S2_E22 – The Business of Hollywood: Why You Need a Producer to Get Your Project Made
For the last few weeks, we've been discussing how Hollywood works. What are some of the things that you should know as a writer so that you don't end up getting ripped off or scammed by a so-called opportunity that some charlatan brings your way? We also started talking about option agreements and how you have to get a project to a producer, either a novel that you want adapted into a screenplay, or a screenplay that you've written. It's got to be about the story. That's what a producer is working with. This week, I want to explain the basics of what a producer does. This is to educate you. These are broad strokes, not step by step instructions. I don't claim to have all the answers. I just want to give writers more insight into the movie making process so that they're not ignorant, and so that they're less gullible or less easy to be deceived.

The Business of Hollywood: How do I get My Story Made into a Movie?
S2 E21 - The Business of Hollywood: How do I get My Story Made into a Movie?
On the last episode, I talked about how writers are potentially getting ripped off because they don't understand the business of Hollywood. Today, I address how Hollywood actually works. How does the business work? What is the order? What are the terms? What are the expectations? How do you get an independent project made? If somebody comes to you and claims to be a producer who wants to option your script or your novel, what should you expect? What's legit? Why would they option it? What does that even mean?
It can be very, very confusing. To alleviate that, this episode addresses some of the basic terms and procedures of the entertainment industry so that writers who are working in it, or writers who aren't, will have the knowledge they need to navigate the industry anyway. You don't want to get scammed. But you also don't want to miss out on legitimate opportunities because you're afraid of getting scammed. And you also don't want to get too greedy because you don't understand how the business works.

Why Establishing a Pattern and then Breaking it in Story is One of the Best Tools You Can Learn
S2_E23 – Why Establishing a Pattern and then Breaking it in Story is one of the Best Tools You can Learn
One of the primary rules that we learn as storytellers that we need to accomplish is show don't tell. But what I find is that many writers simply struggle with that concept. One reason why is because they're unclear exactly what it means, let alone how to accomplish it.
Today, I want to share with you a fantastic trick that you can use to start mastering this skill of showing vs. telling. Namely, you establish a pattern and then break it. The basic premise behind this technique is that you’re learning to think in terms of creating visual cues or images that your audience can interpret to determine what’s happening inside of the character, or where they are at emotionally. This works for their internal emotional journey as well as for developing character relationships. It’s a fantastic tool that all writers should master, because it’s so effective at communicating gobs of information to the audience.

WHAT'S NEXT? Join us next Thursday for another layer to this technique. Here, we’ve talked about establishing a pattern and breaking it. Next week, we’ll see this applied in a variety of different ways so that you can get an idea of how helpful this tool can be.
