E25 - Interview - Anik - Do Re Mi Bracelets etc - Jewelry made from Upcycled instruments strings
The UpCycle Canada Podcast: Your Eco-Friendly Inspiration
04/20/22 • 61 min
EPISODE 25
Hi! I'm Anik, the artist and owner behind Do Re Mi Bracelets etc. located in Gatineau QC, Canada.
My passion is reclaiming discarded instrument strings (guitar, piano, violin, etc.) and upcycling them into beautiful jewelry and gifts.
I am a woman, an LGBTQ ally, the wife of a Metis man, a French Canadian and more!
Core values for me in my business are respect, authenticity, inclusiveness and working in as eco-friendly a way as I can.
I don't know if you're a musician like me, but one thing I know for sure is that you know a musician or two .
Everyone knows a musician!!
When you start to think about how many varieties of stringed instruments that exist in the world, you can only imagine the TONS of waste created in landfills when the broken and discarded strings are thrown away. That's where I saw an opportunity to do my part in helping Mother Nature, one string at a time.
But as someone who likes to think outside the box, making the same boring thing, is not my style. I love making unique and creative designs. But if, like me, attention to detail is important to you, in my shop you will find a REFINED TAKE ON RECLAIMED.
Do you have a guitar pick from your favourite musician? Do you have strings from your son, mother, partner, or husband's musical instrument? Do you have a special musician who passed away? I can create a keepsake item that is truly personal by using their strings or parts of their instrument. I will treat all the materials received, with extreme respect in the creation of this special item.
Having the opportunity to hear the stories from my customers. Hearing about the music and the musicians who touched their lives is a true pleasure. Being able to honour those memories is a privilege.
I would love to have the opportunity to work with you and to create something that helps connect you to the music and the memories that you cherish.

Join the Club!
Toy Exchange Club is reducing the need for toy ownership.
We ensure children have access to the right toys at the right time to support their development. Once they outgrow the rental toys, they can be used by another family. This sharing economy approach reduces waste in these key areas:
- Materials and resources used to manufacture new wooden toys
- Packaging materials
- Carbon emissions (by keeping shipping local)
- Non-recyclable plastic toys
We also try to:
- Source educational toys made of natural materials and non-toxic paints
- Use waste-free packaging, including locally-made upcycled cloth bags
- Re-purpose returned shipping boxes and Kraft paper through local businesses
- Use Canadian and American-made eco-friendly cleaning products on our wooden toys
Why Rent Toys?
Receive 7-8 educational toys every 3 months
- Avoid toy clutter in your home
- Save $400 per year by renting
- Get expert-backed wooden toys to support learning & development
- Keep outgrown toys out of the landfill
- No charge for occasional lost or broken pieces
We believe that childhood play should have a positive impact on both our children’s future and the planet’s.

E29 - Earth Day Focus - The History of Earth Day, When Did It Start and Why It Is Important
The UpCycle Canada Podcast: Your Eco-Friendly Inspiration
08/01/22 • 7 min
Episode 3 - The History of Earth Day
Our planet is an amazing place, but it needs our help to thrive! That’s why each year on April 22, more than a billion people celebrate Earth Day to protect the planet from things like pollution and deforestation. By taking part in activities like picking up litter and planting trees, we’re making our world a happier, healthier place to live.
The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, when a United States senator from Wisconsin organized a national demonstration to raise awareness about environmental issues. Rallies took place across the country and, by the end of the year, the U.S. government had created the Environmental Protection Agency. By 1990, Earth Day was an event celebrated by more than 140 countries around the globe.
You can celebrate and protect the planet at the same time. Check out these Earth Day ideas to help save the planet any time of year.
BE A PLANET HERO!
• In its lifetime, one reusable bag can prevent the use of 600 plastic bags.
• Recycling one can of soda will save enough energy to power a tv for three hours.
• Shutting down a computer when it's not in use cuts the energy consumption by 85 percent.
• For every mile walked instead of driven, nearly one pound of pollution is kept out of the air.

E33 - Funky Upbeat Designs with Paige - UpCycled Musical instruments
The UpCycle Canada Podcast: Your Eco-Friendly Inspiration
06/15/22 • 47 min
EPISODE 33 - Let's Get Funky!
Dave, Jen and Paige join in with two of the most special and fun people ever! Darren & Leigh from Funky Upbeat Designs! Darren and Leigh are two of the most giving, kind and truly great people we have come across - we are honoured to have their products available in our store, we are thrilled to know them as friends - enjoy the story behind their amazing business salvaging musical instruments and how they turn waste into a super successful and profitable business! You will fall in love with them - join Team Funky right here on The UpCycle Canada Podcast!Welcome To Funky Upbeat Designs!
We drum to a different beat and are doing things a little different over here! We are a proudly Canadian husband and wife team (Darren & Leigh) based in Markham, Ontario creating one of a kind furniture, upcycled instrument art and unique home and musical décor made from repurposed musical instruments, inspired by the love of drums.
Funky Upbeat Designs started back in August 2018 and the idea came to us literally out of the blue. We purchased one drum kit, did several modifications, posted them to social media, asked opinions of family and friends and the response and feedback was unbelievable! At that point, we knew we were on to something...Funky Upbeat Designs was born and has turned out to be more than we ever anticipated, in the best possible way! We are so grateful for your ongoing support and love for our local, family business.
Each design created is completely transformed and repurposed by us in our workshop in Markham, Ontario. We take the utmost pride in every drum or guitar design we make from it’s original, previously loved and often damaged and abused condition to completely transforming and repurposing it into a work of art. We aim to use reclaimed, upcycled and eco-friendly, Canadian made materials where possible in all of our designs. We are always adding to our product line, coming up with new, creative ideas and do not mass produce any of our pieces. Every design created is unique, high quality, handmade and one of a kind.
We ship to Canada & USA and custom orders and designs are welcome- whether you are looking for a personalized gift, a one of a kind décor piece, a meaningful keepsake or even have old drums or a guitar to get rid of- we are always available, here to help and look forward to hearing from you.
Cheers & One Love,
Darren & Leigh
