Ep 8: Baking Bread Is Good for You
This is Good for You
05/14/21 • 49 min
I’m talking with the fantastic Bim Adewunmi all about her experience of learning how to bake bread. I need you to know: this won’t be your typical conversation about kneading dough. Bim helps me realize that learning this kind of skill is life-affirming in more ways than one. What happens when you decide to follow a trend and find lasting joy? And will this skill help you in a zombie apocalypse?
Indulgence
Nichole recommends the Canadian ice dancing champions. Bim recommends jigsaw puzzles, like this one.
Guest
Bim Adewunmi is a journalist and radio producer at This American Life, and used to cohost Thirst Aid Kit with Nichole Perkins. She's also a playwright and TV writer. She loves eating carbs, and urges you to join her on her never-ending quest of tasting all the world's iterations of "look what we did with this potato.”

Ep 30: Birdwatching Is Good For You
This is Good for You
04/29/22 • 39 min
As much as birds bother me, there’s something enviable about them. They can just take off when they’re tired of us, and pull up to the wide view of everything. Maybe that’s why folks are so interested in watching them. I put my annoyance with birds aside and ask my guest Grace Bonney what’s so wonderful about following these little creatures of land and air.
Indulgence
Nichole recommends a cooking class!
Guest
Grace Bonney founded the blog Design*Sponge, the print magazine, Good Company and hosted two podcasts, After the Jump and Good Company Radio. Grace has written three best-selling books, Design*Sponge at Home, In the Company of Women, and Collective Wisdom. Grace lives in the Hudson Valley with wife, Julia, and their three pets. Grace is currently studying to be a Marriage and Family Therapist at Syracuse University.

This is Good for You
04/15/22 • 41 min
We’ve been doing this for one year! I can’t believe it.
As an anniversary present, producer Eric interviewed me about how I ask questions, reveal truths to guests, and turn the things I like into work.

Ep 15: Running Is Good For You
This is Good for You
09/03/21 • 41 min
I know so many people who swear by running, but I cannot understand it. I have to run... outside... in front of other people? I just don’t get it. That is why I have writer and journalist Lyz Lenz on the show today to help demystify the whole thing of running and how it has become an essential part of her life.
Content Warning: this conversation touches on topics of sexual assault and miscarrage.
Indulgence
Nichole recommends stepping outside of your comfort pop culture zones, like watching Summertime on Netflix.

Her second book Belabored, was published in 2020 by Bold Type Books. Lyz’s essay “All the Angry Women” was also included in the anthology Not that Bad edited by Roxane Gay. Ep 16: Cannabis Is Good For You
This is Good for You
10/01/21 • 41 min
Cannabis does what I need it to do and I don’t need much else, but I had to do some research to settle my fears about certain things, including examining who gets to be the cool, funny stoner and who gets to be labeled criminals and degenerates. That is why I’m talking to Laura OG, founder of SMKBRK, who is advocating for equity and diversity within the cannabis industry and hopes to normalize seeing women in all discussions about weed.
Indulgence
Nichole recommends a return to jewelry!
Guest
Laura OG is a cannabis cultivator, educator, and consultant dedicated to teaching women how to incorporate cannabis into their everyday life through conscious consumption and self-care practices. She is an advocate for equity and diversity within the cannabis industry and founded SMK BRK in the pursuit of normalizing conversations between women and cannabis through storytelling, design, events, and music curation. She lobbies for home grows and believes everyone should have the knowledge and space to grow their own medicine.

Ep 19: “For Colored Nerds” Is Good For You
This is Good for You
11/12/21 • 35 min
This episode is two things good for you for the price of one from some of my favorite longtime podcasters. Brittany Luse and Eric Eddings started For Colored Nerds, which morphed into The Nod, and now they’re bringing back For Colored Nerds, and I can’t wait for it. But today, we’re talking about what they do when they’re not working: the pleasures of wandering aimlessly and coloring outside the lines.
Indulgence
Brittany recommends eating by yourself. Eric recommends A Million Little Things.
Guests
Brittany Luse is an award-winning journalist, on-air host, cultural critic, producer, and editor. She most recently co-hosted and executive produced The Nod with Brittany and Eric, a daily streaming show. Before that, Brittany hosted and produced The Nod and Sampler podcasts at Gimlet Media, and the independent podcast For Colored Nerds. Follow her @bmluse on Twitter and Instagram.
Eric Eddings is the Director of Lifestyle Podcasting at Stitcher and co-host of the For Colored Nerds podcast. He most recently co-hosted and executive produced The Nod with Brittany and Eric, a daily streaming show about Black culture on the Quibi platform. Previously, Eric hosted and produced the podcasts The Nod for Gimlet Media and The Decade Wrapped for Spotify. Follow him @eedings on Twitter and Instagram.

Ep 17: Nostalgia Is Good For You
This is Good for You
10/15/21 • 44 min
One of the ways I end up stuck inside during the winter is too much comfort tv. I’ll burrow into a cave of old sitcoms from my high school days when all I had to worry about was how not to get caught skipping school. I don’t fool myself into thinking the old days are better. I know they’re simply different, but sometimes the nostalgia does take over. But Tracy Clayton and Josh Gywnn, hosts of Back Issue, love that nostalgia so much they made a podcast examining it.
Indulgence
Josh recommends big cooking projects. Tracy recommends elementary-school-style arts and crafts.
Guests
Tracy Clayton is a writer, humorist, podcaster, and social media expert born and raised in the West End of Louisville, Kentucky. Tracy is co-host of the award-winning podcast Another Round with Heben and Tracy. She loves bourbon, true crime, animals and fancy cheeses, and hates most seafood, all beer, and every owl on the planet. She is the co-creator and co-host of Back Issue.
Josh Gwynn is an audio producer and host from Southern California who has created work for companies like Pineapple Street Media, The New York Times, Netflix, Essence, Stitcher, Mailchimp, and Nike. He is passionate about providing platforms for underserved voices. Given his California roots, Josh describes his vibe as a combination of palm trees, confetti, limes, rhythm, vitamin E oil, melanin, and bones. He is still waiting on a ticket to Oprah’s Legends Luncheon. He is the co-creator, co-host, and senior producer of Back Issue.

Ep 20: Puzzles Are Good For You
This is Good for You
11/26/21 • 33 min
The holidays are hard for me, so I'm constantly looking for things to occupy myself in a way that suits me. Last year, I started buying jigsaw puzzles. Someone on Twitter posted a puzzle that was a collection of erotic pulp fiction and I thought “well, surely that was made for me!” It was great until I adopted my cat, who liked to sit on top of the puzzle and pull at it. But my special guest today may convince me to get back into them!
Rachel mentions the NYT Guide to starting crossword puzzles, the Queer Qrosswords collection, and her Buzzfeed piece on puzzles. Her favorite puzzle producers are Galison, Mudpuppy, and NY Puzzle Co (especially ones by Jim Golden).
Indulgence
Nichole recommends showing off.
Guest
Rachel Wilkerson Miller is a Senior Editor at Vox and the author of The Art of Showing Up: How to Be There for Yourself and Your People and Dot Journaling: A Practical Guide. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, BuzzFeed, VICE, and Huffington Post, and she’s been a guest on NPR, the Today show, and Good Morning America. Ep 2: Needlecraft is Good for You
This is Good for You
02/19/21 • 39 min
At the beginning of 2020, I realized I didn’t have a hobby that was not monetized. One day, I was cleaning up a bit and came across a cross-stitch project I’d abandoned, and little angels started singing. So I talked to two people for whom needlecraft is really important: my mom and BadassCrossStitch.
Indulgence
Nichole recommends Blood of Zeus!
Guest
Shannon Downey is the artist, activist, and craftivist behind @BadassCrossStitch.
