The desire was to meet the challenging needs and high level of customer demands with Integrity, Superior Service and Unmatched Warranties. Based on the Southwestern corner of Milwaukee County in the City of Franklin, he formed Excel Custom Contractors, LLC. Excel Custom Contractors currently serves the entire Southeastern Wisconsin, Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois communities. It was with the idea of providing ‘custom’ized customer service, to meet the unique individual tastes and product performance goals of his customers. Today Excel Custom Contractors has grown into a mid-sized Residential and Commercial General Contracting and Remodeling Company that can handle any size project from the foundation to the roof. Excel Custom Contractors prides itself in doing the best job the right way the first time, this ensures our customers will get what they expect from both their product choices and quality construction installations.

Since the Spring of 2009, Excel Custom Contractors has brought on a new addition to it’s ownership with James Lawrence Jr. of Oak Creek, Wisconsin. Jim has been working for Excel Custom Contractors for the previous five years as a Carpentar Foreman in which he ran many varying crews and has now become its Vice President and COO. Together with their combined expertise and knowledge of products and skillful installations Excel Custom Contractors is positioned to continue to grow and enhance its offerings to its every expanding customer base.

Robert McDonald

I’m a business entrepreneur, and I consider myself a visionary. I’m always looking to improve on the status quo, and build better projects. I look for more intuitive processes as well as ways to provide higher quality. My soft skills include thinking out of the box, creativity, and trouble-shooting. I see challenging projects as opportunities rather than obstacles. I highly value work well-done, so that means I’m often particular in how we build things. I strive to build things to last, and my ultimate goal is to see our customers experience complete satisfaction with our work.

Growing up in the outdoors was the guiding force that influenced Don on his career path toward becoming the skilled Craftsman he is today. Drawn to the Pacific Northwest, he refined and honed his skills as an arborist and tree surgeon enjoying his time away from work to explore the rivers as a guide. That love of nature is now expressed brilliantly in the works of art he creates. Whether reclaiming lumber from old barns, or repurposing a family’s dying favorite tree, Don is a natural craftsman who sees nature’s beauty beneath the surface. An avid contributor to San Diego’s sustainability ecosystem, Don is working with Trees San Diego and other environmentally conscious organizations to improve the recycling of our natural resources.

The Trades Podcast - Ep 36 Laurie Narciso-Garage82.com

Garage82.com

Laurie Narciso

CEO

[email protected]

Our Mission:

To link underserved, re-entry, minority, and women populations with employers.

Our Purpose:

Providing exposure to the trades through short-term trainings and pre-apprentice programs.

Our Process:

We implement curriculum designed by industry leaders to train individuals in the skilled trades. Then we leverage industry suppliers, employers and job placement programs to help job-ready candidates find the right employer.

Our Story:

Home economics? Clarinet lessons? College? No way! I wanted shop class; a drum kit; a stint in trade school. But “non-traditional jobs for women” weren’t a thing in the 1980s, so off to college I went.

After graduation, I got a great job at EDSI helping low-income, non-custodial parents, and ex-offenders train for and find employment in career pathway positions. I spent over 20 years helping people take control of their futures, and in the process built a great network of industry professionals who helped these individuals reach their goals.

Meanwhile, I logged thousands of hours in my garage, tinkering with vintage items and repurposing flea market finds. My treasures were items other people threw out. I spent time on the tools, feeling accomplished by mastering new skills. My garage became the trade school I never got to attend.

Then the coronavirus made its way around the world, and 41 million people lost their jobs. Many of these jobs are not coming back. I recognized an opportunity in the lack of young people pursuing the skilled trades, where jobs are plentiful. I thought to myself, “Why not merge my career with my avocation and help people find meaningful, sustainable employment in the trades?” Thus, Garage82 was born.

Let me explain the logo. The garage is my happy place, where I go to be creative and relax. “82” represents the 9-year recidivism rate of ex-offenders in the United States, a population I worked with throughout my career. This number is too high! Lowering it requires tapping into each individual’s potential and helping them find steady work with a living wage, something that is almost impossible given the hurdles this population faces upon re-entry.

Finally, the octopus intrigues me. Did you know the octopus has three hearts and nine brains? This sea creature symbolizes flexibility, creativity, intelligence, and expansion—qualities I seek to emulate through Garage82. Together, the name and the logo represent my experiences and my goals.

Laurie Narciso, Garage82 CEO

PHCC San Diego Trades Expo 2/1/25 RSVP HERE MISSION & VISION

Our Commitment to Our Contractors is Everything

The heart of the San Diego PHCC chapter beats at the same pulse as our original founders, and even now, more than a century later, the importance and excitement of the PHCC mission have not been diluted. That mission is to advance and educate the plumbing and HVACR industry for society's health, safety, and comfort and to protect the environment.

Tradesmen that elect to join their local PHCC commit to the collective values of trust, integrity, and service that our chapter has become known for. When you see a technician with a PHCC patch, you know you are working with skilled tradesmen you can trust.

Today, the Academy stands strong and steadfast with terrific staff, an improved curriculum, and a growing number of hands-on labs. The PHCC of San Diego Academy continues to add programs based on the needs of the industry, like the Back-flow Certification. Efforts also extend beyond the classroom, with an increased focus on community outreach specifically to San Diego County Agencies, high schools, and the military. Our office can also act as a recruiter for individuals seeking employment in the P-H-C industry. We do our best to match individuals to members based on their location, experience and initiative.

Our History

During the 1880’s, the transition from outhouses to indoor plumbing was moving at a rapid pace, starting with better homes and commercial buildings. The burgeoning market for indoor plumbing spurred some gasfitters and other metal workers to specialize in this work.

The true craftsmen sought ways to distinguish those who knew what they were doing from those who didn’t. In 1882, a group of these new tradesmen in New York City banded together to form the Master Plumbers Association of New York. Shortly afterward, a like-minded group joined forces in Brooklyn.

In 1883, the 125 members of the New York group formed the National Association of Master Plumbers (NAMP) to provide the public with a complete, safe and sanitary plumbing system. NAMP was the forerunner of the National Association of Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors (NAPHCC), which in 1962 became the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors National Association (PHCC).

The association has evolved over time, always upholding the standards that advance the industry and protect public health and safety. Today, PHCC continues its tradition of excellence by providing the best education, advocacy and connections to help its North American network of professionals strengthen their businesses—now and in the future.
