This Golden Hour

In this podcast, we specifically serve new homeschool families through engaging conversations with homeschool parents and families at all levels of experience and expertise. Listeners will increase their confidence and assurance about their children's education and future while diminishing their fears. This podcast helps you know how to begin homeschooling, navigate challenges, and answer questions for all stages of the journey.
The name “This Golden Hour” has meaning. First, this name refers to the years parents have to raise and teach their children from birth to when they leave home to be on their own. As parents, we have a golden opportunity to teach and learn alongside our children during these formative and essential years of growth and development. Second, “This Golden Hour” points to this same period of childhood as the children’s chance to read, explore nature, and enjoy an inspiring atmosphere of family, love, and learning.

This Golden Hour - 39. Pat Farenga and johnholtgws.com
play

01/02/24 • 57 min

In today’s episode, we get to spend time with Pat Farenga from Boston, Massachusetts. Pat grew up in New York and eventually ended up in Boston for postsecondary studies. After completing his Master's degree, and with the challenge of finding available work in the early 1980s, Pat ended up working at a bookstore in Boston. Unbeknown to Pat, this bookstore was below the office of John Holt, one the most influential figures for the modern unschooling and homeschooling movements. When John Holt died in 1985, Pat became the publisher of the well-known homeschooling newsletter, Growing without Schooling (GWS), and president of Holt Associates. More recently, Pat has finished preparing all 143 issues of GWS and has made these available online. Mr. Farenga is an unschooling father of 3 daughters, an accomplished pianist and saxophonist, and he is a prolific writer, best known as the author of The Beginner's Guide to Homeschooling (1998) and Teach Your Own: The John Holt Book of Homeschooling (2003). During our conversation, we discussed many of the unfortunate problems with the conventional school system and how it is designed to stifle curiosity and the love of learning. We also talk about how homeschooling and unschooling allow families to escape the arbitrary benchmarks that plague schools and their students. This episode is of interest to all who are seeking an alternative to conventional schools, and we are given access to many resources to help us improve education and lifestyle.

This Golden Hour - 64. Topics with Timmy: Big Homeschool Mistake 1
play

05/29/24 • 8 min

In this episode, host Timmy Eaton discusses a common mistake made by new homeschool families. People just starting the homeschool journey want someone to tell them exactly what to do and what to get. And that's backwards, because you started homeschooling so that you could increase freedom and flexibility and customize your learning and lifestyle. The better way is to establish your purposes, priorities, and goals and then customize a plan that suits your situation. HELP, home education and lifestyle principles, is a process Timmy uses with homeschool families, and it is the most effective way to help them develop their own plan. When homeschool families implement the principles of HELP, they learn and live the way they desire, and homeschooling becomes much more enjoyable and fulfilling.

In today’s episode, we get to spend time with Mary Prather from Atlanta, Georgia. Mary is a homeschool mother of two who have both graduated and are currently working on their respective degrees in university. Mary’s homeschool friend helped her get started and the Prather’s have never looked back. At first, Mary’s parents were quite concerned, but after only a year they saw the benefits of homeschooling and the progress of their grandchildren. Throughout our conversation, Mary shares countless tips and resources for homeschool families. Among these resources are Mary’s own materials from her business called Squilt, which stands for “super quiet uninterrupted listening time.” Squilt evolved from Mary’s husband encouraging Mary to start a blog which led to many people requesting her lessons on music appreciation for their families. Mary continues to nurture her blog, Homegrown Learners, and enjoys working with her husband in Squilt.

This Golden Hour - 51. Gena Suarez and The Old Schoolhouse
play

02/23/24 • 90 min

In today’s episode, we get to spend time with Gena Suarez from Tennessee. Gena is a homeschool mother of 7, and she also has 9 grandchildren who are homeschooled. She is the founder and creator of The Old Schoolhouse, which started out in 2001 as a homeschool newsletter on eBay. Initially, The Old Schoolhouse was principally a magazine to connect homeschool families, but it has grown tremendously and offers a wide variety of resources and products. Unlike many couples who decide to homeschool, it was Gena’s husband, Paul, who wanted to homeschool, to which Gena was initially opposed. Soon, Gena began to observe the benefits of homeschooling, like having a wide circle of friends and being able to relate and interact with people of all ages without becoming anxious. In our discussion, we emphasized the blessing of enjoying more freedom through the choice to homeschool. Gena helps listeners understand that there are many options when it comes to education, postsecondary studies, and one’s general lifestyle. Her experience and wisdom encourage and embolden all of us who are seeking alternatives to the traditional, conventional path.

This Golden Hour - 3. Crystal the Parenting Coach
play

07/21/23 • 74 min

In today’s episode, we get to spend time with Crystal and JD Haitsma from Alberta, Canada. In this conversation, we explore several benefits of the homeschool environment, including fostering relationship-building, self-directed learning, thinking outside the box, and helping children with their emotional development. We discuss how screens and electronics impede learning and that boredom is good for kids so that they tap into their creativity and innovation. The Haitsma’s teach us about neurodivergence and how homeschooling provides a more ideal setting to help neurodivergent children. They observe that teachers in the schools are not equipped with the resources and time they would need to attend to all the needs of the students in their classrooms in the way that homeschool parents are able to do at home with their children. Crystal shares her thoughts about attachment-based research and its implications in the homeschool setting. She explains how mothers and parents have intuition to customize the learning for each child, and that parents can work with their kids to determine curriculum and learning.

This Golden Hour - 40. Scott Postma and Kepler Education
play

01/02/24 • 79 min

In today’s episode, we get to spend time with Scott Postma from Idaho. Scott is a homeschool father of four and a grandfather of six, all of whom are homeschooled. He has a PhD in Humane Letters from Faulkner University, and he's the president and CEO of Kepler Education, a marketplace for live online classical Christian education. Named after the famous German astronomer, Johannes Kepler, Kepler Education helps students enjoy the freedom of homeschooling with the expertise of a broad faculty. Before their first child was born in 1991, Scott's wife already knew she wanted to homeschool, but Scott thought that was a weird idea and took some time to get on board. Now, Scott cannot imagine sending a child into the public system. One of the things Scott loves most about homeschooling is the emphasis on cultivating lifelong learners. In our conversation, we talked about the importance of making decisions according to our worldview, and we lamented how much waste we observe in the way educational resources are allocated. However, we both feel optimistic about the growth of home education and other alternatives to the conventional system. Although the homeschool journey can be overwhelming and has many challenges, Scott reminds us to keep it simple, read a lot, and to not take ourselves too seriously.
