (or carbs) is so alluring and irresistible. Once we gain a keen understanding of the makeup of this great adversary, we will learn the Four distinct Talmudic approaches to curbing and managing temptation. If you have ever struggled with temptation of any sort; i.e. if you are a human, and especially if you have tried dieting unsuccessfully, you cannot miss this class. Lives will be changed. Forever.
