Interview with New York Times Bestseller Kayla Cottingham, Author of This Delicious Death
The Wrath of the iOtians
04/25/23 • 42 min
Jake and Ron are so thrilled to have New York Times bestselling author Kayla Cottingham on the Wrath of the iOtians! Her first book, My Dearest Darkest , became a New York Times and Publisher's Weekly bestseller. Her latest, This Delicious Death (Sourcebooks Fire) is a story about four best friends with a hunger for human flesh attend a music festival in the desert they discover a murderous plot to expose and vilify the girls and everyone like them.
Two years ago, a small percentage of population underwent a transformation known as the Hollowing. Those affected were only able to survive by consuming human flesh. The people who went without quickly became feral, turning on their friends and family. Luckily, scientists were able to create a synthetic version of human meat that would satisfy their hunger. As a result, humanity slowly began to return to normal.
Cut to Zoey, Celeste, Valeria, and Jasmine, four hollow girls living in Southern California. As a last hurrah before graduation they decide to attend a musical festival in the heart of the desert. They have a cooler filled with seltzer, vodka, and Synflesh... and are ready to party.
But on the first night of the festival Val goes feral and ends up killing and eating a boy in one of the bands. As other festival guests start disappearing around them the girls soon discover someone is targeting people like them. And if they can't figure out how to stop it, and soon, no one at the festival is getting out alive.
It was so much fun chatting with Kayla, and we are inspired by her! The future of horror is in good hands.

Interview with Pura Belpré Award Winner and Bram Stoker Nominee Vincent Tirado, Author of We Don't Swim Here
The Wrath of the iOtians
07/31/23 • 34 min
Jake and Ron welcome Pura Belpré Award Winner and Bram Stoker Nominee Vincent Tirado, author of the fantastic horror novel We Don't Swim Here !
Bronwyn is only supposed to be in rural Hillwoods for a year. Her grandmother is in hospice, and her father needs to get her affairs in order. And they're all meant to make some final memories together.
Except Bronwyn is miserable. Her grandmother is dying, everyone is standoffish, and she can't even go swimming. All she hears are warnings about going in the water, despite a gorgeous lake. And a pool at the abandoned rec center. And another in the high school basement.
Anais tries her hardest to protect Bronwyn from the shadows of Hillwoods. She follows her own rituals to avoid any unnecessary attention—and if she can just get Bronwyn to stop asking questions, she can protect her too. The less Bronwyn pays attention to Hillwoods, the less Hillwoods will pay attention to Bronwyn. She doesn't get that the lore is, well, truth. History. Pain. The living aren't the only ones who seek retribution when they're wronged. But when Bronwyn does more exploring than she should, they are both in for danger they couldn't expect.

Interview with New York Times Bestseller Christopher Paolini, Author of Fractal Noise (The Fractalverse Series)
The Wrath of the iOtians
05/12/23 • 54 min
Jake and Ron welcome legendary author Christopher Paolini!
Even if you don't read genre fiction, you're likely to remember the story of the young man who at the age of nineteen became a New York Times bestselling author when his first book Eragonwas republished by Knopf in 2003, after a self-published debut and a grassroots marketing campaign the previous year. Paolini would go on to produce three more novels and a short story collection tied to his Inheritance Cycle, with another, Murtagh, due this coming November.
Since 2002, Paolini has enthralled tens of millions of readers. And while the Inheritance Cycle is published as Young Adult fiction by Knopf, it is enjoyed by readers of all ages. This rabid fan base has earned him a citation in the Guinness Book of World Records as the youngest author of a bestselling series.
In 2020 Tor published Paolini's first science fiction novel, To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, launching the Fractalverse series to much critical acclaim, including a GoodRead's Best Science Fiction Award for the year. A follow-up was published online in 2021 as Unity , and you can read it on fractal verse.net free of charge. The journey is interactive in a mode old people like us used to call hyper-fiction.
Not content with publishing one novel in 2023, Paolini this month brings us Fractal Noise , a prequel novel written for adults that we dare say is of a philosophical bent. We mean this as the highest praise: Fractal Noise is thoughtful and thought-provoking, exploring themes of the nature of human suffering and its possible antidotes, loss and grief, and human endurance. That it does so with a gripping narrative suffused with an abiding sense of dread is a testament to Paolini's ever-growing skills as an author, and Fractal Noise is amongst our favorite novels of the iOtians's current interview season. We spoke with Paolini at his home in Montana and found him to be no less fascinating in person than he is on the page.

Interview with Leopoldo Gout Author of Piñata
The Wrath of the iOtians
08/28/23 • 65 min
I had a wonderful time chatting with Leopoldo Gout!
Leopoldo has written several books, including Ghost Radio . Check out the audiobook. It's actually narrated by Pedro Pascal of The Last of Us and The Mandalorian !
His latest horror novel, Piñata , published by Tor Nightfire and is now avaialable on audiobook, e-book, hardcover and paperback.
It's the tale of a young family that went to Mexico to connect to their culture, history and roots. Upon their return to New York, they discover that something unexplainable and possibly sinister has followed them back.
Leopoldo is also an accomplished artist and sculptor creating wonderful works out of his studio in New York.
He loves music. He's friends with David Byrne, produced music videos and created album covers for Mos Def. He's friends with Carlos Santana and was the executive producer for an acclaimed documentary about him.
He is also accomplished in film and television. He was the executive producer for Molly's Game starring Jessica Chastain. He's the executive producer of the current top streaming show on Netflix, the critically acclaimed The Chosen One .
By the way, his brother, Everado Gout, is an accomplished director in his own right.
He directed episodes of Luke Cage, The Terror and Snowpiercer. He also directed Kaleidoscope and the aforementioned The Chosen One , both on Netflix.
He even directed the movie The Forever Purge .
With all of Leopoldo's accomplishments the four things that made the biggest impression on me are his love for creativity, his natural curiosity about others, his love of his family and his generosity. He's so generous he chatted with me while he was on vacation!

It was supposed to be the perfect summer.
Carmen Sanchez is back in Mexico, supervising the renovation of an ancient abbey. Her daughters Izel and Luna, too young to be left alone in New York, join her in what Carmen hopes is a chance for them to connect with their roots.
Then, an accident at the worksite unearths a stash of rare, centuries-old artifacts. The disaster costs Carmen her job, cutting the family trip short.
But something malevolent and unexplainable follows them home to New York, stalking the Sanchez family and heralding a coming catastrophe. And it may already be too late to escape what’s been awakened...
They were worshiped by our ancestors.
Now they are forgotten.
Soon, they’ll make us remember.
