The Strong Stoic Podcast - #86 - Kai Whiting and Practical Stoicism
play

07/01/21 • 72 min

In this episode, I have the privilege of speaking with Dr. Kai Whiting who is a lecturer and researcher in sustainability and Stoicism. Kai also just released a book, Being Better: Stoicism For A World Worth Living In, which he co-authored with Leonidas Konstantakos. One of my core values with this podcast is keeping it open to discuss any topic, especially those that may not be the easiest to discuss (or hear). Myself and Kai definitely test those boundaries. We cover Stoicism (including the not-so-nice bits), ideologies, relationships of all sexualities, the moment when everything changed for Kai, etc. Life isn't always easy, but Stoicism is a great model for how to navigate that complexity. My hope is that we demonstrate that through this discussion. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

There are "epochs" in life where we are essentially different people. Many of us, for example, are vastly different (hopefully so) than the teenage version of ourselves. Life goes on, and we are forced to go with it, but do we always do so with grace?Of course not! In fact, teenagers in adult bodies are a regular sight. This is a bloody shame, as they aren't living up to their potential, yet it's entirely understandable. Growing up is hard, after all, and we don't always do so willingly. In this episode, I want to discuss transitioning through the stages of your life and why it's so important. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Strong Stoic Podcast - #153 - Juliet Rose: Fiction, Writing, & Redemption
play

02/22/22 • 53 min

Juliet Rose is a fiction author with a passion for helping people improve their lives and become happier through story-telling. Her work is deep, honest, and often brutally painful (kind of like life sometimes!), but offers hope to those who are struggling with modern problems. We had a wonderful talk about the differences between fiction and non-fiction, the therapeutic aspect of writing and reading, and the possibility of redemption for past transgressions. Virtue and justice are two of the four pillars of Stoicism. In fact, it's a core idea in many philosophies, though they don't all agree on what that really means. Aiming for the good is, well, good! However, is there ever a situation in which doing an "unethical act" is actually ethical?Life is bloody complicated; that much is for sure. The line between moral acts and immoral acts isn't exactly black and white. How, then, do we know if an act is truly ethical? What criteria can we use in such ethical grey areas? These are the questions I will be addressing in this episode. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

At this stage in the COVID pandemic, the Canadian government is imposing very strict stay at home regulations. Some are applauding this, while others are claiming this is taking away basic human liberties. The truth is that there are reasons for both and they are in many ways related. You see, responsibility is linked with oppression. It's been said before that "with great power comes great responsibility", and it's true.Today's episode I'll be discussing the link between oppression and personal responsibility specifically in regards to the COVID pandemic. How often have you heard the advise: "just be you", or some variation it? "Just do you", "to thyself be true", etc. It's actually great advice! We absolutely SHOULD be true to ourselves, but there's a problem... it isn't always easy.Sometimes it is. That is, when society's expectations align with you being you. A lot of times, however, it is not easy. Those are the times when society's expectations conflict with you being you. In these cases, it begs the question: what should we do? Should we stay true to ourselves, or should we conform to the group? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
