Hey there, hero!
First, if you use Windows, you can safely ignore this podcast and continue to use The Levelator on your computer. This is super awesome for Mac users only. But...
If you're an audiobook narrator, or a podcaster, or anyone who needs compressed, limited processing of your sound, here's some great news:
The Levelator, previously only available as a 32-bit (read: old) application for Mac, is now available in the Mac App Store, updated to work with Catalina, the latest MacOS (and older MacOSes as well.), and I demonstrate installing it and using it in this episode.
Huzzah!! With Audacity and The Levelator both working on Catalina, I can officially say that our production stack is now usable on the latest Mac models!
I'd give it a few weeks to see if there are any last minute issues, but we're over the proverbial hump.
But...what of AudioCupcake? Is it still worth it for us to continue to develop it? Is it worth $20 for you to have a one-step drag and drop solution that outputs a file ready to upload to ACX or your podcast host without having to manually bring it back into Audacity, peak normalize it and export to MP3?
Let me know in the comments below, and do be honest - if it's not, tell me. If it is, I'd love to know your thoughts.

Hey there, hero!
As I say at the outset of this episode, I really need your help.
I've been getting tons of fearful messages from VO talent. From clients, students, and strangers out of nowhere. Confusion and fear runs throughout these emails from these lovely, struggling artists.
All asking about the surprising standards they are being asked to meet by agents and casting offices regarding their home studios.
I don't want to upset anyone, but it's really bothering me. The help I need from you is how to express this concern to the gatekeepers of our livelihoods...the people who control at least a portion of our income.
PLEASE give me your thoughts on this in the comments below.

The VOHeroes Podcast - 13179: See How Easy It Is To Create A Scam Project On ACX
play

05/14/24 • 4 min

Hey there, hero!
Our NarrateYourOwnBook.com training course, designed for authors who want to be the voice of their own books, has a lesson in it that shows them how to "claim their title" from Kindle and start the process of producing the audiobook version of their book on ACX.
You'd think you'd need some sort of permission to claim a title, but you'd be wrong.
In this episode we discuss how easy it is for scammers to create ACX projects from any title that has yet to be claimed, leaving us in the position of being taken advantage of.
As a narrator, you'll want to watch this, and then be extra vigilant when someone contacts you out of the blue on ACX to narrate their book. And if you're an author, you'll want to watch for your title being claimed without your permission.
Could it be any easier? Thoughts on this? Let me know in the comments below.

Hey there, hero!
It's easy to get into a rut. You get used to doing something, you're not challenged any longer, and it starts feeling monotonous.
Even if your goal was to create a reliable ritual. It just gets old. You get stuck.
Then Ajarae Coleman jumped in with a new concept.
You try to shake things up, and strike out for something more challenging. Something new.
And it doesn't quite work out.
The feelings you have when you try something, fail at it, and reflect on the process can range from the thought that you learned something to "meh" to disappointment to outright sadness to..."goal trauma."
(Yeah, I didn't know what that meant either, until I used the google to find out what Ajarae was on about.)
Please discuss, once you've watched the episode. What's your go-to reaction when you try something and fail? Let me know in the comments below.

Hey there, hero!
We are often so hell-bent to move forward and create new opportunities, possibilities, creations, products, paths and more, that we sometimes forget what we've already created for ourselves in the past.
And when we let these creations slip our minds, we narrow the chances of being able to apply those finished products we have in our creative inventories to our current needs.
It's worth going through our storage systems every so often and reviewing what we've actually done already, and remind ourselves just how vast our inventory of accomplishments actually are. I'll show you how in this video.
Ever pull something out of your past and use it for a current project? Or maybe realized after the fact that you could have used a character you created a while back? Let me know in the comments below.

Hey there, hero!
We get comfy when we have a pattern to look at: we create a life for ourselves, we get into a habit, we get systems in place and we think that's it.
It's never going to change. What we have now is what we will always have, good and bad.
But is that really true?
Does what we have now somehow predict what we'll have in the future? Is what we have now all we can expect for the future?
Absolutely not. Think about the completely random nature of our business. And how we are training to get better, working on new things.
I'm in the midst of a project right now that I didn't see coming.
And that can happen to you...at any crazy moment.

The VOHeroes Podcast - 13122: Are You (Sometimes) Out Of Order? Let's Fix That
play

03/14/23 • 5 min

Hey there, hero!
I've observed people quickly search for an answer to a problem, find some information, and because time is (almost always) of the essence...
...jump right in to "fixing" the problem. But it doesn't get fixed, and they don't know why. We all want to be efficient with our problem solving, but there's a crucial component to "efficient": your step-by-step use of that solution's info.
In many cases, the information is great. The problem is the order of execution. Let's take the example of Jess, who wrote me about a problem they couldn't quite solve, even though they had all the information they needed.
It was their order of execution.
Once you've listened to this episode, would you please take a moment and share with me a moment that you got ahead of yourself? Let me know in the comments below.

Hey there, hero!
As a Macintosh user, I know exactly what software to use to back up my data and keep myself safe: Time Machine. It's built in to MacOS, and is awesome. Reliable, automatic, elegant.
But when a client or student asks me for the equivalent of that awesomeness for Windows, I have to ask my friend, my go-to Windows expert: Leo Notenboom, at askleo.com.
I get my chance on Zoom recently, and I had the wisdom to record it for you. If you use Windows and you want to professionally protect your livelihood, Leo's your guy. Watch this video and use the software he says to use.
It will simply and elegantly keep your stuff safe.
He's even got a very low-cost course you can take (less than 60 bucks for anyone, and 30% off that if you use the coupon code HERO at the link below, making it just $42. Well worth it.)

The VOHeroes Podcast - 0049: How To Simplify Your Writing The Amazon Way
play

01/04/22 • 5 min

Hey there, hero!
I love finding examples of world-class systems of communication, and I found an article that looks at how Amazon teams communicate with each other when creating written documents:
https://bettermarketing.pub/what-writers-can-learn-from-amazons-famous-6-page-memo-de7351e5f771
In it, Sinem Günel shows us a number of ways that Amazon is atypical in their approach to written communication, and what they do to be efficient in meetings.
It starts with simplifying their language, and we look at some prime examples in the podcast.
You know, Amazon Prime examples. See what I did there?
After you listen to the podcast, do you have any examples of simplification that you're a stickler about? Anything that people write that sticks in your craw? Let me know in the comments below.

The VOHeroes Podcast - 13212: Deal With Criticism Just Like Joe
play

12/31/24 • 6 min

Hey there, hero!
Putting your creations out there for the world to see can feel like an act of bravery, and some people get ready for a bit of criticism.
And they might be looking for a way to deal with that criticism.
I say, be like Joe.
Joseph Brodsky the writer/poet, that is.
After a recent video I released was posted about creating my Narrate Your Own Book course, I got an odd response from a listener about how everything I teach...can be found, for free, on YouTube.
How I reacted (or didn't react) to that was pure Joe. And I thought maybe it would be useful to you, too.
How do you react to criticism of your work from friends, family, casting, unknown audience members, readers, editors etc? Is it painful or easy? Or something in-between? Let me know in the comments below.
