The Ugandan Podcast - A Summit January in Uganda- Amb. Adonia Ayebare
play

01/16/24 • 17 min

Permanent Representative of Uganda to the UN, Ambassador Adonia Ayebare joins Azeirwe Brandy Valentine on #TheUgandanPodcast to shine more light on the 19th NAM Summit & the Third South Summit that are happening right here in The Pearl of Africa this January!

The Government of the Republic of Uganda wishes to update the general public on the status of its preparedness to host the upcoming 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and Group of 77 (G77) + China Summits, due to be held at Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort, Kampala, Uganda from 15th to 20th January 2024 and 21st to 23rd January 2024 respectively.

These events will bring together leaders from around the world to address pressing global issues and foster cooperation among nations. NON-ALIGNED MOVEMENT (NAM): The Non-Aligned Movement is a forum of 120 developing countries that advocate for peace, security, and development. It was founded in 1961 and aims to promote cooperation among nations, independent of major power blocs.

GROUP OF 77 (G77) PLUS CHINA: The Group of 77 is a coalition of developing nations, established in 1964 that focuses on economic cooperation and sustainable development. It aims to promote the collective interests of its member countries and enhance their negotiating capacity in international forums.

China, as a major global power, plays a significant role in international affairs. Its partnership with the NAM and G77 strengthens cooperation among developing nations and contributes to global stability and development.

The theme of the summits, NAM is “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence," and G77 + China is “Living No One Behind” which resonates strongly with our collective aspirations for a better future.

As part of preparations to host the two Summits, the government is on course to repair the roads that will be used during the Summits, the Convention center at Munyonyo is on course to be completed in time, maintenance works at the airport is complete, Uganda Police has put in place a traffic plan and the hotels to accommodate the guests have been inspected, the protocol officers have been trained amongst others. The government is therefore well prepared to host these two Summits.

The 19th NAM and G77+China Summits will serve as a platform for leaders to discuss and address critical challenges facing the international community. Key topics on the agenda include climate change, poverty eradication, sustainable development, peacekeeping, and global economic stability. The two summits will provide an opportunity for nations to exchange ideas, share best practices, and forge partnerships to tackle these pressing issues collectively. Uganda, known for its rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality, is honored to host these prestigious summits. The Country's strategic location in the heart of Africa makes it an ideal venue for fostering dialogue and cooperation among Nations. This is to inform the general public that the Government of Uganda is working tirelessly to ensure the success of these two summits.
