The Seneca Scene

The Seneca Scene is off this week, so instead we’re airing an episode from our first season, way back in October, that we think encapsulates our mission of finding great people and stories at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. For this episode we welcomed Sarah Walters ’19, a major in Genocide, Human Rights, and Peace Action, for a discussion on taking action and how to remain committed and involved through both campus and global life. In our chat, we learn more about Sarah’s work with PLEN along with the Genocide and Human Rights Symposium and how they relate to the arc of work she has embarked on at HWS. Join the Herald and Seneca Scene as they trace one of the most altering times in America and its effect on the campus of Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Beginning in 1968 and continuing until 1972, Tommy Tongyai went to campuses all across upstate New York, riling up students and inciting violence. It wasn’t until he arrived on the HWS campus that the violence really started. Tongyai, better known as Tommy the Traveler, came during a time of Vietnam War protests and the counter-culture movement. It was a critical culture moment, one that would forever change Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

Episode 1: Setting the Scene details the contextual time for the country and Hobart and William Smith Colleges in the late 1960s before Tommy arrived. It was a time of great upheaval and change for the Colleges with new trends emerging as students were getting drafted into Vietnam. The beginning of the 1970s is when everything changed: the Kent State Shooting was on May 4, 1970, and with it came a fear of radicalism, police, and violence on college campuses that had never been seen before.

This week on the Seneca Scene we have an in-depth conversation with David Kendrick an Associate Professor of Geoscience. Professor Kendrick passionately talks about how he fell in love with geoscience and their journey to become a part of the HWS Community. We also delve into his research with geology of the fingerlakes and how that impacts our world today. Professor Kendrick discusses his role in John Cariani’s Love/Sick which was performed last semester and the plans for the new science buildings.

With over twenty interviews from people on-campus, video interviews from a documentary created in the aftermath, and archival research, the Herald and Seneca Scene team have created a brand-new podcast miniseries that traces Tommy’s arrival on campus and effect on campus. The full series will begin on Wednesday, May 29th.
