Hair-Raising Fun with with Teen Author, Sophia Namazy, and Mom, Jennifer Namazy
The Writer’s Parachute
02/20/24 • 35 min
Every child knows the tickle of a fairy's wing or the tug of a stubborn ponytail, but what happens when these everyday moments transform into tales of empathy and courage? Join me as I sit down with the inspiring mother-daughter team, Jennifer and Sophia Namazy, to unravel their whimsical world in "Pigtails, Ponytails, and Fairy Tales." Their latest adventure, "Hair Emergency," doesn't just entertain with mishaps and fairy magic—it's a heartfelt call to action against bullying, a celebration of friendships, and a guide to moral choices that resonate with our youngest generation. And there's a bonus—a portion of their book's proceeds helps in the fight against Schwachmann Diamond Syndrome, proving that these stories truly have the power to change lives beyond the page.
As we pull back the curtain on the Namazy's creative process, we're reminded that every author's journey begins with a single word and a leap of faith. Sophia, a teen author herself, shares her invaluable insights for budding writers, lighting the way for others to follow in her literary footsteps. There's something magical about a young voice echoing through the chapters of a book, especially when it's emboldened by the support of programs like 826 National and 916 Ink. So, if you're looking to remember the spark that stories ignited in your childhood or seeking to fan the flames of a young writer's dreams, this conversation with Jennifer and Sophia Namazy is a treasure trove of motivation, laughter, and a little sprinkle of fairy dust.

A Magical Cure for Fear with Glenda Tinsley
The Writer’s Parachute
08/08/23 • 46 min
Ever wanted to peek into the creative mind of a children's author? Strap in as we bring you face-to-face with the delightful and talented Glenda Tinsley, who turned her daughters' fear of having their own bedrooms into the charming tale, Periwinkle's Magic. Glenda's creative process becomes as magical as the story she weaves, providing lessons for parents and children alike.
Have you ever thought about the monumental journey of a book coming to life? Together with Glenda, we unravel the intricate threads of the publishing world. From scouting for an illustrator to the delicate art of crediting editors, every step is critical. We'll guide you through the highs of holding your first published book and how to celebrate this milestone, and even the practicalities of registering with the Library of Congress.
But, it's not all about the technicalities. At the heart of writing are the writers themselves. In a world that often overwhelms with self-doubt and internal criticism, we shed light on the importance of self-compassion and gratitude. We seek wisdom from Glenda on handling the emotional rollercoaster that is being an author and talk about how platforms like Shut Up and Write could be the fuel to your writing dreams. Join us, as we uncover the magic not just in Glenda's book but the magical journey of writing itself.
Children’s Author, Writer, Improv Artist, Glenda Tinsley
As a child Glenda felt shy. Looking out her window to neighbors and passerby, she would make up stories about them. Hiding a flashlight under her bed for emergencies, Glenda used it to read her favorite books, sitting up in bed with the blankets pulled over her head, she pretended to be in a tent. Her first book, part of a series, "Periwinkle's Magic", is inspired by a bedtime story she created -about adventures with Periwinkle, a magical gnome, and Mac the McCaw, a parrot-that she would tell her daughters. Her oldest daughter; Emily, would add little tidbits to the stories.Giggling with Glenda, her kids and grandkids laughed out loud whenever she shared these stories. Glenda's message is a reminder to children that using imagination throughout reading helps you get through things, enjoy life, and believe that anything is possible.Ms. Tinsley lives in Sacramento, with her husband, near green-belt areas and a lake-with ducks, fish, frogs, geese and turtles.
