What does a movie musical vocal coach do?
Singer and pedagogue Irene Bartlett is back to chat with vocal trainers Gillyanne & Jeremy about coaching Austin Butler to sing Elvis in the latest movie, and how she works with singing teachers in the Pedagogy Programme at Griffith University in Brisbane.
What was the first thing Irene needed to do when meeting Austin (or any singer) for the first time? (3.00)
What is she listening for when working with professional singers? (6.53)
How do we know whether a singer has real tension or whether they're adding it "for effect"? (12.00)
How do you teach singing teachers to become BETTER singing teachers? We're all in agreement, but on what? Jeremy clarifies (22.40)
Why might "the 5 note scale" be a problematic exercise for singers? (24.00 and 25.40)
It’s an honest conversation between vocal trainers separated by 10,000 miles but together in spirit.

What is good singing? Singer and pedagogue Dr Irene Bartlett joins vocal trainers Gillyanne & Jeremy to talk about good singing, function and style.
It’s an honest conversation between vocal trainers separated by 10,000 miles but together in spirit.

  • Is it divisive to separate classical, CCM and Musical Theatre music? Irene has a great one-sentence answer to this (2.40)
  • Is there a difference between classical singing lessons and musical theatre singing lessons? How do classical singers react to their first heavy metal, or newbies react to their first opera? It’s a fascinating part of the conversation about vocal technique, sound output, performing environment and genre.
  • What happens when you look at a spectrogram of a classical versus a contemporary singer? (5.36 onwards)
  • What do a lot of acoustically trained singers get wrong about working with a mic? (8.10)
  • And what does Irene do first in a singing lesson (that Gillyanne and Jeremy applaud her for)? (10.30)
  • Which “standard” MT vocal technique does Gillyanne think needs a flight correction? (11.19)
  • And why does Jeremy think your “vocal look” isn’t relevant in Musical Theatre but is relevant in CCM? (16.45)

No? Yes!
What makes a voice more interesting to listen to? Tone? Volume?
Pitch patterns help your listeners understand your emotions and meaning. In this episode, expert vocal trainers Dr Gillyanne Kayes and Jeremy Fisher riff on pitch patterns and meaning in speaking voice.
Exercise 26 on page 84 of our This Is A Voice book is a brilliant vocal technique exercise for improving your speaking (and singing). We go step by step through the instructions and demonstrate how the exercise works in both male and female voice.
Jeremy demonstrates monotonous voice, a very boring version of the test sentences. And both Gillyanne and Jeremy speak with extreme pitch changes, giving a totally different meaning to the same words.
And we walk you through a pitching exercise in our One Minute Voice Warmup app too.
It's a cracking episode, one of our best so far.
If you want to discover how to increase your speaking range, improve your voice use and get your listeners more interested in what you're saying, tune in to this episode!

This Is A Voice - Coaching Austin Butler for Elvis & training teachers - Irene Bartlett returns

Transcript

Irene

I have to say Austin was amazing. He just was such a work ethic. Um, he really wanted to get this right. So I followed my instinct, my normal instincts. I didn't go, "This is a star and I've gotta get him to sing Elvis". I just went, I've gotta get him to sing efficiently and then I've gotta get him to sing in style, the style he wants and needs, and I have to analyze the style. So I was doing a lot of listening on my own, you know, What is Elvis doi
