The Toya Talks Podcast

The Toya Talks Podcast

Toya Washington

The education system teaches us to learn and recall information and at the end of it we are tested and expected to then pass exams. After all said and done the reality is, we are supposed to get a job at the end of it. I was unaware of the difficulties I would encounter at work especially as a Black Woman. How do I navigate work and how do I keep a job? Education institutions do not prepare you for work, racism, bullying, and oppressive managers in the workplace. Where the education system has not prepared you, I will. Toya Talks is a platform birthed on my day to day uploads on Snapchat. I discuss the realities of work from the perspective of a Black Woman and how I have successfully navigated work using my experiences. Toya Talks Podcast covers the world of work and not just the corporate world. Black Women for too long have been overlooked and underrepresented in the workplace. Toya Talks is a safe place and a platform to share, grow and learn, more importantly, educate ourselves and everyone else so we can navigate and grow in the world of work more smoothly. This Podcast contains my opinions and feelings based on my lived experiences, my opinions and my Black experience. My views and experiences are in no way intended to cause offence. Lets put the sensitivity to one side, prepare to laugh, learn & grow!!!!

The workplace has never been a safe place and is not a safe space for Black Women. Being pregnant places women in a vulnerable position, your hormones are raging, your body is changing and you are growing a whole human. Many of us are also managing underlying health conditions too. In spaces where Black Women are not afforded fragility I never felt safe to share with employers or colleagues that I was pregnant. I held down two contracts whilst pregnant and did not disclose my pregnancy. I attended all my hospital and midwife appointments and for 9 months grew a whole child whilst working remotely and never having to share my pregnancy. It felt safer to say nothing. Whilst I recognise this is not possible for all my fellow Black Women, in this episode i share why I made this decision and how I managed to navigate my pregnancy and maintain my privacy whilst still stacking for my maternity leave.

Betrayal - I've learnt that the greatest betrayal and need to then forgive is towards ourselves. Not trusting our instincts and second guessing ourselves are all forms of self betrayal. That job interview that you attend and deep down you know something isn't right but you still accept the role. Or you know its time to leave a role for your own development or mental healthy but you stay out of loyalty for a company that is not loyal to you, despite your better judgement you stay only for them to make you redundant a few months later. Often the interest we pay in these circumstances is reduced self confidence and self esteem which then has a domino effect on our career choices and ultimately how we navigate our careers.
Society has attempted to condition us to believe we are undeserving, and through this we begin the road of self doubt. We question our decisions and even at times question if we are deserving of the fruits of our hard work. Can you see the vicious cycle of self betrayal?
With all this as a considered back drop, what then when we encounter betrayal from others. I have learnt a very important lesson that forgiveness starts with SELF. Either not trust myself or for trying to see the good when the ancestors showed me that something was not right. When betrayal comes from family this is indeed the toughest pill to swallow. How can people you share memories, blood and lineage with betray you? Even family who are not blood but considered family. How do you move past that betrayal?
Whilst I struggle with forgiveness I have learnt that forgiveness of others does not mean re-admittance into my life or even that I need to share that forgiveness. Forgiveness releases you, and whilst I am on this journey its comforting to know what the true meaning of forgiveness is.
In this episode I also discuss late payment interest charges on business invoices. The CEO of an agency attempted to gaslight and intimidate me out of pursuing late payment interest on an invoice which was 4 days late. He sought to question my reasoning and decided to then cause me self doubt in my legitimate claim all whilst the invoice remained unpaid then called me aggressive for asserting my position . All his attempts failed.
Audacity is at an all time high but we trust ourselves and our decisions because when we trust ourselves and our decision making we reaffirm our trust and confidence in ourselves.
Let me share with you what happened and the learning lessons.

Following on from a previous episode 'Black Women Deserve To Be Loved In Public (PT1)' https://www.buzzsprout.com/761990/12678087 (Part 2 coming soon)
If this episode is now live it means I have given birth. Yes I am now a mother @ 38. I live by what I teach. Despite being shamed about not having children and not knowing myself if I wanted Children, I had to do a lot of work to get to this point. This includes therapy, Financial literacy/education, exploring my ovarian health and working through my mother daughter trauma which continues to be something I have to work on because going no contact has been a challenge but key to my mental health and I know that now. I have no clue what I am doing but what I do know is I have done the work and continue to do so. Everyone ignores mental health but it is a key factor in deciding whether to bring life into the world, until you work through your trauma how are you able to ensure you are not complicit in continuing the cycle of generational trauma?
Despite what society and culture has said I chose to focus on developing my career to enable me to create the life for my child that he/she deserves. In doing so I have also been able to develop my career to a stage that I have felt confident and comfortable to take time out to balance motherhood.
The last 9 months has also consisted of mourning my old life where I was the sole focus. There is now a required balance of Career & Motherhood.
