What's happening in Belarus?
The Young Fabians Podcast
08/31/20 • 57 min
The president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, is often been referred to as Europe's last dictator. But could this all be about to change? Earlier this month, Belarus held a presidential election which it was announced that Lukashenko, who has ruled the nation undemocratically since 1994, had once again won with a huge majority. From then until now, Belarusians have taken to the streets in their masses through protests, rallies and worker strikes, on an unprecedented scale, calling for Lukashenko's resignation.
In today's episode, I'm joined by Nelly Bekus, Associate Lecturer at the University of Exeter, Ihar Barysau, the Chair of the Belarus Social Democratic Party (Hramada), and Ido Vock, International Correspondent at the New Statesman, to get more of an insight into the situation.

Cummings-gate, Covid-19, Brexit + How Labour should respond
The Young Fabians Podcast
05/29/20 • 67 min
Podcast regulars Carolina Saludes, Redha Rubaie and Mark McVitie are joined by political and public policy strategist Kendall Aitcliffe to break down the Dominic Cummings scandal that gripped the UK last weekend. Will Boris Johnson be able to shake off the bad publicity from Dom’s behaviour? Can the Government be taken seriously after its most senior advisor ignored the rules to travel half way round the country with Covid? Will we ever be able to look at Barnard Castle without mentioning Spec Savers?
We also discuss Labour’s response to the scandal, more widely to the Covid-19 crisis, the appointment of David Evans as new General Secretary, and how they have to position themselves to win.
This episode was recorded Thursday 28th May, before further allegations from the police about whether Cummings’ conduct broke lockdown rules. The plot thickens...

Leadership Election Part 2: the less sober bit + Announcement!
The Young Fabians Podcast
02/19/20 • 86 min
The team are back for part 2 of the leadership election series, this time ... a little less sober than last. Again, please forgive our ramblings, they usually have a point at the end of them. In this second episode we discuss the leadership candidates and their messaging, and the usual serving of red hot takes. There’s also a special announcement, so make sure you tune in!
In the episode are Redha Rubaie, Victoria Parrett, Carolina Saludes, Mark McVitie (for part of it) and Alex McIntyre, channelling Laura, Katya et al at Brexit(News)cast. By interrupting each other a lot.
Please note this episode was recorded on Friday 24th January, so we’ll have missed Emily Thornberry dropping out of the race, the Channel 4 hustings, the JLM hustings, and all the other (quite uneventful) debates in between.
Enjoy!

Leadership Election Part 1: the sober bit
The Young Fabians Podcast
02/10/20 • 52 min
The team get together to record not one, but TWO episodes about the leadership election. We also unwisely decided to make it into a Friday, ‘let’s have a tipple’ recording, so please forgive our self-indulgent ramblings. In this first half we discuss the deputy leadership election, a lot of polls, and some piping hot takes.
In the episode are Redha Rubaie, Victoria Parrett, Carolina Saludes, Mark McVitie and Alex McIntyre, channelling Laura, Katya et al at Brexit(News)cast. By interrupting each other a lot.
This episode was recorded on Friday 24th January in London. There's swearing. A lot of it.

Democratic US Primary Special: Biden puns and Bernie followers
The Young Fabians Podcast
03/06/20 • 85 min
The world is going to hell in a handcart, but in the middle of that a bunch of democrat politicians in the US are fighting for control of the steering wheel. The team discuss in detail how Joe Biden or Bernie Sanders could win or lose the nomination, what happened to Warren, where did Bloomberg’s millions in ads go, and why Pete can’t use his McKinsey slides to win elections. Joining us are Redha Rubaie, Carolina Saludes, Gregory Gillette, Nick Trickett, Hunter Christopher (a volunteer in the Sanders campaign), Jesse Coleman and Kyalo Burt-Fulcher. It’s packed full of nerdy detail and high level explanations of the race, so whether you’re new or a seasoned follower of American elections, this one’s well worth listening to.

This episode was recorded on Wednesday 4th March in London (Warren had not dropped out quite yet).

The North-South Divide
The Young Fabians Podcast
10/30/20 • 37 min
The North of England has been disproportionately affected by the Coronavirus crisis. Having the highest amount of cases and deaths in the country has led to strict lockdown restrictions for months on end, understandably causing tensions in the North to grow. However, last week another sharp blow was delivered by the government to Andy Burnham and the people of Greater Manchester through an insufficient amount of funding to support the area and reverse the damage that Tier 3 will bring to the area.
It's worth remembering that Boris Johnson, in his first speech as Prime Minister, made clear that he would not take the support from the 'red wall' for granted and expressed his intent to 'level up' the North, but so far it's been quite the opposite, with more attention and support being afforded to London and parts of the North feeling dejected and forgotten.
The North-South divide is a very real thing which more than ever represents deep inequality and growing disillusionment - with the Covid crisis exposing the many gaps between the two sides of England.
This week I'm joined by three fellow Young Fabians: Donya Jeyabalasingham, Amy Dwyer and Tom Laing for a chat about all of these different factors behind the exacerbation of the North-South Divide in recent months.

Spring Budget Special + Kyalo goes crazy with the Pensions taper
The Young Fabians Podcast
03/12/20 • 80 min
Rishi Sunak had his maiden budget speech yesterday, and of course we had to get together and do some appropriately Fabian analysis on it. Led by YF and economist Jeevun Sandher and Pensions Actuary Kyalo Burt-Fulcher, they discussed the headline spend pledges, measures to fight Covid-19, some of Dominic Cummings’pet projects (Maths Academies anyone?) and what it all means in the current political climate. Plus that Corbyn speech. They’re joined by producer Carolina Saludes, and YF and musician Tom Platter.
Please do tune in whatever your prior knowledge, we ai to make it understandable and inclusive for all. To all our female listeners: we want you in our podcast, so if you’re passionate about a topic just get in touch with us at [email protected]. We want to hear from you.
This episode was recorded on Wednesday 11th March in London, the evening of the budget. Anything new that came after that we were oblivious to
