Maxime Cressy and Aryna Sabalenka excellent on court on Saturday, and they were arguably even better in the interview room afterwards. Catherine and Matt went to meet them both. The chat with Cressy is in today's pod, and Matt's grilling of Sabalenka can be found in today's newsletter (link to receive it below). There's also chat about Marin Cilic vs. Andrey Rublev, Clara Tauson vs. Danielle Collins and much more.

Catherine, David and Matt are together to talk through the biggest stories from Day 2, which was headlined by Emma Raducanu’s win over Sloane Stephens and Andy Murray’s victorious return to the John Cain Arena after THAT retirement video three years ago.

Elsewhere, there’s chat about the Nick Kyrgios show and our feeling towards it, Liam Broady’s rainbow laces, a shock defeat for Leylah Fernandez, Aryna Sabalenka’s serving yips, a battle for Felix Aguer-Aliassime, and an emotional win for Sam Stosur which extended her singles career.

Emma Raducanu is the US Open champion. At 18, on just her second Grand Slam appearance, she qualified and went all the way to the title without dropping a set. There's never been anything else like it in tennis.

At the end of an incredible night, Catherine and Matt react to her 6-4 6-3 win over Leylah Fernandez, the high-quality tennis on display, the feeling of joy it elicited, the extraordinary post-match speech by Fernandez, and why it's a moment beyond compare.

Looking ahead to the men's final, is Daniil Medvedev ready to win his first major title? And will The Grand Slam being on the line make Novak Djokovic unstoppable?

We also run through all the results and stories from the doubles and wheelchair events.

The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. It is produced weekly year-round, and daily during the Grand Slam tournaments. It is crowdfunded by listeners each December.

Novak Djokovic will not compete at the 2022 Australian Open after losing his appeal in the Federal Court and being deported from Australia. How did it all come to this? And what effect will it have on the tournament?

In terms of actual tennis, Catherine, David and Matt look through the draws, pick out some interesting storylines, decide who's in and who's out of The Mix, and reveal what went on during media day on Saturday.

With 3 days until the start of the Australian Open, we still do not know if Novak Djokovic will be cleared to play.

On Friday, he had his visa cancelled again, and again he appealed. Catherine and Matt were in Melbourne, with David in Solihull, UK, when the verdict dropped, and they bring us up-to-date, tell us about ramifications and the Melbourne Park setup, and talk about the latest tennis action on the court.

Day one was unspectacular, but somewhat soothing. Afterwards, Catherine, David and Matt convened to figure out why it felt flat. How much of it was due to lingering fallout from all of the Novak Djokovic drama? And how much of it was the simple lack of compelling matches? Even so, there were plenty of interesting stories to discuss, including Coco Gauff’s shock defeat to Qiang Wang, mixed fortunes for recent champions Madison Keys, Aslan Karatsev and Thanasi Kokkinakis, winning returns for Rafael Nadal and Naomi Osaka, a physical transformation from Carlos Alcaraz, a fourth straight defeat for Cameron Norrie, ruthless efficiency from Ash Barty, and narrow wins for Amanda Anisimova and Matteo Berrettini.

Most people had Alexander Zverev in the men's singles final, not least Alexander Zverev. Denis Shapovalov was not one of them. So how did he do it? Catherine, David and Matt all watched it and have takes, and David spoke to Shapovalov's new coach Jamie Delgado to find out more. Catherine got a fascinating answer from Rafael Nadal in his press conference (you can hear that in this podcast), and are Madison Keys and Gael Monfils playing the finest tennis of their careers?
