The Unfolding Enneagram

This beautiful quote from the book, Pillow Thoughts II, by Courtney Peppernell, sums up what this episode is about.

"You can't skip chapters, that's not how life works. You have to read every line, meet every character. You won't enjoy all of it. Hell, some chapters will make you cry for weeks. You will read things you do't want to read, you will have moments when you don't want the pages to end. But you have to keep going. Stories keep the world revolving. Live yours, don't miss out."

In a time of short cuts, predictive text and life hacks we can totally miss the beauty of true connection. Like J.R.R. Tolkien says, "Short cuts make long delays."

What’s your number? Do you know you dominant wing? What about Instinct? Are you Social, Sexual, or Self Preservation? Arrows of integration and disintegration? What’s your stance? Aggressive, Dependent or Withdrawing? Hornevian triads...Harmonics. It can seem overwhelming when you set out to learn something new. But what if you knew just ONE thing could set you on a course that would change your life for the better? Maybe that's enough to make all the difference in a troubled relationship. Maybe that one new insight opened your heart to a love that can now blossom and grow. What if that one change of heart broke down a barrier that kept you in bondage? What if one act of surrender set you free?

The Enneagram Journey of Learning and Losing

"The more you wake up to who you are, the more unbearable it becomes to be who you are NOT.”

This was the summer of moving for our family as four family units relocated. Some had outgrown their houses, some were moving to where their careers took them and our parents moved from a big two story house to an Assisted living facility with amenities designed for senior living. But what each move had in common was the fact that where they had been living no longer 'fit' their lifestyles.

Sometimes we are forced to make a change because something doesn't fit...like an old pair of jeans, a relationship or a belief system. But what happens when we keep trying to squeeze into those tight jeans or exist in a space that simply doesn’t fit any longer? Like trying to put new wine in old wineskins (or new wine in a Clorox bottle like my college dorm mate did!)...eventually it's going to blow!

But those that require us to change thinking bring about the strongest resistance.

We have no problem saying “I used to believe there was an actual tooth fairy but I no longer believe that.” Our thinking about the tooth fairy, or what is called "the magic/mythic age of a child”, doesn’t FIT with our evolved consciousness at some point.

But once we cross over into adulthood the EGO is fully at play. So we become attached to our thoughts and will DEFEND them even when they don’t FIT any more. Until the point they become totally unworkable and you cannot squeeze them into your lifestyle. At that point you will encounter resistance - first in your own mind!

Like Lao Tzu says in The Tao te Ching, “If you realize that all things change, there is nothing you will try to hold on to."
