The Storyteller’s Mission with Zena Dell Lowe

EPISODE DESCRIPTION:

A-ha moment #2 = In this episode, Zena shares how she had a terrible time setting boundaries in business early in her career, so in order to prevent her life from being hijacked by others, she needed some guiding principles and pre-planned phrases that she could use at the drop of the hat. The following are 5 empowering phrases that Zena has discovered over the years that she's adopted to help her navigate some fairly tricky waters, without overturning the boat or being tossed out of the boat by the rest of the crew.
These 5 phrases protected Zena from being thrown off course by others. It’s our job to protect ourselves. No one else is going to do it. But we need to learn how to do it in a way that doesn't offend others or cause undue conflict or stress. Mastering these 5 phrases may literally transform your professional life if you put them into use.
The 5 Empowering phrases that can transform your professional life are:
1. I could be wrong, I often am.
2. I changed my mind.
3. Interesting. Let me think about that.
4. You’re right. (Instead of: I know).
5. No. (Why?!)

  • I just don’t feel comfortable with that.
  • It just doesn’t sit right with me.
  • It just isn’t for me.

These phrases eliminate the burden to be right, buy time to process when feeling pressured to make a decision, and give you a way out if you’ve committed to something you now realize was a mistake.

41. How the Desire to Get into the "Inner Circle" Can Destroy You

EPISODE DESCRIPTION:

As human beings, we all have an intense desire to become a member of some exclusive "inner circle," and to establish relationships in the business with professionals we think can help further our careers, rather than just people we like on the basis of friendship. There is a desire and a temptation and a need, even, to network or associate with the right conferences, to meet the right agents, to submit to the right festivals or the right contests, or be part of the right writers groups, or to have the right social media platforms, to have enough followers, to gain followers, to have a following so that you look better to publishers. I mean, there's so much pressure that goes beyond the craft itself. And it can be exhausting. And overwhelming. It can literally induce fear. We feel like we are missing out or failing all the time. And what are we supposed to do about that?
Focus on the work.

43. Understanding Justice and Suffering: Three Kinds of Suffering that Radically Impact Our Perceptions of God

In this special episode of The Storyteller's Mission, Zena Dell Lowe breaks down the twin concepts of Justice and Suffering.
Justice is that need inside of us that demands that wrong doers pay for their deeds. This is a concept we innately agree with, and so we wait expectantly for God's wrath.
On the other side of the coin is our suffering, but most of us don't realize that suffering can be categorized into three different types, each with its own cause and purpose:

  1. Calamity is suffering experienced as a result of living in a fallen world where “bad things” happen for no apparent reason.
  2. Chastisement is suffering inflicted by God for the purpose of discipline and correction (fatherly discipline for the moral improvement and personal well-being of His children).
  3. Retributive punishment is suffering inflicted by God for the purpose of satisfying justice and payment for sin.

It is essential that we learn the difference of each of these types of suffering so that we don't draw false conclusions about God and the reasons for our pain. Knowing these categories can help us correctly interpret what's happening to us, and can free us from unnecessary fear, anger, or shame.
