In this one I tell the stories of Supreme, of Kanye West's relationship with the luxury fashion industry (which, again, may be key to understanding elements of Donda), of his longtime collaborator Virgil Abloh, and of Travis Scott's entrance into these commercial markets. We cover drop culture, cop culture, and the ways in which Travis has employed these phenomena to his own artistic and financial ends. Basically all this is necessary to understand the hype around McDonalds merch drop, and to see how major artists and major brands have really started to blend over the past decades.

Here in episode 3 (the center of this series), I finally dig into the actual McDonalds promotion, unpacking the constellation of projects, drops, and public events Travis Scott packed into the 28 days from Sept 4 to Oct 8, 2020. Through the burger promotion, I explore broader questions of what it means to "sell out" in modern American culture, and how fans generally react when major artists work with major brands.
