The Sensible Project Manager Podcast

Setting personal goals to become a project manager is an important step to realizing your aspiration to enter into the project management field. During this episode, Naomi Caietti and the Sensible Project Manager helps Jared Coffin, the Aspiring Project Manager, work on his goals to do just that...become a project manager.

During the Podcast

I believe that setting personal goals are important to successfully accomplishing our life’s vision. There are several quotes that come to mind that drives this concept home.

What we are is God’s gift to us. What we become is our gift to God. ~ Eleanor Powell
People with goals succeed because they know where they’re going. ~ Earl Nightingale
All our dreams can come true –if we have the courage to pursue them. ~ Walt Disney
If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll end up someplace else. ~ Yogi Berra

When setting goals it is important to create SMART goals.

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Relevant
  • Time Bound

Also, when setting goals, it is important to include objectives for each goal. From there Naomi suggested that Jared created action plans for each goal so that he has a plan to attain each of his goals.

SPM 026 | Self-Assessment of Aspiring Project Manager Jared Coffin

Jared took the Myers Briggs personality test and SWOT self-assessment in an effort to help understand those things that he should focus on as he becomes a project manager.

During the Podcast

During this episode Naomi Caietti and I review the self-assessment results of these two test. As a result of the Myers Briggs test we discover that Jared is identified as an INFP personality. INFP represents Introversion (I), iNtuition (N), Feeling (F), and Perception (P). Naomi helps unpack those results to translate what that might mean to Jared and his goal of becoming a project manager.

Myers Briggs Personality Test

This personality test was developed by Isabel Briggs Myers and Katharine Briggs and was based off of the work of C. G. Jung. This assessment helps identify your personality based on sixteen distinctive personality types. These sixteen personality types are derived from a combination of the four dichotomies listed below:

  • Favorite world – what is your focus Extraversion “E” or Introversion “I”?
  • Information – are you Sensing “S” or do you use Intuition “N”?
  • Decisions – when making decisions do you focus on Thinking “T” or Feeling “F”?
  • Structure – when dealing with the outside world are you Judging “J” or Perceiving “P”?

For those of you who are interested in discovering your own personality test results you can find out more and take the Myers Briggs Personality Test here.

Personal SWOT Analysis

Also during the podcast we reviewed Jared’s self-assessment using the SWOT method. Using this method you self-evaluate your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Naomi suggested that Jared work further on his initial assessment by sitting down with others he knows to add to the assessment. Jared agreed to have some “coffee chats” with friends and associates and get their input to further develop Jared’s SWOT analysis.

SPM 028 | Applying Project Management Behaviors as an Aspiring Project Manager

In the final session with Naomi Caietti, Jared discovers the final steps required to apply project management behaviors into his personal development plan. In the past three sessions with Naomi she has helped Jared focus on a plan which will help him develop the skills and behaviors that make a successful project manager.

During the Podcast Applying Project Management Behavior

In episode 25 Naomi shared with us a study called Key Leadership Behaviors to Advance in Project Management. In this study we learned that there are six behaviors that are important for project managers to focus on to be successful in project management. Additionally, there are five more behaviors that are pertinent to both project managers and program managers.

As an aspiring PM, Jared has evaluated his current strengths and behaviors and is developing a personal development plan which will help him leverage his strengths and minimize his behavior gaps. In doing so, he will improve his ability to become a project manager.

Step 3 – Leverage your Strengths & Minimize Behavior Gaps

Naomi has written a blog post which identifies step 3 in Jared’s path to developing himself to become a PM.

The components of step three are:

  • Identify mentors with similar project management behaviors.
  • Participate in projects which will help build targeted project management skills.
  • Attend targeted training that will enhance the project management behaviors.
  • Create an action plan to leverage your strengths and minimize your behavior gaps.
