Putin's War in Ukraine: Russian Roulette with Leonid Ragozin
The Slavic Connexion
03/23/22 • 41 min
Journalist Leonid Ragozin joins us to talk about the irrationality of Putin's invasion of Ukraine and Zelensky's steadfast resistance which has led to the present stalemate situation that we now have. Ragozin states, "History will show whether Zelensky was right in this game of chicken to collide with Putin..." Ragozin calls Putin's gamble a suicidal move ("complete insanity"), not just for Putin's regime but for Russia itself. "I don't see how... they [can] win in the way they want to win." Boldly he says that no one has done more to harm Russia's interests since World War II than Putin himself who falsely calls himself the protector of Russophones in Ukraine -- "Putin is fighting his own people." See Ragozin's Al-Jazeera article here: https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2022/2/24/is-putins-gamble-on-ukraine-rational

INFORMATION WARS Symposium Part 5: "Annexation Agenda" and Protests in Russia and Belarus (Speaker - Aliaksandr Herasimenka)
The Slavic Connexion
05/16/19 • 19 min
Dr. Herasimenka in his own words:
I have been involved in media production since 2006. My favourite time as a professional in the field includes seven years of work as a journalist, an editor and a media relation specialist. During that time, I authored hundreds of publications both analytical and journalistic for TV, radio, newspapers and the web. This work was honoured with national and international awards. Currently, I am a research associate and a visiting lecturer at Westminster School of Media and Communications, University of Westminster, United Kingdom. I am also a Fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States. As an activist of several NGOs, I followed the election processes in difficult environments like Russia, Belarus and Ukraine where elections are not necessarily associated with a "democratic procedure." Struggle for the world without borders (at least in Eastern Europe) was another great passion of that period of my life.

North Macedonia and the Mired Quest for EU Accession
The Slavic Connexion
01/17/22 • 29 min
On this episode, UT CREEES's new cohort of MA graduate students, under the direction of Dr. Mary Neuburger, presents their findings of a Fall 2021 project in which they analyzed North Macedonia’s mired quest for EU accession, which was blocked for over 25 years by Greece and since 2019 has been held up by a Bulgarian ultimatum. Since both Greece and Bulgaria are EU members, they have veto power over Macedonian accession, which has put the country now called North Macedonia into an untenable position in its desire to become a fully integrated part of Europe. Thanks for listening!

Victims' State // Slavic Folklore in YA Fiction
The Slavic Connexion
01/05/20 • 33 min
In this episode, we trek back in time to the late Habsburg Empire and post-World War I Eastern Europe with Dr. Hsia. And then we discuss Slavic Folklore in modern young adult literature with Dr. Martiniuk who talks about the romanticized Russian symbols used by authors everywhere of all backgrounds. We'll get into the issues behind using such symbols, and if it's cultural appreciation or appropriation.
ABOUT THE GUESTS:
Ke-Chin Hsia
Having his received his PhD from the University of Chicago in 2013, Dr. Hsia is a lecturer in the department of history at Indiana University Bloomington. His current book manuscript, tentatively titled Victims’ State: War and Welfare in Austria, 1868-1925, is an analysis of how the Austrian state (first Imperial/Habsburg and then republican) and society tackled the human and social consequences of soldering in an era of universal military service, democratizing political culture, and totalizing war mobilization. Two other research projects are underway. One is on the “internal colonization” proposals in Imperial Austria during the First World War. The other is about political asylum and law and order in revolutionary Vienna. Growing up in Taiwan, receiving graduate education in the U.S., and doing research in Europe, He is also very interested in the rise of social insurance systems in Europe and East Asia from a transnational perspective. Additionally, his fascination with baseball as a subject of international and transnational history is growing as well. He is a member of the research network, The Quest for Welfare and Democracy, hosted by European University Institute.

Inside Dugin's Beard with Tom & Matt
The Slavic Connexion
04/12/19 • 32 min
In this episode Matt and Tom discuss everything you probably NEVER wanted to know about Alexander Dugin. But who is Dugin and what does he want? Wikipedia says simply "[he] is a Russian political analyst and strategist known for his fascist views." High commendation, indeed. But Dugin and his concept of Eurasianism is far too complicated for us in general. However, Tom could write a book about this subject... and he probably will, so this ought to be interesting.
Books mentioned:
1) (Recommended read!) Masha Gessen - THE FUTURE IS HISTORY https://www.amazon.com/Future-History-Totalitarianism-Reclaimed-Russia/dp/159463453X/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=the+future+is+history&qid=1555029233&s=gateway&sr=8-1
2) Alexander Dugin - GEOPOLITICS OF POSTMODERN https://www.amazon.com/Geopolitics-postmodern-Russian-Dugin/dp/5519515441/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=alexander+dugin&qid=1555029494&s=gateway&sr=8-4
3) Alexander Dugin - FOURTH POLITICAL THEORY (Четвертая политическая теория) https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15785079-the-fourth-political-theory
And for a "fun" deep-dive into Eurasianism, Marlene Laruelle's RUSSIAN EURASIANISM: AN IDEOLOGY OF EMPIRE ought to cover the concept in full: https://www.amazon.com/Russian-Eurasianism-Ideology-Marlène-Laruelle/dp/1421405768/ref=sxbs_sxwds-stvp?pd_rd_i=1421405768&pd_rd_r=f8eb50e2-6b3c-4149-accf-390e012bf7f3&pd_rd_w=wGIv8&pd_rd_wg=eDgg7&pf_rd_p=5c5ea0d7-2437-4d8a-88a7-ea6f32aeac11&pf_rd_r=XRP5TC55RSVK141V5QZF&qid=1555029573&refinements=p_27%3AA.+Dugin&s=books&text=A.+Dugin

A Matter of Defense: Russia's Arms Industry, Post-Soviet Wars, and American Pragmatism
The Slavic Connexion
10/15/23 • 48 min
On this episode, Misha talks with Ruslan Pukhov, a Russian defense analyst and the director of the Moscow-based Centre for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies (CAST). Mr. Pukhov shares about the origins of CAST during the late 90s, the state of Russia's defense economy, and his views on the current war in Ukraine. He states that neither the Ukrainian public nor Ukrainian leadership and elites understand what "victory" means in terms of a realistic approach and that continued American support, strongly dependent upon the upcoming US presidential elections in his view, is critical to Ukraine's prospects in this war.
