We made it through another year and 2023 this year like many brought some challenges, a lot of rewards and a ton of learning. I had the idea here in our first year looking through our episodes to see what messages we heard from our guests that enlightened us and challenged us to think through many complicated issues that we grapple with as humans. There were moments of hope, clarity, inspiration and so many people who are trying to make the world a better place. I will be reflecting on 2023 through the lens of our guests and our listeners.

In this episode, Jayson is joined by Greg Lygon, a former member of Calvary Temple, a church in Sterling, Virginia that has spent more than a decade ensnared in scandals about emotional, sexual and physical abuse, controlling members and alienating them from the rest of the world.
They will talk about community, loss of power and religion, the prevalence of cults hidden behind buildings that look like any other religious organization, religious trauma in general and what happens to you emotionally and socially when religious leaders, the people who are supposed to guide us, our Shepherds, betray us.

We have taken you to what the life of a New York Times reporter and a podcaster trying to cover The Lost and Forgotten is like. We've looked at the world through the eyes of an FBI profiler and a woman who's trying to catch a serial killer who's killed her cousin. But this month...the month of October, each week we're going to take you into the world of horror, the paranormal, and some darkness.

We will explore the spooky month through the lens of a horror writer. We'll look at what it takes to create characters that are scary and nice. We'll look at why we as people are so fascinated by darkness with an author, and we'll explore the real life nightmare of the serial killer Israel Keys. One of our episodes this month will be with Jason, the creator of the Santa Maybe, a Criminal Podcast, which you will hear the trailer for in this episode.

Stay tuned for a month of horror, paranormal and darkness.

Joining Jayson today is Allison Dickson, who's been writing novels and short stories for more than 15 years and who's the host of the Ding Dong Darkness Time podcast. Allison is the author of several well-reviewed, independently published novels as well as a debuted thriller, The Other Mrs. Miller. That book was picked up by Putnam in the United States and other publishers across the globe. Some of the other writing she has done includes the horror thriller, Strings, a chilling tale of entrapment and greed and the dystopian science fiction novel, Last Supper.

In this episode, we're going to explore our fascination with darkness but one thing I can guarantee is you're going to find this conversation a lot brighter than you imagined.

At a time when so much divides us, music like fictional books, television and movies are one of those things that tends to bring us together, Dani and Colton and their group NI/CO, have put a focus on what ties us together as partners in life and in music.

In 2016, Colton and Dani began writing and within two years they had a body of work that they released their first single which was a creative spin on Marvin Gay's, What's Going On. Eventually, they moved to Los Angeles where they've become well known for their work producing music videos and songs both as cover artists and for their own work. They have also created songs written with producers in Nashville, Los Angeles and London and have been featured on several top Spotify playlists and have appeared on various music networks including the CW Network, VH1, BET and Freeform, featured in promos for The Today Show, the World of Dance and advertising campaigns for Spotify and Ralph Lauren.

They've been entrepreneurial in their efforts doing everything from building custom wedding playlists, creating custom covers, creating their own music and performing.

In this episode, Jayson is joined by Kevin Joseph Grogan, who is a former Savannah Chatham metropolitan police department homicide detective who has a reputation as a straight shooter, who cares passionately about public safety and the people in the mostly poor minority and dangerous neighborhoods that for twelve years he was sworn to protect. Kevin has traded his badge and gun in for a pen and now is the author of two books. The 2018 book Black Sheep White Cop and the 2022 book Ruffian.

They discuss the type of people who go into law enforcement, the price they pay not just physically but mentally and emotionally, the stigma that prevents so many of those officers from getting the treatment they need and the anxiety and its impact on their performance in the field.

Jayson and Kevin discuss the toll that being a police officer took on Kevin's personal life and the reason why he's taken to writing both as a form of therapy and as a way to promote a better way of policing.

He has been twice nominated for the Bram Stoker Award for superior achievement which is the top award for horror writing presented annually by the Horror Writers Association.

Brett is an attorney and his interests include horror, science fiction, the paranormal and other whodunnit mysteries. He's the host of the Prosecutor's Podcast where he and his co-host Alice tackle well-known and less known true crime cases. Today we're going to continue our discussion about the paranormal, horror, science fiction and all that's mysterious and spooky both about fiction and in reality.
