How I Set Goals for the New Year
the SHOW UP society podcast
12/31/19 • 21 min
009. This is a meaty episode so you might want to listen to this one when you have a pen and paper handy. Listening to this after january 1st? Who cares? It’s never too late to work on your goals for the year. There is no perfect start date.
- REFLECTION - start with reflection - what do you want more of? Less of?
- WHERE ARE YOU NOW? Look at the main pillars of life and rate where you are right now in those areas. 1 is not satisfied at all, 10 is it couldn’t get any better. this a zero judgment zone. Then pick up to 3 areas you’d like to focus on in 2020. Write them down.
- How do you want to FEEL at the end of 2020? We start with the WHY you are choosing the goals or the habits you are choosing. And i believe that if you dig down to the deepest meaning of the WHY, it is just an emotion that you want to feel. So, i try to come up with 5 feelings that you deeply want to feel at the end of each day, each month, the year.
- Once you have your list of 5 feelings, imagine a person who feels that way. Maybe it’s future you, maybe it’s someone that you look up to. If you are going to be a person who experiences these feelings, what thing are you doing to make that happen. Make a brainstorm of all the thigns that come to mind that are actins or results that you would be doing if you were feeling that way.
- WORD OF THE YEAR: Some people also like to choose a word of the year or a phrase of the year.
- BRAINSTORM L Now you’re going to brainstorm a list of possible goals for 2020. Write down alll the things you can think of that you think would be a cool goal. Don’t worry about HOW you will do it, don’t worry about if you have the time or the money or the skills or the emotional capacity to do them.
- CHOOSE GOALS:: Let’s pick a few goals that will get you closer to where you want to be at the end of the year. Take your list of feelings, your word of the year and the 3 life pillars that you want to focus on and you’re going to make up to 7 goals for 2020. You want each goal to be getting you closer to that list of feelings, you want it to improve at least one of the 3 life pillars you’re focusing on, and you want it to align with your word of the year. You also want to make sure you’re not choosing too many big, giant goals at one time. You want to set yourself up for success here. Write them down. You are already ahead of the game. Writing down your goals makes them more powerful.
- When choosing your goals, pick what works for you. Not what you think is right or what someone else would approve of. This is your life. This is your day. Live it for you. When you

the SHOW UP society podcast
03/20/25 • 24 min

i share some striking before and afters and some big wins my clients have created.
if you are a high-achiever who's spent years pleasing others to the point of burnout, please listen to this episode. i've helped so many clients just like you.
in my coaching sessions, I help clients celebrate wins (retraining their brains to not just focus on the negatives), identify limiting beliefs, and create doable plans toward meaningful goals.
I ask powerful questions that help you reconnect with your authentic desires and build the self-trust needed to pursue them, regardless of what others think. and don't discount the accountability that comes with working with a coach.

clients who come to me feeling stuck, indecisive, and self-critical discover newfound confidence, clarity, and purpose.
my clients publish books, launch businesses, negotiate better contracts, improve athletic performance, and most importantly, stop sacrificing their happiness to please others.

how my past careers helped create the coach i am today.
the SHOW UP society podcast
03/14/25 • 48 min
233. what happens when you mix a lawyer, an artist, an event planner, a product-based business owner and a running coach?
you get me!
i'm a life and career coach with a fun and diverse toolkit for helping clients transform their lives.
in this personal episode, i share my multifaceted journey from uncertain college graduate to confident coach.
i share insight and funny stories from running track at UNC and studying journalism, to attending law school while having my first child, to launching multiple businesses including a craft company, running camps, and a stationery brand.
each of those experiences taught me important things that now serve my coaching practice.
law school showed me how to quickly spot the issue so we know what to work on.
art licensing and my stationery company taught me how to handle rejection and keep going (97% of my pitches resulted in a "no").
running camps and teaching fitness classes taught me how to listen, observe and find wins for each person to celebrate.
event planning taught me how to manage chaos and stay organized and focused.
i used to hesitate to set a goal because i thought it might be a waste of time and energy to pursue it, only to change my mind once i got there.
as you'll discover as you walk through my journey with me, nothing is wasted.
each of your experiences contributes to who you are becoming. if you're multi-passionate and afraid to commit to a direction, choose something today and start. you'll never discover what works for you until you're taking action.
