09/30/22 • 109 min

The sun is setting on Zeitgeist Summer and today we take a look at the 2008 documentary/live performance feature "If All Goes Wrong".

This warts and all documentary covers the Pumpkins infamous residencies at The Orange Peel in Asheville and The Fillmore in San Francisco in the summer of 2007.

Frank and Pat talk about their deep appreciation for the Zeitgeist-era lineup, Billy's love-hate relationship with the fans (and vice versa), the uncomfortable moments of watching a band and the members we love having a rough time and of course, more Jimmy adulation.

And also...Gossamer. GOSSAMER!

We also share news of how the Pumpkast episodes will operate moving forward.

Cuddle up to your homemade Billy bust and enjoy this episode!

The Smashing Pumpkast - WILLIAM PATRICK CORGAN - OGILALA w/ DR. THOMAS WHITFIELD
play

05/03/23 • 214 min

In 2017, Billy Corgan released his 2nd solo album, "Ogilala", but this time under the name William Patrick Corgan and with a much more organic and stripped-down sound. It's an album containing some of Corgan's best work and illustrates the power of his songwriting and ability to bend and shape the core of a song into the sound he envisions.

Joining Frank as guest co-host is a long-time friend and Pumpkinhead, Dr. Thomas Whitfield. Thomas digs deep and uses his Ph.D. to help break down the lyrics with surgical detail. If getting super in-depth and nerdy diving into WPC lyrics is your bag, then this episode is for you!

Frank and Thomas discuss being wary of people who aren’t passionate about something/anything, hiding Mellon Collie and the Goosebumps books from religious parents, seeds of CYR and ATUM found in Ogilala and Thomas' “Special K” experience with the album.

Plus a quick chat about the gorgeous short film, Pillbox, co-directed by Linda Strawberry.

The Smashing Pumpkast - ZWAN: Intro/History + The Glass House Debut Show (11-16-2001)
play

12/08/21 • 108 min

Zeason's Greetings! We're kicking off Zwan Zeason with a lil' introduction to the band and its history, and then cover their "first official, ticketed show," which took place at The Glass House in Pomona, CA on November 16th, 2001 (listen to it HERE).

We of course get right into the impressive musical pedigrees of each individual band member, our personal connections to their various pre- and post-Zwan projects, and recall how we felt when it all came together to form ZWAN (albeit still a Pre-Paz Zwan). We also define the meaning of "Cool Jesus" music, debate the merits of Zwan Live vs. Zwan Recorded, and agree that "Chrysanthemum" would have been a killer single.

All that plus the big questions: How glorious is "Glorious"? What would the world be like if Zwan had stuck around? How great would an official SP/Corgan lyric site be? And who wants some "Tuesday Wine"? All in all, your hosts found this show to be a strong statement of an official debut by the band. Seriously, you have to hear the live shows to get the FULL context of Zwan. Ziz the Zeason, after all!

The Smashing Pumpkast - KATIE COLE RETURNS!

While we put the finishing touches on Zwan Zeason, we decided to catch back up with Katie Cole to talk about her new single "Dreams of Mine" (and how it speaks to being an artist), virtual shows, "The Uncomfortable Zone", manifesting more cats, being open to the future and staying true to the art you can be proud of.

She also gives us a tiny peek behind the curtain (as much as she can) of her work for the upcoming Smashing Pumpkins 33 song opus!

By the end, you'll agree, all podcasts could use sweet chorus effects on their voices!

The Smashing Pumpkast - BONUS: Listener Huron John Joins Us For A Pumpkast Chat!
play

06/12/21 • 74 min

It's another installment of our listener chats, Pumpkinheads, and joining us this time is indie musician and artist Huron John! We discuss how his work is influenced by the Pumpkins, keeping the DIY ethos alive, and what it's like being a "Gen Z" Pumpkins fan (and the ridiculousness of these generational labels). We also delve into the inner workings of Spotify and the new gatekeepers of today's music industry, what Tame Impala and My Bloody Valentine have in common with the Pumpkins, and the rich tapestry that is Billy’s vision for the band.

We all relate on the idea of Mellon Collie training our young ears for a diverse musical palette, and Huron shares some SP memories like seeing the Pumpkins in Chicago with his Dad and visiting the record store to buy the Teargarden box set.

All that plus the importance of physical media, more love for CYR and that feeling when art finds you in the right place and time. Hope that place and time for you and this episode is HERE and NOW because it's a great one!

Check out Huron's brand new album Cartoon Therapy (and the boardgame-inspired vinyl release of it on June 17th)!
