In this episode, we start by giving advice to a Redditor who is unsure if she should get a DNA test, despite her mom's warnings. We speculate on why her mother might not want her to uncover the truth - could she be adopted, or was her dad a sperm donor? Ultimately, she decides not to pursue the test. Is that the right call?
Next, we dive into a reddit post from a couple who concealed their genders to seek unbiased advice on their relationship. It soon becomes clear that the writer is a man who doesn't want to stay in the relationship. Skipping our mental health check-in, we review the HBO documentary Slave Play: Not a Movie. A Play. We discuss the initial outrage, the taboo topics it addresses, and the racial themes it explores.
We then delve into Nicole LePera, The Holistic Psychologist, and her substantial following. Javae begins by sharing her extensive research and initial reluctance to discuss the topic, followed by a description of LePera’s podcast, platform, and captivating language. Rachel adds her insights on the brand and its goals for subscribers. We then analyze a few podcast episodes, examining how their broad generalizations could be harmful to some groups. We conclude with a discussion on accusations of pseudoscience, LePera's strong belief in CPTSD, and more!

Main Topics and Themes: This episode dives deep into personal and relational drama, examining how betrayal, guilt, and hidden secrets affect people's lives—both on Reddit and reality TV (*Love is Blind* DC). We explore mental health themes in therapy critiques, raising questions about the field’s detachment. Finally, we pivot to a broader political conversation about media narratives, social pressure, and the evolving role of leadership, with Kamala Harris’ Fox News appearance providing a timely backdrop.
______
We kick off the episode like always—with some juicy Reddit drama! First up, a woman is feeling guilty after breaking things off with her cheating partner but not saying goodbye to his daughter after two years. Should she reach out? We have mixed opinions on that. Then, we respond to a surprising claim that training turns therapists into apathetic robots, disconnected from real-life experiences. Finally, we dive into a Redditor’s discovery of her husband’s secret social media account. Spoiler: it's probably not good news.
In the midsection, we discuss *Love is Blind* DC, focusing on two couples. First, we analyze the seemingly perfect pairing of Tyler and Ashley, which nearly crumbled when Tyler revealed he's a sperm donor to three children. We unpack the internet’s theories and wait to see what else unfolds. Next, we’re left stunned by Alex and Tim’s shocking breakup—apparently over nothing! We explore Tim’s sudden behavior change and what might be driving it. Spoiler: Ashley dodged a bullet there.
We close out with a political discussion sparked by VP Kamala Harris’ interview on *Fox News* with Brett Baier. We react to her agenda, while Javae dives into how shifting social narratives influence today’s political discourse. We also challenge the "both sides" argument and debate the role of the president in shaping public opinion.

Therapy Rebranded - We Recorded Our Bosses!

We Recorded Our Bosses!

Therapy Rebranded

09/24/24 • 61 min

In this episode, Rachel's still away in Europe, so Javae's best friend Patrice joins as a guest co-host with a surprise—a recording of a meeting from 2017 when they both worked at a job they loathed. Patrice shares the audio where she (and somehow Javae, even though she wasn’t there) gets reprimanded for being late and working too closely together on tasks. But before we dig into that juicy throwback...

We kick things off by diving into some tough Reddit questions. First, a grieving wife discovers her late husband was unfaithful throughout their entire relationship. We unpack the emotional layers of complicated grief. Next, we respond to someone whose cousin committed a serious crime, but their family is brushing it off—what happens when your family’s moral compass is completely off? Lastly, we tackle a dilemma about a coworker "stealing time"—should they mind their business or risk loyalty for the sake of ethics?

Finally, we get into the core of the episode: the job that strengthened Patrice and Javae’s friendship. They reflect on their time at a toxic workplace, talk about feeling micromanaged, and share insights on race, gender, and workplace dynamics. Tune in for the laughs, real talk, and some throwback drama!

Bridging Faith and Mental Health with Toni Taylor
We kick off this episode with special guest Toni Taylor, LPCC, MA, RYT! Toni is a faith-based counselor who blends mental health research with Christianity to support clients without discrediting their beliefs. She shares her approach to helping clients with religious trauma, processing their relationship with God, and rethinking their beliefs. Toni discusses how faith can be an intervention tool, using scriptures, Christian-based resources, and prayer in sessions. Her goal is to “be the gap in between” faith and mental health.
Next, we dive into our first Reddit dilemma: a woman discovers her husband is paying a $900 car payment for “an old family friend.” Initially, he lied but has now confessed. Can they recover from this, or should she leave to avoid a lifetime of drama? All three therapists weigh in on how they'd handle this situation.
In the second Reddit story, a woman is devastated when her new husband admits he doesn't find her attractive. The therapists have differing opinions on whether her husband was wrong and how to move forward.
We then discuss Meagan Good’s appearance on Club ShayShay, focusing on her relationship with religion. Javae expresses concern over her acting coach introducing her to religion at 12, while Toni provides a different perspective, challenging the notion that children shouldn’t explore religion without their parents.
We also explore a couple from season 4 of "Couples Therapy," Joey and Rex, whose relationship issues are deeply intertwined with religion. We debate who is in the wrong and whether they can make it work. It becomes clear that religion is a distraction from her unhealthy close relationship with her mother. We wrap up with a discussion on how religion and therapy are often seen as being at odds with each other.

06/26/24 • 66 min

We kick off the episode by diving into our opinions on weight loss drugs, discussing their effectiveness and cost. Rachel opens up about her personal judgments towards people who use these drugs and how she manages to keep these feelings from affecting her clients. Javae explores the mood, self-esteem, and health benefits lost by not pursuing weight loss naturally. We question the sustainability of weight loss off the drug, the long-term use of type 2 diabetes medications by non-diabetics, and the potential dissatisfaction for those with body dysmorphia or eating disorders.
Next, we tackle the topic of food addiction and obesity, pondering whether obesity could ever be classified as a disease. After a brief check-in, we continue the conversation on Patreon.
We then move on to the intricacies of blended families, discussing the challenges and shifting perceptions of family as relationships between step-parents and parents end. Both therapists share their sadness about their current relationships with former step-parents and reflect on how these relationships shaped their childhood.

On this episode of Therapy Rebranded, we explore a new format by diving into three Reddit stories.

We start with a post from the "Insane Parents" community, where a mother shames her 20-year-old daughter for using birth control, questioning its necessity without a boyfriend. This sparks a discussion about parental boundaries and the reactions stemming from fear and shame.

Next, we review a screenshot from the height of COVID-19, where a mom blames the pandemic on her daughter for spending too much time outside the house. We humorously debunk the idea that a worldwide pandemic could be a punishment for a social teenager, leading to a deeper conversation about parental control and adolescent independence.

We then move to a troubling Reddit post about a childcare worker who made a CPS report with substantial evidence, only to be scolded by her boss and the CPS worker. This opens up a difficult discussion on child abuse, the effectiveness of child protective services, and the importance of educating children about safety.

Lastly, we tackle a heartbreaking story from a 17-year-old who discovered through a DNA test that he is not his biological father's son. The revelation, which exposed him as the product of an affair, led to his father shunning him, leaving the son devastated and confused. We delve into the emotional complexities and impact of such family secrets.

Join us for this episode as we navigate these complex and emotional stories.

In this episode, we start by addressing a listener's dilemma: "Am I the asshole for leaving after my girlfriend gave birth to our disabled child?" We then explore how a Redditor is repeating family patterns, shedding light on how past family dynamics can influence current behavior.
Next, we dive back into the AITA discussion, followed by a unique situation where a foster mother is breastfeeding a listener's baby – is this legal, and what can the biological mother do?
We then tackle a listener's concern about her husband's secrecy involving a strange woman he and their child talked with. Shifting gears, we examine the budget conflicts within the Anoka Hennepin County School Board spelled out clearly by a list of Matt Audette’s demands. Should she really be this shocked? Next, a husband expects his wife to do all his laundry—does that *ever* fly? Spoiler: it doesn’t.
