One of the pathologies that produce poverty in the current economic system is the simultaneous deification of things and reification of people: we invest divinity in material things, while people are treated as instruments toward profit. William T. Cavanaugh explores the Eucharist as an antidote to this idolatry. The Eucharist provides a better, sacramental way of seeing God's presence in the material world, while simultaneously offering an identification of people, especially the poor, with God in Christ.

Speakers:
William T. Cavanaugh, Ph.D., Professor of Catholic Studies and Director of the Center for World Catholicism and Intercultural Theology at DePaul University

Jenny Newsome Martin, Ph.D., Department of Theology, University of Notre Dame

The ThinkND Podcast - Black Domers, Part 3: Student Athletes
play

11/21/20 • 57 min

Episode Topic: Student Athletes

As our nation faces urgent calls for racial justice, many members of the Notre Dame family are seeking opportunities for meaningful conversations about equity. We are all hopeful that an honest dialogue can advance understanding and become a foundation for action. It is in that spirit that the Notre Dame Alumni Association Affinity Groups were pleased to present a collaborative shared reading experience sponsored by the Diversity Council, ND Women Connect, Senior Alumni, YoungND, Asian Pacific Alumni of ND, Black Alumni of ND, Hispanic Alumni of ND, and Native American Alumni of ND. In fall 2020, all alumni, parents, and friends of Notre Dame were invited to join the affinity groups in unpacking Black Domers: African-American Students at Notre Dame in Their Own Words, edited by Don Wycliff ’69 and David Krashna ’71, with a foreword by the late Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, C.S.C., ’39. Black Domers features 75 essays and profiles from Notre Dame alumni sharing their reflections and experiences across more than seven decades. This collection of stories was and will continue to be used as an important tool to spark dialogue and learning among members of the Notre Dame community.

Featured Speakers:

  • Kevin Hawkins ’81, Alumnus of University of Notre Dame
  • Indi Jackson ’17, Alumna of University of Notre Dame
  • Corey Robinson ’17, Alumnus of University of Notre Dame

One century ago on Memorial Day — Friday, May 30, 1924 — the campus community gathered to dedicate a permanent landmark honoring former Notre Dame students who had died in or as a result of the Great War. Today, the east entrance of the Basilica has the familiar phrase “God, Country, Notre Dame” engraved above the oaken double doors and is known affectionately as the World War I Memorial Door. Celebrate the spirit of this special anniversary as we honor and remember members of our Notre Dame family who gave their lives.

We are mindful of the ways the simple phrase “God, Country, Notre Dame” has become a rallying cry, and how the World War I Memorial Door has become an iconic place of pilgrimage and a symbol of faith, patriotism, and loyalty to all who love Notre Dame. Our speaker lineup is a shining example of the “God, Country, Notre Dame” ethos – just like Fr. Ted.

Presenter:
Rev. Austin Collins, CSC, '77,
Vice President for Mission Engagement and Church Affairs
