May 26, 1986. Frobisher Bay, Northwest Territories. After returning home from a trip, the sister of 15-year old Mary Ann Birmingham enters their residence and discovers that Mary Ann has been stabbed to death. Months later, a local resident named Jopie Atsiqtaq pops up on the radar as a potential suspect after he is charged with the similar stabbing deaths of two other victims. Even though Atsiqtaq is initially charged with killing Mary Ann, he denies any involvement and since the evidence is deemed insufficient for him to stand trial, the crime is never solved. Mary Ann Birmingham’s murder is just the first case we’ll be covering on this week’s special episode of “The Trail Went Cold” about missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls from Northern Canada. In total, we’ll be exploring nine unsolved cold cases involving Indigenous female victims which took place in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. The nine victims are 15-year old Ann Birmingham, 38-year old Tabitha Kalluk, 46-year old Della “Jochebed” Ootoova, 18-year old Leona Brule, 15-year old Charlene Catholique, 24-year old Mary Rose Keadjuk, 17-year old Mariella Lennie, 39-year old Dorothy Abel and 22-year old Angela Meyer.

If you have information about the murder of Mary Ann Birmingham, please contact the Iqaluit detachment of the RCMP at (867) 979-0123. If you have information about any of the other featured cases from the Northwest Territories, please contact their RCMP’s Historical Case Unit at (867) 669-1111. The Trail Went Cold - The Trail Went Cold - Episode 291 - Margie Dabney
play

08/24/22 • 38 min

December 5, 2001. Dallas, Texas. After boarding a flight from Indianapolis to Los Angeles, 70-year old Marjorie “Margie” Dabney and her husband stop for a layover at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Before they can make their connecting flight, Margie winds up disappearing and since she suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, there is fear that she might have become confused and wandered outside the airport. Nearly seven years later, skeletal remains found in a wooded area 15 miles away are positively identified as belonging to Margie. Since her cause of death is determined to be blunt force trauma, Margie’s case is ruled to be a homicide. But did how Margie go missing to begin with and what could the motive have been for her murder? On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we chronicle an incredibly sad, but bizarre cold case in which a victim somehow managed to go missing from an airport. In addition, we’ll also be discussing the unsolved disappearance of 14-year old Charlotte Loomis, who vanished from Newark International Airport in September 1972.

If you have any information about the death of Margie Dabney, please contact the Lewisville Police Department at (972) 219-3640 or the Denton County Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-800-388-TIPS (8477). If you have any information about the disappearance of Charlotte Loomis, please contact the Eatontown Police Department at (732) 389-7649.

October 1, 2003. Naples, Florida. A Mexican national named Felipe Santos gets into a minor traffic accident and mysteriously disappears after being taken into custody by the police. Three months later, another Naples man named Terrance Williams also vanishes without explanation after being pulled over for a routine traffic stop. What makes this story so unusual is that both men were last seen being taken into custody by the same police officer: Corporal Steve Calkins. Was this all just a very bizarre coincidence or was Calkins responsible for the disappearance of both men? Join me for a new episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, as I examine one of the most controversial missing persons cases of recent memory.

March 27, 2004. London, England. 50-year old Richard Lancelyn Green, considered to be the world’s foremost scholar on Sherlock Holmes, is discovered dead on top of his bed inside his flat. His cause of death is determined to be asphyxiation, as he was garrotted with a shoelace which was tightened around his neck with a wooden spoon. Prior to his death, Lancelyn Green told people his life was in danger over a dispute involving a collection of rare documents from author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but since there is no definitive evidence pointing towards homicide or suicide, the coroner returns an open verdict on his death. Was Richard Lancelyn Green the victim of foul play or did he intentionally stage a very unusual and elaborate suicide? On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the unexplained death of a Sherlock Holmes expert which resembles a scene from a fictional murder mystery.

December 12, 1992. Charles Mix County, South Dakota. After an all-night partying spree, 20-year old Arnold Archambeau, Arnold’s 18-year old spouse, Ruby Bruguier, and Ruby’s 17-year old cousin, Tracy Dion, get into a car accident and roll over into a frozen ditch. By the time help arrives at the scene, Tracy is still trapped inside the car, but Arnold and Ruby have disappeared. Three months later, Arnold and Ruby’s bodies are found submerged in water in the ditch over 75 feet away from the accident scene and their cause of death is determined to be exposure. However, the investigation turns up some odd discrepancies to suggest that Arnold and Ruby may have still been alive during the three-month window they were missing before their bodies were brought back to the ditch and placed there by an unknown party. Did the couple actually die of exposure on the same morning of the accident or did something else happen? On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a bizarre unexplained death case which was featured on “Unsolved Mysteries”.

January 14, 1950. West Point, New York. 21-year old Richard Colvin Cox, a second-year cadet at the United States Military Academy, tells his roommate that he is planning to go out to dinner with a visitor, but he does not return and is eventually reported missing. During the preceding week, Cox was visited on multiple occasions by a man whose name may have been “George” and Cox is believed to have been with him when he vanished. George’s identity is never conclusively established and over the years, a number of different theories are presented about Cox’s disappearance. Did Cox have a secret relationship with the mysterious George? Did he become the victim of foul play? Or was Cox recruited to work for the CIA and given a new identity? We shall attempt to answer these questions on this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, which chronicles one of the most baffling military-themed mysteries of all time.
