TN174: The art of selling your art – With Cath Brew
The Time Is Now
07/13/20 • 50 min
Developing a sustainable, successful portable business as an artist brings some unique challenges. While many solopreneurs start with identifying a need and providing a solution, an artist’s business begins with a focus on themselves and their own self-expression. And for many people, art is a luxury, rather than an essential need.
Despite these challenges, it is possible to build a successful online and portable business as an artist, and by using the same approaches to marketing as more traditional businesses!
"As hard as it is to put myself out there consistently, I keep doing it because it simply brings results. "In this episode, artist Cath Brew explains how she found clarity of purpose and started her business, Drawn to a Story. As an illustrator and author, Cath brings to life what people feel but can't find the words to express. With a focus on Identity, Belonging and Expat Life, her work navigates around redressing the imbalance that 'otherness' creates.
Cath is the author of the book,’ Living Elsewhere’, where she illustrates in impactful images and short stories the highs and lows of life abroad.
Cath shares how thinking strategically about her purpose as an artist, being consistent in her marketing and listening to her clients has helped her grow her business, and how she has addressed the unique challenges facing artists in business.

You only get one chance at making a first impression. These days that impression is made online. Your LinkedIn profile needs to nail that first impression, no matter who’s looking. Do you know how to get people to notice you on LinkedIn? And do you know if the right people looking at your LinkedIn profile?
Petra Fisher is a LinkedIn consultant. She takes the guesswork out of LinkedIn and helps you harness its full powers to propel your business or career to the next level. She does this by helping people like you create a LinkedIn profile that tells the story of the professional you truly are!
Growing up in The Netherlands Petra took not one, but two gap years (one before and one after college). The first one she spent in Denver, CO and the second one in Washington DC. Back in The Netherlands, she grew restless and within two years of graduating she decided to backpack around Australia for a year. Two years later Petra moved to Australia and ended up staying for 10 years. To explain how this impacted her life it is easiest to quote an Australian neighbor in Amsterdam: “You are more bloody Australian than I am”. Ever since Petra has focused her consulting on expats and their accompanying partners.

Sundae Schneider-Bean is on a mission to help you make the most of your life abroad. She has so much experience and advice to share that we invited her back on the podcast for another episode. In this episode, she shares her three steps to career and life reinvention.
Sundae is an intercultural specialist and a solution-oriented coach. She’s a mother to third-culture kids and has lived overseas since 1998. She comes from the US and has lived in Switzerland, Burkina Faso and today lives in South Africa. She has helped individuals from over 40 countries go through transitions and change. Sundae also works with multinational companies and NGOs to support their employees. And of course, she has had to reinvent herself and has been through the journey a lot of expat partners are facing.
Glimpse on Sundae’s tips in this episode:
- Some of the major challenges with reinvention that expat partners have
“Expat partners feel something inside that says I want something more, but they can’t say it out loud as they feel guilty about feeling this way”
- How to define what you really want to do
“Knowing what you want is in your guts, it is in your body; not is your brain”.
- How to design an action plan
“When it feels almost too far to reach, but you want it so bad, that is when you know that you hit it”
- How to build resilience and the support system you need
“Reinvention is not comfortable; you need to really want it to go through with it.”
